Another Hip Hop Station In Myrtle Beach Work?

Would another Hip Hop station formated Rhythmic/CHR work in Myrtle Beach? It would compete against 98.5 KISS-FM. As KISS-FM is soft in day hours and then starts playing hip hop in afternoon and night (Coast 97.3 sounds much better) Now the only company I could see doing this is Next Media which I am not sure if they even own any hip hop formated stations. And the one station that I could see them doing this to is 96.1 as that station is tanking. I could see hip hop on the format working very well. Also 96.1 covers the same area has a little better signal over 98.5 which would make this work so well. Name the station Hot 96 or 96 Jamz or even WiLD 96.1 Slogans can be "Where Hip Hop Lives" "Myrtle Beach's #1 for Hip Hop and R&B" This would format on 96.1 would work so well, this is a win for Next Media.

IMO, Cumulus was better off having POWER as Urban and KISS as Urban AC. I beleive another Urban station would work but most likely it'll have to be billed as Rhythmic like POWER was. Honestly I don't see it happening but bringing Tom Joyner back to the Grand Strand would be a plus.

I agree Cumulus should have left Power and KISS alone. Maybe they will see they did wrong by putting Power and KISS together. They did wrong with i 100 its a cheap done Pop station on 100.3 and 93.7 in Georgetown. In Georgetown they can pick up 95sx along with local Mix 97.7.

As for a new hip hop station on The Grand Strand I don't think Tom Joyner would fit for a morning show thats more for a Urban AC. Maybe Steve Harvey or just do a local morning show. The only thing is who would be willing to do this. I only see Next Media doing it.

I agree Power 100.3 should have just been left alone.

Movin 94.5 should go urban AC (with Joyner). They seem to play a lot of the same songs (none new) but they're all over the place with 60s Motown and beach music along with the dsco, funk and 80s.

Next Media could take 96.1 Urban AC as in the radio profile they program a Urban AC in NC and in MI. Both stations air "The Steve Harvey Morning Show". Markets with Steve Harvey as the morning show do fairly better. For example V 101.9 Charlotte, NC and Star 99.7 Charleston, SC.

If this happened we would see 98.5 KISS FM add more Urban AC to the playlist and less hip hop and rap. Or they could just go full blown Urban without the urban ac.

WKZQ is such a legendary station. It would be a shame if that happened.

You are correct but they are losing to Rock 107.1 and Next Media doesn't want to lose money. They know its a business. This is be a good thing for Next Media plus it has better coverage in the same area 98.5 does. It would be a win I think.

If they simply moved the call letters to 107.1 maybe it would seem like WKZQ was still there.

They could do that or keep the calls in the Next Media family and place them on 104.1 but not changing the name of Wave 104.1
I thought of that too but back in the 80s Wave was legendary too.

I just read this from Wikipedia for WYAV, they were AC then CHR and now to its current format Classic Rock. Why did they drop the AC format as it was once number? Maybe if it stayed AC we would be seeing Star 104.1 instead of Star 92.1, not sure what the station was called in the 80s as a AC tho.

I might have contributed that information to Wikipedia. I do know that according to Broadcasting Yearbook, they were top 40, but I heard the station in its early days--1984 through 1986--and the music sure sounded AC to me. And it was Wave 104.1 even then. In 1986 they ran an ad in the Sun News saying they were no. 1 according to Arbitron. Before they increased their signal, they were WLAT-FM ... and that terrible-looking sign is STILL THERE!

By the time I returned to Myrtle Beach in 1988, they were defintely doing an adult version of top 40.
