i just stumbled across this board trying to find info on joel riley. i'm really unhappy that he's not on the air now. that guy loves central ohio with all his heart and did everything he could to help the community and numerous organizations (like A Christmas To Cure Cancer and Creative Living). he had his finger on the pulse of Columbus and kept everyone in the loop. WTVN used to be the only radio station i'd listen to (ipod took care of any time i didn't want to listen), but i think i'm done now. i wonder if they'll allow any conversation about it. i remember people would try to bring up stearling on the john corby show and he would immediately cut them off and call them a jerk (or was that steve boom boom cannon?).

i dont know. i might still listen to corby when i can and ben johnson on sunday nights and call/e-mail to support them. radio johnson is a great program with half of the spirit of the joel riley show.

i do wonder about the future of the big bass brothers though. if he's still working for clear channel i'd guess the BBB is still a go. but that is probably the single-most popular radio segment in central ohio so if that goes under i know they'll get some nasty calls.

Since Joel is still in the building, and is considered the primary fill-in for the two remaining local hosts, we're told that segment will continue as is.

I have no idea what that segment is. :D

It's a restaurant review.

Only not the white table cloth place review. Affordable greasy spoon outlets are reviewed. Buffets. Mom/Pop type places. The quality of the food as well as the size of the portion is important. Restroom sanitation is part of the review. Cost of the meal is critical too.

Besides Riley, Corby and producer Bradley are involved. I think at one time there may have been others. The review is done in a regular guy type presentation. Really quite a hoot.

I don't listen to Corby (or WTVN) all that often anymore, but I do try to catch the Big Bass Brothers segment.

good to hear. it's def. worth listening to. you can download the podcasts for that segment only if you want to check it out. i would never imagine myself anticipating friday so i can listen to a restaurant review, but it's incredibly informative and entertaining. they've saved me from wasting my time going somewhere and reminded me that i need to go back to a local classic i hadn't been to in a while. and it's basically like a food service economic stimulus plan. on saturday, go eat at where they were on friday, and you'll probably be hearing everyone at the place talking about the show.

Instead of worrying about WVKO being trouble...I think the new thread should be for CC employees being in trouble and the downfall for radio(at least for CC stations) itself. Tuesday marks the day for mandatory meetings. And tuesday also marks the day for a new pay period..notorious for staff cuts(besides fridays). I hear that some huge changes are in store, and not for the better.

First off Tuesday is not a pay day...it was on the 15th (only get paid on the 15th and end of the month), so tomorrow is not a payday. As for a mandatory meeting...haven't heard that one yet from my sources. Tomorrow is probably the day with mainly a sales cut, and a little programming.

For what its worth...

The New York Post cites "three sources with knowledge of the plan" as it predicts that clear channel will begin a massive restructuring Tuesday to cut $400 million in costs.

if they cut corby and bc then there is no reason to even turn on the former full service giant. at that point they'd be nothing but syndicated programs i could get on my computer if i so desired. and they could re-brand themselves as the self service midget.

Looks like Ben Johnson got whacked.

I'm sorry to hear about that. I worked with Ben at another station prior to his arrival at 610 as Riley's producer. He's a good dude who deserves a better fate, as do all the employees affected by this latest hatchet job.
