Another one gone!

Several radio vets passed away this week, including Jack Armstrong. Here is another
from the Upstate. Sad news.

Ex-Clemson Announcer Frith/Shannon Dies At 63
Condolences to family and friends of SOUTH CAROLINA radio personality and former CLEMSON UNIVERSITY football and basketball color commentator JAMES 'ROCKY' FRITH, also known as SCOTT SHANNON, who died WEDNESDAY at a nursing home in ANDERSON, SC of complications from a stroke he suffered in 1994, according to the ANDERSON INDEPENDENT-MAIL. FRITH was 63.
He served as color commentator for CLEMSON games in 1972-78 and again in the 1980's, and worked at WANS-A and WAIM-A/ANDERSON and the old WFBC-A/GREENVILLE.

I had the opportunity to work with Scott back at WANS for about three years in the late 80s. He was the most kind and gentle soul on the planet. I was really sad to hear about his stoke several years ago. He was one of those guys that would work any hours, was a lover of oldies music and his beloved Clemson Tigers. He got the shaft by several different owners and managers, but always kept a great attitude because he just loved being in radio! Rest in peace.

You're right on the money Brent. As is the case many times in our biz, Scott and I kind of went to different high schools together, so to speak, when I was working in the Upstate in the 80s. Nice guy...I often cut him some slack in spite of his love of the Tigers. As a Carolina fan myself, he actually made Clemson palatable to me...truly nice guys in this industry are few and far between. I think you're one. I'd like to think I'm one. I know Scott was one.

By the way, hope you and everyone at B are well.

...summers

I listened to him (along with James Irwin) doing mornings at WANS as I was getting ready for school in the mid/late 80's. Always thought he sounded so smooth and "real".

A few years later when I was his phone screener at WFBC-AM during his sports show, I found out what a great guy he really was. Never had a bad word to say about anybody

sad news......really sad

I remember Scott mostly for following Monty Dupuy on 1330 in Greenville for a Mid-Day shift.....just before Jim Burnside. Although Monty was "simulcast" on 93.7, 1330 was still one of the more popular stations at the time.

Although there are some legendary stories......and someone will fess up to the beer cans in Monty's yard.....Scott was truly one of the "good guys."

You don't have to be nice only when you have visitors at the station, you should be nice all the time. I was a visitor once and I am still in the business. Scott was one of the first people I met back in the WFBC days.

I hope you don't mind the message, but I wanted to seek out and thank some of the people who had such nice things to say regarding my dad Rocky "Scott Shannon" Frith. This seems like an appropriate place to do so

Having been around radio for most of my life, I know that the business is a true labor of love. Few people in the profession will ever get adequately compensated with their paycheck. The real payoff for dad was that he was always surrounded by very nice people, such as yourselves.

On behalf of my brother Scot, his wife Angie, myself, my fiancée Kerry, our Aunt Brenda, Uncle David, and the rest of our family and friends, I would like to offer our most sincere gratitude for your kind words. We greatly appreciate the warmth and kindness you have shown in this difficult time.

Take care!
Jason Frith
