Another Sign of Talk Radio Decline? - Limbaugh can't Afford New York City

gr8oldies said:
when you comment about Rush's weight, are you looking at 25 year old pictures?

His red-faced ones from this year's CPAC, where he was wearing black. And a lot of it. :D

Rush is fat and rich.

Florida has no income tax AND a homestead exemption. Declaring his mansion in West Palm as his home will keep his property taxes from skyrocketing.

NO INCOME TAX + homestead exemption + Rush money = he's fine.

And people are still leaving Florida in droves.

Relevance?

Actually what Silkie is referring to is the fact the more people are now moving out of Florida than moving in. Most of the counties in the southern end of the state are loosing population and are expected to continue to loose people for the next few years.

The economy has hit Florida particularly hard. There are many areas with 10-11 % unemployment currently. Many people are moving out of state looking for work.

Another thing effecting Florida is the recent hurricanes. That has scared some away and has definitely caused the state to loose some of it's allure to retirees.

The cost of living in many areas of Florida can also be very expensive despite no state income taxes. Property taxes can be very high, home owners insurance has gotten our of sight in price and the cost of homes in some areas is still high despite the down market.

This conversation is ranging far and wide, and we are learning a lot of angles.

Going back to radio.! <what a concept!> The original post tried to lay the groundwork that if Rush is trying to escape the high cost of living in NYC, that must mean talk radio is declining. I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't see any compelling logic expressed here to support or prove that.

Compared to some places for people of "average" finances, Florida can have some gotcha's for your pocket book. It used to be an economical place for retirees but it is no longer a "poster child state" for low cost living.

Whether Rush is doing better or worse than what he has in the past, I don't think the cost of living is going to be prohibitive there for him.

I have a son living down there and for the first several years finding work that paid adequately was hard. After the hurricane season something like four years ago, a bunch of working folks (much younger than retirement age) threw in the towel and went back north to escape hurricanes. My son was able to fill one of those vacancies and inherit what has been his best job since going to Florida.

The other flow if people leaving Florida is one of our bits of humor here in North Georgia. When I moved here I tried to behave and watch my mouth...< that's a real challenge for me! ;D > because I knew people in the South were quick to recognize a "damn yankee" and invite him to return to him homeland. When I arrived here I learned about a group that the folks up in the mountains of Georgia were even less hospitable about than ordinary damn yankees... and that would be the "half-back"s. These are the yankees who retire up north and go thundering down to Florida only to find it less than the Shangri-La they expected. Too hot. Too many roaches and other bugs. Too many weird people. Too little social action. No change of seasons. Whatever. So they go "half back". Not to Ohio, or Indiana or Michigan, but half-back.... to Georgia. I suspect they are in the Carolinas and Tennessee also.

So, people leaving Florida doesn't prove much in the way of any one trend. And proves ZILCH about radio.

Can I go back to sleep now?

Same thing with Republicans and taxes--many bitch about them even if they are in a situation in which they don't have to pay them.

Are you saying that Rush somehow doesn't have to pay New York's taxes? Please cite some facts.

Slow down. Take a deep breath. Go back and read it again.

At that point he was not talking about Rush. He was talking about Republicans in general: a race of people who have a congenital defect that makes them alergic to all forms and amounts of taxation, even when they are not paying them. Don't know how they expect to build roads, build and operate schools, pay for armies or maintain a prison system. But asking a Republican to pay a tax, any tax, is like asking a Muslim join you for a Tail-Gate party at the stadium featuring pulled PORK Bar-B-Q. :-\

"Are you saying that Rush somehow doesn't have to pay New York's taxes?"

Unncessary use of bandwidth here. If you would take the time to carefully read my post, you would know, without asking, that I said no such thing.

Please let's not be so batty as to think Rush cares for a moment about taxes in New York--especially when, as one poster pointed out, he's ensconced most of the time in very expensive Palm Beach.

But clearly you're suggesting that if he's saying NY taxes are behind this, that he's being disingenuous at best.

This is what is wrong with political talk radio. BOTH sides. Being of a particular political persuasion does not make one part of "a race of people who have a congenital defect."

I'm a moderate republican who grew up as a democrat, I lived in Florida for 13 years, I got very frustrated with the anti-tax mentality of the state (which is NOT party-specific, mind you) and I wanted my son to get a good education, so I packed the family up and came back up north, where I now pay state and local income taxes, but have a son who can read.

In this economy, all wealthy people, regardless of party affiliation, are reviewing their assets and expenses. even if it's not about taxes, if he never uses the place why bother to have it? The show plays just the same from Palm Beach as it does from Manhattan.

I'd respond, but I am from Florida and I can't read.

We can sit here and hash out why people choose to live in whatever state they want to. The bottom line is basically this. Rush spends most of his time in Florida now a days it appears so he wants to change his legal address which hi is certainty entitled to do.

Now that aside I think that he is using this decision to pull another one of his stunts and get some promotion out of it. With this action he can sit there and carry on about all the high taxes that those nasty Democrats in NY are charging him. Just Rush being Rush.

"Just Rush being Rush."

Exactly, swfl. Nothing further need be said, except to note my astonishment that people who pass for intelligent creatures actually take this gasbag seriously--more seriously than he takes himself.

They're still waiting for all those multimillionaires who got tax cuts to create jobs for them or to give them a merit increase. Of course, now it will be that they have to create their own jobs, but can't because of taxes. You understand. 8)

Rush is radio's top paid performer. As I recall, his last contract was worth over 30 million dollars? And yet he says HE CAN'T AFFORD NEW YORK? Talk about largesse. Maybe he should shut the hell up. I'd take 1 percent of the contract and be happy. I have no sympathy for the slob.

Nevada is third when it comes to unemployment, next to CA and RI and they have no income tax, so the taxes v. employment and relocation relationships are not that established.

As I said, a female caller from Discovery Bay CA said that she and many people in her neighborhood were without jobs and upside down in their houses. Rush told her to move. If he doesn't like the country, taxes and government, etc. he has the same option...he would be happier. (Did I hear him say something about taking diabeties pills?)

I doubt you have every done anything to earn 300,000 dollars.

Envy will kill ya.

A lot of you are too jealous of millionaires. If you can make it, good for you. That is what America is all about, the land of opportunity. Paying 90% tax on what you have earned is not. Good for Rush for blasting New York taxes. We're doing the same in talkradio here in California.
