Another WAAZ post

Don't you just love hearing a live person doing the TOH ID? They screwed up this afternoon and ID'd as WAAZ AM and WJSB AM.

Anyway, back to the reason for this post. I just found out that WAAZ is streaming live on "The World Wide Internet" at thegoodcountry.com.

Just sayin'

After I click on Listren Live u have to download it? Maybe if I tired it on Tune In Radio App on my andorid but they said there streaming is not 24/7 just 5am-12mid.

True, why stream when the station is off the air?

"We currently stream from 5am til midnight Monday thru Saturdays."

LOL 128/44 stereo?? Your kidding me! Unless there planning on going full stereo soon.

-Rob

So WAAZ is playing double the normal rate. Isn't that good?

Also, Jimmy is playing some good old classic country, Zydeco, bluegrass, etc... Some of his music sources probably aren't in stereo, heck some may be coming off of 78 RPM records! So if the studio has some 78's, some cassette decks, a few real to real machines and good old cart machines, dang those carts make radio so much easier....He's doing a good job. Do you think he still might be trying to run an 8-track player through the board?

Also remember WAAZ is simulcasting an AM radio station. His equipment is for mixing music is probably designed for AM and then patched over to the FM.

I know I've got tinnitus (I rocked my ears off between ages 15-25), but I have no issues with sound quality on WAAZ. He makes harsh segways, but I've used equipment that made segs like that before. It's just old equipment. If he was pushing that music through the chain at Cat Country it wouldn't sound natural. I'm happy leaving WAAZ alone as long as the owners don't start programming a different format. A sudden seg from CBS news to a live reading of the local obituaries just sounds RIGHT on WAAZ.

You're right..just leave it alone!..Jimmy isn't programming his station maybe
as much as he used to, he's leaving it up to Cal Zethmayer, his engineer,
sales manager, and all around utility "can do everything" guy (who knows, he
might be the GM, Ops Manager or Program Director all in one). They do play
some good classic country, i.e., Jim Reeves, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash which
garners those upper demos (45+-65+)who don't care to hear Tim McGraw,
Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney, etc, the new core country
artists who get rotated on country formats much like the top 40 stations did
playing a tight playlist of 25 -30 tunes only rotating every 2-3 hours!!It' s the
same old problem..the consultants at the corporate stations have that same
mindset to "play a song into the ground" causing most listeners to "tune out"
as their research says their audience TSL is very short, 20-30 minute intervals.
Anyway, I like the bluegrass and you can play Merle or George and Tammy
Johnny and Waylon anytime..just backtime those near top of hour songs so
you don't clip the music off to go to CBS news!

One thing I'd bet is that whatever equipment Mr. Whittaker is using looks like it just came out of the box. The last time I was there (probably the late 90s) stepping in the studio was like walking into a museum. I'm glad there are few places like WAAZ left. To me they're what radio should be all about.

Speaking of backtiming..

Being legally blind (told in detail in my story on a different post) in 1996 I was hired for an on-air position at a station I'd worked at before back in the 80s. Now, I couldn't read the studio clock from the on-air location. So I would time my watch (analog, with a second hand) to the network tones (station ran USA News, now IRN/USA.)

The boss didn't mention any of this to the young lady on duty. So she told me all about watching the clock, and "when the second hand gets to :45 on the clock you have 15 seconds to get the legal ID in."

After she showed me all the stuff related to the board, she suddently stopped.

"Are you sure you can handle this?" she asked.

"Pretty sure."

"I'd swear that I thought you were looking at your watch a moment ago."

"I did..just making sure it's synchronized. I can't read the clock way over there."

She had a horrified look on her face. "Does...does Mr. "X" know about that?" She paused a moment. "He..he's got you scheduled for an air shift TOMORROW!"

"Oh, he knows. I worked for him for a number of years before. It will be fine." I assured her.

I ended up working there eight years that time..used my watch to backtime and hit the news the entire time.

Mr. Whittaker and I would get along just fine. I admire him for keeping WAAZ "real."
