May take a little more than a mil to clean up all the FCC violations and other business issues the current owners of that station created. Rumor has it they lost their tower site or are very near to loosing it for nonpayment, just like their studio space. Think that's why they went dark. That station will most likely never come back now unless someone does a lot of work that they may never get back in funding.

And even if all those problems went away, there's still the fact that WZUM is on AM. Buying a brand new AM radio station and all its equipment in 2010 is like buying a vinyl record pressing factory in 1990.

It's worth noting that a few companies still make high-quality vinyl records for LP collectors. There's no question
that AM radio, like vinyl, is a medium in decline, but it can still serve a purpose, if it targets the "niche" audiences
FM has abandoned.

That's why I wrote "Buying a brand new AM radio station". You're absolutely correct that there are firms squeezing some life and profit out of old vinyl record presses. And, there are broadcasters who have existing AM transmitter equipment that's still working, and they're making use of the old gear as long as it still works. I'm actually a big fan of many kinds of out-dated "retro" technology. I enjoy cooking on an old, wood burning stove every now and then, but I would buy a brand new one for everyday use.

Even though it's possible to make a profit from an old AM radio transmitter, investing in brand new AM radio transmitter and studio in 2010 doesn't seem like a very smart thing to do. Unless, of course, you're Charles Foster Kane, and looking for a fun hobby and money is no object.

As someone who has had a life-long dream to someday own a radio station, I'd sadly have to agree
with you. Prices have fallen and some sellers are so desperate there has probably never been a
better time to make it happen, which I could probably do if I really wanted to stretch resources.
But no matter how you analyze it, it just seems to keep working out as a really bad investment.
