Any Major Format Holes Left?

It may have been mentioned earlier in this thread: Christian Country. Cumulus just started that format on a translator here in Atlanta.

Seems rather like an exclusive and not an inclusive format. I don't get it. If you're Christian but don't like country, or you like country and you are not religious or not a Christian the format is saying "this is not for you".

Narrowcasting gone wild!

Joe

It's also unlikely to be a format hole anyone would want to fill in the urban Northeast.

WKTU's current format may be mostly current rhythmic music, but if they felt their was a big demand for older dance music, they could modify their programming and add it.
The station has tweaked their music mix numerous times, so I doubt they would have a problem with doing so again.

I see your side and Morpheux. :)

It's a weird tossup because while 'KTU is going mainly for the 25-54 women, you do have a lot of younger women that tune in and on both sides, they like current rhythmic music....keyword: SAFE. And for what they are doing, the billing is good so they're not going to change it anytime soon.

I think it's a question of demand really. I know there are some classic dance stations on the Internet and sure, it can draw folks such as myself into it. But at the same time, there still is a demand for a current based dance that is edgier. I say it like that because honestly I wouldn't want for a dance station in New York City to go "full blown" EDM. You couldn't do that here anyway and be successful at it. But still there are demands at both ends.

To be honest, I wouldn't want for another station to do what 'KTU did in 1996-2006 whereas while they did play current dance, it wasn't really enough and they seemed stuck on the disco classics. Which is another reason why an older dance station may not work this time around...people were burnt out of hearing "I Will Survive" for the 253,634.347th time...if not just on 'KTU, definitely when Mix 102.7 was on air. Even when Jammin 105.1 was on the air.

A classic dance station can work if they stick to music from 80's and 90's.So no Disco. It is a format hole and people would tune in. Whether or not it fits into the strategic plans of CC,CBS or Cumulus is the real question. I'm surprised no one has mentioned that 103.9 being so relatively close on the dial to KTU (103.5) could cause great confusion to listeners if they did a dance type format (New or Classic).

A current based rock station, like every other market in the country. NYC now has country, but no rock, very, very strange.

NY has classic rock but not alt. rock but yes, country before alt. rock is a bit odd I agree.
Infact country before alot of more NY centric formats like dance is odd in my opinion.

We need alternative rock

Than get it on the Internet or Sirius XM or college radio. If there was a modern rock station in NY, you'd complain about it anyway.

Hi Mark- see my signature line. Baby boomers weeped into their tissues when CBS FM was blown up for Jack. Rock fans have been toyed with in New York going back to the 1990s. I think if another company besides CBS (who cannot program a decent rock station to save their lives) had owned WNEW in the 1990s, it would still be on the air, similar to WMMR.

New Rock 101.9 had ratings on par with 92.3 Now, after 2 MONTHS.

Smooth jazz still has a decent following and hasn't been in New York since WQCD left in 2008.
Clear Channel is bringing back smooth jazz to Philadelphia, on an AM station! RadioInsight states they are flipping WDAS from urban oldies to SJ. It will be simulcast on an HD2.
It is interesting how some formats that were widely considered no longer viable do make a comeback, such as Country in New York.

Smooth jazz on AM has the look of a placeholder format if I ever saw one. It's a dog station on a dog frequency on a band nobody outside the 75-to-dead demo even listens to anymore. CC is probably just waiting to assemble the right combination of C- and D-list right-wingers to fill out the schedule and let the station putter away its existence from its broom closet and survive on Kars 4 Kids spots.

Perhaps Clear Channel intends to rebroadcast the new WJJZ AM or the HD2 from a translator in the Philly or South Jersey area. They can then market it as a regular FM station.
