Any News On Whether WSBK-38 Will Continue To Televise The Red Sox??

The past three years, WSBK-38 televised 28 to 30 regular-season Red Sox games a year (and a handful of pre-season games as well).

If my memory serves me correct, the deal was for three years and has expired.

I have heard nothing about whether there will be any local Red Sox telecasts on over-the-air TV in Boston in 2006, and if so, where would they be seen and how many games would be broadcast.

Given that 80% of NESN is owned by the Red Sox, I would not be surprised if the team decides to no longer sell rights for any games to an over-the-air TV station, but instead, have all games (except those on national television) on NESN. Were that to happen, NESN would broadcast about 150 regular-season Red Sox games a year. In fact, games on WSBK have for the past three years been seen on NESN outside of the Boston area.

After all, when their long-term deal with WSBK expired after the 2001/2002 season, the Bruins (who own the other 20% of NESN) decided to no longer sell over-the-air TV rights to any games, and placed the team's entire schedule (again, apart from nationally-televsied games) on NESN. The Red Sox may want to follow suit.

With NESN 80% Sox-owned, and the ratings that games on NESN receive (usually dominating the time period), the team would probably make more money to move the 28-30 games a year now on WSBK over to NESN than they would if they were to sell rights for these games to WSBK or any other over-the-air TV station.

nesn only. they are not selling any games to non-cable tv stations this
year.

If most of the games on WSBK were on Friday, I don't think it's a good idea for them to stay on WSBK since UPN moved Wrestling to Fridays in September. I'm sure there are some Wrestling Fans who aren't Redsox Fans. And I'm sure there's some Redsox Fans who are also Wrestling Fans. Granted they could show wrestling after the game, but not everyone is gonna stay up til 12AM or later (Since most games go past 10PM) to watch the Wrestling.

And my opinion is the same for the Yankees on UPN 9 in NYC and Hartford (New Haven). Most of the Yankees Games that were on the UPN 9's were on Fridays. After the Wrestling moved to Fridays in September UPN 9 in Hartford (WCTX/59) would either show the Wrestling Saturdays at 8PM or Sundays at 5PM.

IMHO Wrestling is garbage!
I say bring on Friday night baseball. It was the main reason WSBK-DT got Comcast coverage.

Now the only thing there is "Everybody hates Chris" (A good show, though)

Wresting fans? That's like saying that Sam Malone was a great Red Sox player.
You mean fans of watching fake Wresting.
Not wrestling fans. Real wrestling and WWE are distinctly different.

Not to mention that would be a great way for the Sox to serve the community that they beat their chests about at every turn. How about in addition to selling rings and sod for charity, keep one game a week on free televison? Let the poorer members of our community watch Sox games on Ford's and Dunkin' Donuts' dimes.

Doesn't count as a local broadcast, but I would think there will be a
few over-the-air Sox games via FOX 25/Fox MLB coverage. Fox has MLB rights till
the end of the '06 season:

from a May 05 USA today article:
>.Fox, paying MLB about $417 million a year in a deal ending after the 2006 season, had the highest-rated World Series in a decade last season despite the Boston Red Sox winning in a four-game sweep..<

I'm a wrestling fan and I agree with you for the most part. Yes, WCTX-TV (UPN) channel 59 of New Haven carried the 26-Time World Champion Yankee games from WWOR-TV, mostly on Friday nights. However, I'm pretty certain that WCTX-TV would probably average more viewers when a game is on, seeing how New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and other markets seem to do the same thing.

As for WCTX-TV (UPN) channel 59, they usually would run their 10 PM news produced by sister WTNH-TV (ABC) channel 8 of New Haven. Most of the time, "WWE Smackdown!" would air on Saturdays at 8 PM.

Not all pro wrestling is garbage. You're right most of the time with WWE. They and TNA have a few good workers each, but I rarely watch either one these days.

I like "Veronica Mars" on UPN. The show has struggled with the ratings in its two-year existance, but I like it (and Kristen Bell :p).

Getting back to baseball, I believe the New York Mets will still be carried by WPIX-TV (WB) channel 11 next season, depending on when and if the Mets get their own network up and running.

The Mets' new network (Sportsnet-New York) will be "up and running" in time for 2006, but WPIX-11 will still carry some Mets' telecasts. However, the station is going to carry only 25 regular-season Mets' games in 2006; WPIX broadcast about double that number of games in 2005.

I don't have Cable TV. I refuse to pay their increasingly high prices. I have a Roof Antenna on my Building that pulls in 20 Free stations. Most of my favorite shows are on the Networks anyway. So I don't feel like I'm missing much. I Love to watch Baseball and it will be sad if WSBK no longer carries Red Sox games. However I have a very fast DSL connection. I think major league Baseball Games can now be accessed online for a small fee. I do not know how much that fee is and weather it will justify me paying for. But I guess there is always Free radio which will still carry the Games. Not quite as exciting as watching on Television, but still better than nothing. I'll figure out something when the time comes.

Well you might have trouble watching the Red Sox on MLB.com as their are black out rules. So if you live in Red Sox viewing area you will not be able to watch the games via MLB.com. So the only way you will be able to get the game is over WEEI Sports Radio 850. But who knows WSBK might still be able to show the Red Sox in Boston only.
