The past three years, WSBK-38 televised 28 to 30 regular-season Red Sox games a year (and a handful of pre-season games as well).
If my memory serves me correct, the deal was for three years and has expired.
I have heard nothing about whether there will be any local Red Sox telecasts on over-the-air TV in Boston in 2006, and if so, where would they be seen and how many games would be broadcast.
Given that 80% of NESN is owned by the Red Sox, I would not be surprised if the team decides to no longer sell rights for any games to an over-the-air TV station, but instead, have all games (except those on national television) on NESN. Were that to happen, NESN would broadcast about 150 regular-season Red Sox games a year. In fact, games on WSBK have for the past three years been seen on NESN outside of the Boston area.
After all, when their long-term deal with WSBK expired after the 2001/2002 season, the Bruins (who own the other 20% of NESN) decided to no longer sell over-the-air TV rights to any games, and placed the team's entire schedule (again, apart from nationally-televsied games) on NESN. The Red Sox may want to follow suit.
With NESN 80% Sox-owned, and the ratings that games on NESN receive (usually dominating the time period), the team would probably make more money to move the 28-30 games a year now on WSBK over to NESN than they would if they were to sell rights for these games to WSBK or any other over-the-air TV station.
