Any switching/changes predicted?

The August #s are in and the managements around have had time to test the waters, any predicted format changes for the Anchorage market? The "Movin" format that is spreading about the lower 48 (started in Seattle- which Anchorage tends to copy alot) might be one some of the stations that didnt score so well might look at. What format is Anchorage missing? I for one would like to see an Urban AC outlet- with a sizeable blk/hispanic population, the time might be right ,and it appeals to the White folks too. :)

Urban AC is not Urban Contemporary (KFAT). Urban AC is R&B ( non hip hop- non rap ) geared to adult audiences( 35+)- artists like John Legend, Luther Vandross, Toni Braxton, older R&B acts like Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire, and so forth. Huge difference in urban ac and KFAT. Its like saying KGOT is the same as KYMG. There is some crossover artists, but plays alot different ones and to a older age group.

I could see KFAT switching formats, but it's unlikely as NNB has other underperforming stations in the building. The Buzz got its ass handed to it by Mix and KRPM by the Fox in this last book, so there's two stations that I'd watch to see if they flip formats anytime soon. Hard to say what a format hole is in this market, I agree with the Urban AC idea, however Morris and Clear won't do it, and I find it hard to believe that NNB would put anything on the air that might remotely compete with KFAT. Who knows, if 94.7 the End keeps having 30 second stop sets, maybe that'd be the station to go 'Movin', doubt it though.

Bob FM is doing really well, so its unlikely NNB would do this, but I think there's a remote chance that someone would throw on a AAA station. Not saying Bob is AAA, but it is a station that focuses on having a large library like a AAA station would. I'm surprised Anchorage doesn't have one, and that format along with classical and smooth jazz is one of those 'money' stations that doesn't require a huge audience to turn a profit. 103.7 the Mountain in Seattle is a huge biller, I'm very surprised that kind of station hasn't made its way up to Anchorage yet. Who knows, it could happen!

What do you all think of the stations on the air right now? I think Anchorage radio is in a pretty sad state personally. KFAT sounds terrible right now, same with Buzz, and the Clear Channel stations are OK, but nothing spectacular. I think it's an interesting move for the Fox to be airing Seahawks games when they have a sports station in the building that could use that kind of draw! The Morris stations are doing good, but again, not rockin the boat by any means.

Any thoughts?

Well, KRPM was among the ones I predicted would switch...and...say hello to the new KXLW! Actually sounds real good, who would've thought another rock station would've come on the air??

'X-Rock' Comes To Anchorage
Nov. 02, 2006

New Northwest has blown up its '80s format on KRPM in Anchorage, Alaska, in favor of an “Everything That Rocks” format now known as KXLW (X-Rock 96 Dot 3).

DeMers Programming’s Peter Smith is advising market GM Tom Oakes, who will handle PD duties until the position is filled.

If you’re interested in the gig, send your materials to [email protected] or [email protected].

Oakes told R&R the station will jockless until January when it will launch a new morning show. At that time, midday’s will feature market veteran Schatzie Schaefers and Chris “The Man” Meadows will handled weekends and swing shifts.

Everything that rocks is a "new" programming format that has hit many parts of the USA. KDKB in Phoenix recently made the "switch" to this programming too. Other stations & markets to have this format WAAF Boston, WKBU New Orleans, and many others. Now who will get on the "movin" format?

Yeah, we'll have to see about the Movin' thing. I was listening to 102.1 the Buzz today and heard Justin Timberlake's Sexy back into Rascal Flatt's 'What Hurts the Most', into Sublime - Santeria. What is this? A 'Bob FM' for young people? I remember a time about a year ago when this station didn't completely suck. It's sad. X-Rock sounds good for the moment, but I have a feeling that when the local talent steps in, they'll "NNB" the station up. :D The thing I've noticed most about X-Rock is that KWHL is playing some stuff I haven't heard them play in a long while. I'm stoked, it'll be fun to see a rock war unfold in this town.
