The formats we need here in the metroplex:

Active Rock (what the Eagle used to be)
AAA
Classic Country/Americana (one with a good signal, not the Range)

Also, the Bone is going to end up like Wild was, the reason why I'm saying this is because Wild got dumped because of the programming of the music and the Bone is going to be same way. I also think if the Bone don't change to Active Rock, the Edge can do it. It will make their station a whole lot better if they play older stuff like AC/DC, Sabbath, Ozzy etc.
Edited by charles123 on 09/09/05 01:40 PM.

I don't agree on the EDGE comment. I think it would be better for ZPS to tweak their playlist a little to include the above mentioned bands...if the EDGE did so, they would have to broad a playlist for their demo. Plus you would run into the same problem CC had when the EAGLE was around, you would be splitting your male audience between KDGE and KZPS. The EDGE could use a little tweaking in my opinion but not much...it's a pretty good variety of new rock with older 90's rock. to quote DAVRADIO..."It's just a thought".
______________

Active Rock is down quite a bit nationally, so don't look for any of the big companies to go in that direction, especially given the last few shares that KEGL posted with the format. I'm by no means saying the format is not needed and I will be the first one to say Clear Channel ruined both Q102 and The Eagle, but I think it will be awhile before it is tried again.

The station that will be interesting to watch is KLLI, after Stern leaves. I've said that before, but if the numbers dip dramatically, you could see a flip to a Rock/Alternative format (i.e.-KROQ/Los Angeles). I haven't seen a breakdown in their numbers, but I have a feeling they will take a hit after Stern leaves in December (if Infinity/WW1 doesn't boot him soonger).

The Metroplex also needs a good Urban AC, with a strong signal. After listening to both KRNB & KSOC last weekend, I was ready to pull my hair out. The music was not only terrible to match their signal, but the overall presentation sounded medium-market at best. Dallas/Fort Worth deserves a UAC like WVAZ V103/Chicago. They stream on-line http://www.wvaz.com. Check them out sometime. For a Clear Channel station, they are GREAT. Other good examples... KJLH/Los Angeles, V108/Las Vegas, WHUR/Washington DC, and WDAS-FM/Philadelphia. The two terrible UAC's in DFW, should listen to these stations, because that is what Urban AC should sound like.
______________

I happen to agree with the idea of having a station that plays Alternative Rock-- and at least bring it to the local end with Local Bands getting a shot on the air (oh wait a minute-- they used to do that in the OLD days) what a concept. Classic Country-- with a good signal... I like the idea but I thought originally that is what the TWISTER was SUPPOSE to be-- oops did I say that out loud? My bad!

Just wondering here.. but could there be a station out there that is willing to take that risk, and bring that format back, and turn it profitablly for themselves. Again if you make it where you do a couple of things promotionally. Lets first look at the demographic of that style of music, and then bring it to them. Everyone says how Deep Ellum is not the same as it once was.. that clubs come and go faster than radio station formats change. So if this station that did pick up the Alternative Rock format, were to make its rounds on Friday and Saturday Nights with LIVE CONCERTS from venues in Deep Ellum, don't you think that the concert series would work.. it would bring back the life of Deep Ellum, it would give local bands an opportunity to be hears and be judged by their fans (or new fans) and in the long run the station would be profitable for what it does for the community.

And the first station that pulls this off- -my retainer fee is negotiable!

Just a thought!

I believe we need a "davradio" format. It would be a Deep Ellum Format with a "Live from Lower Greenville" on saturday nights, featuring local aritsts, rock, jazz.and a sunday morning show dedicated to "fine Cigars". There ya go Dave;)

I'd have to agree with another post about ZPS tweaking the playlist. Leave the Edge alone as is. The Bone, yes, does need some flipping. I would hope Emmis would take the station and flip it to modern rock or Cox takes it and shift to active rock.
______________

How about an eclectic easy listening station? Something for the over-35 crowd. Deep album cuts from familiar artists, a wide range of styles from blues to bluegrass. It could play some classical, folk, ethnic and 'other'. They'd have to hire a musicologist with a strong enough will to ignore the charts and stand up to the record companies. Caruso to Eno... Polyphonic spree to Benny Goodman.

Just a hallucination.

The radio in this market used to be much better. KGSR does well in Austin. I realize this isn't Austin but a similar concept tailored for DFW could do well if done properly.

Rock is not the demos any station or group wants anymore ...

You're dreaming. You will have to buy a station of your own.

The Range has a good, if not excellent signal. And when the FCC approves, the signal will extend to the south for a long way.

But the music is questionable.

The ratings never improved much after the power increase. Right now, bottom of the barrel in 12+.

Remember the Mario Mendoza line that George Brett once talked about? Any batting average under Mendoza's told you how bad you were.

Any station below WRR, a classical station no less, must be floudering in futility.

> The formats we need here in the metroplex:
>

I think it would be nice if there was a Jukebox format for listeners about 45 to 55. Such a station would bill more than Jack FM, because the demo at that age has more disposable income.
