Anybody remember when radio was fun?

Today, the only competition is usually within "pods". (God, I hate that name. Orcas swim in pods; radio shouldn't be in any.) Those of you who work within a five, six or seven station "pod" are mere 'droids going through the motions. No insult intended, but, that's what it is.

The one thing I pray for every day? That Congress will break up these monopolies, a la AT&T in the '80s, and return radio to more DIFFERENT owners...good and bad. At least, back in the day, we did have fun. >>sigh<<

Post your complaints about the disadvantages of big media radio/TV/internet. The FCC is going to reevaluate the current regulations on broadcasting January, but you must file your complaint by Dec. 21. The new Congress must approve these new regulations and they will be have the final word. If the new Congress doesn't approve these new regulations, then the FCC will have to make them even more stringent.

I had turned my back on ROCK RADIO in the early 80's. When My kids finally convinced me to get into the WWW.
That was last FEB06. First thing I did was look up old radio buddys,,I was SHOCKED to find one of my HEROES living just 65 miles from me when we WINTER in FLA. We own a SEASONAL business near PITTSBURGH

No one said it would be perfect once again, if it ever was perfect. These complaints are to stop the monopolization of radio and television by a handful of select individuals.

Anyways, the deadline has been extended to January 16.
 
hate to disagree..........but U are wrong. they are blaming lma's, duopolies and consolidation...............just like consultants and research, they are easy targets and convenient to play the blame game with because they cannot answer back

I hate to disagree with you but that is the correct target. While consolodation happened coupled with expansion the corp. types were able to cover their inability to manage and their lack of creativity with positive movement to the bottom line because they "consolodated" costs, in other words fired the most talented and most expensive, (immediate profit). But when they could expand no more they were exposed. That is why CC is going to go private again...the bottom line stopped climbing, flattened out and began declining in markets outside the top 100 where you really needed the talent and localization to make things work for the bottom line over the long haul. Wall street is very greedy, more profit right now, that is all Wall Street is and that is all that the Stock Market is designed to be.

You didn't need a good radio background, excellent creativity or any other good traits to make it big in the corp structure, you just needed to be a sly shark. However the feeding frenzy seems to have run out of a food source in the radio business, I sure feel sorry for the next business pool that the sharks move into.
 
yeah that whole icky "return on investment" thing is foreign to many

GOD forbid major radio companies generate revenue and turn a profit like most major, successful corporations in america and around the world
 
Nothing wrong with all of the above if they program quality local radio while making their money.
 
it is local. local personnel, local operators. so they're owned by a big corp? so what? u R saying "it's ok to make money so long as everything that goes in and comes out is local"?

that is like saying mcdonald's can't serve good burgers 'cuz the recipe comes from outside the local market

Radio isn't a fast food joint. It's a communications medium operating on limited spectrum on loan from the public. To suggest that something that can impact so many people's lives, both through information and the incredible language that is music, is to downplay the importance and the honor it is to be a broadcaster, not simply a company that owns some highly efficient and sterile radio stations. You can balance the art with the commerce, but greed leads to the downturn of product every time.

the balance is art and science. besides, when all is said and done, business is business. because a company (any company) wants to be profitable it's "greed"? U are just as greedy, then, trying to tell the radio undustry "to hell with making money, boys. it's the 50s, malt shops and poodle skirts and 3 or 4 radio stations in each city...........". it ain't happy days and wolfman jack anymore. and the fat days of the eighties are over, too.

REALITY...........it's not always perfect but it is what it is. U should check out the REAL world and stop living in what U consider the IDEAL WORLD. the ideal world does not exist and never has.
 
You're exaggerating my viewpoint. I'm all for making money. But it can be done while having fun, being creative, and taking chances. No, it's not the 50s anymore so why are we doing radio like it's still the 90s? Explain that one? We're facing increased competition and it's time we started pushing forward in this industry again, because if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.

but U are basically saying "if U try to make money U are doing sterile and repetitive radio"

that is not necessarily the case with all stations everywhere. if it's that way where U live i feel sorry 4 U. but there is entertaining, successful radio all over america. if U are doing radio like it's still the 90s U have nobody to blame but yourself. if it's a station U work for that is, get out and find something better. harping about how "radio used to be" gets U nowhere (except in radio chat rooms where other frustrated wannabees can commiserate with U-which also gets U nowhere).

Secondly, you do not blame the patient for the symptoms. You blame the disease. Greed at the expense of product has gotten out of hand in radio broadcasting, and no sane person could think otherwise. Declining localism, job cuts, narrower playlists, more syndicated programming, and less input by the public. I am not being negative here. I love this business and I dont want to see it all come down to a closet full of computers in San Antonio. Sorry if my love for what I do offends you or makes me a negative person.

love of radio is what drives us all. REALITY CHECK: radio audio has been on digital storage (computers) for over 10 yrs. now. get used to it.

how can u say "I'm not being negative here" after saying "Declining localism, job cuts, narrower playlists, more syndicated programming, and less input by the public.". the complaints U make about radio today were made about radio 10, 20 and 30 yrs ago. are U doing anything about it or just criticizing because U are frustrated with where your career is (or isn't) going?
 
It's now negativity to state facts? My career is doing just fine but I have a broader viewpoint than my own selfishness or desires. I want to see more innovation and more creativity, more people loving what they do, and better sounding radio for everyone. I truly don't see where you have any right to attack me on these boards for simply stating the truth.
