Anyone think South 107 will REALLY make an impact in Atlanta?

I was driving back to Atlanta from Chatanooga on Saturday, caught South 107 the whole way. They had a pretty good variety, the girl on the air was really good and a strong signal. My question is , do you think it will even touch the Bull or Kicks?

They have a CP for a second upgrade that will be completed in less than a year. But they won't really be an Atlanta station.

The CP raises the HAAT from 158m to 281m. Unfortunately, something is wrong with the FCC file that produces the 60db contour map for the construction permit. I sent an email to the person at the FCC who minds the database and hopefully that will be fixed soon. I have found issues before and the guy at the FCC usually has them fixed in about two days. I am interested in seeing the coverage for the raised height.

The map used to be correct. It shows the 60 dbu contour coming to the downtown connector. It will be a rim-shot, not the best and not the worst.
They are at a good place on the dial for Brent to get good reception at his house.(Most male models prefer Conway Twitty music when they do a shoot....)

Why do you have to be sarcastic, have I ever said anything derogatory to you????

Sorry, Brent!
People like you and me, who are highly opinionated, open ourselves up for a lot of the crap we get. I get my share, too!
Your numerous postings about Atlanta radio being horrible is almost comical though. Atlanta radio sounds like every other freakin' market in the USA.....people who argue otherwise are suspect.
One of the biggest problems with deregulation is that large companies have spread their cookie cutter formats across the nation. Hell....half the stations are voice tracked by the same 50 people. Before the 90's stations really did sound unique. You could tell you were in the sticks by listening to the radio - there was a hair lipped announcer in practically every small market but there was at least some variety with the speech impediments.......
I'm 55 and out of the prime demo too! I hate it that no one cares to program radio for me anymore.
Do like I did and buy a MP3 player.
I don't miss radio......

The license to cover was issued in the last 30 days, so the coverage map for the license covers the just completed upgrade. The new CP (although it is not really that new) is to raise the antennae on the existing tower. The database file is incomplete and that causes the FCC site to not generate the map for the CP. Also, radio-locator.com does not have the details ins their database for the CP and that means something is wrong in the data file they download daily from the FCC.

Since I am a nerd, I will wade through the FCC filings to see the map that was presented with the application.

Okay... I am confused. ... nothing new there.... There is a CP to raise the HAAT to 281m. In may of this year there is another app filed to put up a new tower somewhere with HAAT 181m. Can one of your engineering types have a look and see what the new app is about and if it is just a modification to the existing CP?

Me too, Steve! You can still occasionally hear that "small market sound" when you're cruising the countryside but it's rare these days.
When was the last time you heard a Piggly Wiggly spot?

No more 'Piggy Wiggy' where I come from for years. Hudson - Thompson Wholesale Groceries realized there was no future in paying a franchise fee, so all their stiores (Al, some W GA, Some MS, some TN, some FL panhandle) became Big Bear stores. The bear logo was exactly the same size as the pig... all they did was replace two pieces of plastic on the signs. But I miss 'em, and the hare lipped announcers. And going to fix something for some nickle and dime broadcaster in the boonies, and the whole place smells of smoking dope. And the receptionist and the GM or Sales Manager (if they had a seperate one) were always an Item. I miss the genre.

Well, years ago, I was speaking with the man who identified himself as the sales manager of a station in a small market in Ohio. He was giving me the rates, etc., when he said, "Excuse me. I have to cue up a record."

Jasper Ga and Ducktown TN still have Piggly Wigglies..

there are Piggly Wiggly locations in Nashville, too...have driven by 2 this week
(Lakewood and Inglewood)

One of my favorite memories of small town radio was the commercials.
It was a time before Walmart. It was a time when every small town that dotted the countryside had small, mom & pop businesses and every town had a "Main St." A well run small town radio station could at least provide the owner with a comfortable living - the guy with dreams could go and buy 6 AMs and 6 FMs and become wealthy.
The hare lipped guy would cut half the commercials. The others were done by the GM and receptionist when they weren't busy discussing the big bang theory. It was small town radio that taught me people actually eat pig tails and there really is such a thing as a pig ear sandwich.
It seems every small, southern town had it's own Piggly Wiggly. And those stores would spend big - "dollar a holler" gives a whole new meaning to a small town "saturation campaign." The bank would always buy time, even if they were over in the county seat.....there was always a funeral home, hardware store, and a farm supply/tractor distributer. And there was always the barber shop and the "beauty shop" where a lady could get one of those new fangled "Hollywood Beehive doos......"
There was always at least one used car lot and the guy there always dressed the part.....almost like it was a required to get the job. And my favorite small market moment was when political season would roll around. You have not lived if you've never heard city council candidates "radio wrestle."
After writing this I realize why I'm bored with radio.
I blame Walmart. Pat Buchannan was indeed right!

I've seen the proposed propagation for the most recent CP at a new tower site, and the signal should be roughly 90% of The River's signal as far as coverage is concerned. So, if you consider The River an Atlanta property, then by that logic WTSH should be considered an Atlanta property when the change occurs.

If so (I have no reason to doubt you) South 107 will not be a "rim shot". 106.7 was a serious challenger to Kicks 101.5 with similar coverage. If CBS really wants to do something with 92.9 then they better do so before 107.1 gets upgraded, unless CBS buys or LMA's 107.1 IMHO easy format holes in Atlanta:

Make a run at 98.5

Classic hits

Sports on FM is not a "sure shot" Disney / ESPN with FM in NYC has not improved the ratings. I feel the only way sports would work would be to get three of the four or the following, the Braves, UGA or GT, Falcons and the Hawks, I don't think the established operators will let that happen.

And the real "long shot" is LF ends up with South 107 and put the zone on it. Of course they might want to mess with Q100 or 98.5 with the signal.
