Anything, anything ... going on in radio in Oklahoma?

> This board is deader than KOKC.

Yeah, lately it seems that way. Well, we could always talk about classic TV shows, Batman! I know you're a big fan of TV (from way back when), like me.

....Oh, wait! That's what the Classic TV board is for! Oops! Nevermind!

P.S. You know something, Batman? Look on the bright side.....Things could be worse! The Oklahoma board could be the Kansas board. Boy! You want to talk about "nothing happening". LOL! I'm concerned that the next time the "powers that be" at Radio-Info get together, they're probably going to do away with the Kansas board altogether. Which would be a shame, because I like knowing what (if anything) is going on in Kansas, radio-wise.

I liked "The Green Hornet" ... and it was on radio.

So I guess I am back on topic ... sort of :).

Not sure the moderator even hangs around anymore. Sort of like school with the teacher sick ... and the sub does not show.

If they combined the Oklahoma and Kansas boards, we would still have zero posts.

One question: Is that goofy Roy Masters still buying late night time on KOKC? (don't you hate those call letters).

KOKC could gag a maggot.

Okay, I know this question has been asked at least a million times before, and it will probably be asked at least a million more times before the second coming of Jesus, but.......Why are there three talk radio stations in OKC?
That seems like one too many to me! (Maybe even two too many! LOL!)

Great question. I have wondered that myself.

And, it's not like people are listening in their cars.

Oklahoma City, geographically, is a huge city, but virtually no traffic. You can go almost anywhere in 30 minutes.

It takes that long to get through the "High Five" (75 Central and LBJ) in north Dallas some days.

Frankly, KTOK is sad, but wins by default.

Imagewise, it seems WKY mimics KLIF in Dallas with the same success -- meaning no success. But to be fair, I have not heard a lot of WKY lately.

But you are right, OKC needs three talk stations like it needs two all-sports stations -- except during OU football season, then you need eight :).

Do you think anyone else will reply :)?

Hi.

It looked like you needed a third person to join in the fun.

I use to look forward to catching up on my hometown market, Tulsa.

I agree, there is very little to look forward to anymore.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Sorry, fell asleep. Sounds like you two are OKC peeps. Gotta question. How is Wild 97.9 doing against Perrys "rimshot" station. At first I had heard they would not be a threat due to lack of coverage (not that Wild has a great singal). Anyway's, the numbers seem to reflect that they have had a huge dent into Wild's run. Comments?

There is no way OKC could support 3 talk stations. The question is who will get out first?

My bet is Renda will flip. N/T is a very expensive format to operate. The return could be very high, but not with 3 stations going after the same market.

You have to own the big images. Breaking news, weather, traffic, entertaining talk or sports. If you don't own one or two you might as well do something else.

Sorry, no help.

I live in Dallas. I loved Tulsa though when I worked there -- more than a quarter century ago.

It's hard to believe I am only 28 :)

There's another site for Kansas/Missouri, doubt i can say the name, but do a search, it's usually pretty active.

If you worked in Tulsa during the late 70s/early 80s, you had a chance to work with some great radio talent.

KWEN, KRAV, KAYI all had great people on-board. I still hear several of them still on in Tulsa. Kinda cool.

Several of those people could have left for bigger markets, but they wanted to stay in Tulsa. Most of them are on 103.3 now.

Two too many in my opinion. Let KTOK go back to being the only half-assed news-talker and call it good enough. For the reasons mentioned above, this market doesn't desire more than one talk station. The idiots from out-of-town that control the two other 1-share wonders need to grow some brains and realize it hasn't worked and it won't work here in OKC. Neither 930 or 1520 have put enough into it to take the format away from KTOK. It takes a tremendous amount of effort and funding to unmount KTOK from their thone. Then, what do you have? KTOK is a generally a 5 share station. Looks like fighting over 5 percent of OKC's listeners isn't a bright idea anyway for the 930 or 1520 bunch. We're not the typical cookie-cutter city like they are used to dealing with, so they might as well just try something else. How about true classic country, real oldies, or an asian format? How about older mexican music or mexician talk, or the combination thereof? There's lots of things that either 930 or 1520 could do that would be useful, but syndicated or unengaging local talk isn't it.

Flush both of them I say. The two most powerful signals on AM in this city are rotting away on the vine with talk. Try something worthwhile. Try something different.

Unfortunately, AM isn't suited for much of anything except for news or talk. Some cities have real oldies on AM, but it sounds like it did in the 1960s/70s when AM radio still ruled musically. Inferior sound quality for music.

I suppose you could have something different involving talk - the "Shakespearian readings" format comes to mind...

You know, what you said in your post reminds me of WBBZ Ponca City. As I'm sure you know, they are an AM oldies station that not only plays 1960's and 70's tunes---but that station even SOUNDS a lot like a 1960's-early 1970's AM station!! If you close your eyes when you listen to that station--and its sound quality--you'd swear you were in some sort of time warp and that it was 1969 all over again! Man!, talk about a real, living dinosaur of a station! But you know something? I actually enjoy listening to that station (whenever I can) precisely for that reason! Not only does that station play certain oldies tunes that I like to hear, but I also like the way that WBBZ sounds! Now I know that that may sound nuts to some people, and I understand that. But I look at WBBZ this way.....It's like when you have a 30 year old pick-up truck that's rusted-out, has a few dents in it here and there, and has about 250,000 miles on it. Now today's pick-up trucks look better than they did 30 years ago, this is true. And today's pick-up trucks certainly have all kinds of features in them and on them that pick-up trucks from 30 years ago didn't have......But, nevertheless, you still can't part with that "old clunker" of yours because even though it rides rough and may not be all that pretty to look at, it still has many memories tied into it and associated with it. To get rid of that old truck means throwing away 30 years worth of memories, and for a lot of "old-timers" and/or sentimentalists (like me) that's a really tough thing to do! So a lot of old-timers still prefer to hold on to that "clunker" of theirs! In many ways WBBZ reminds me of that 30 year old pick-up truck. WBBZ ain't what it used to be, and it can't be compared to what's out there now, that's for sure....But I still enjoy listening to WBBZ--and the way that it sounds--anyway! (Rust and all!)

So far as I know, WBBZ is a locally-owned station. Someday it will be sold, and when it is sold, it will probably change--in more ways than one! And when that happens, it will be like walking out into your driveway the morning after you finally sold that 30 year old pick-up truck that your wife never really liked since the day you two got married, and realizing for the first time that the "old clunker" is now gone for good........Never to return. (Lump in the throat time.)

I remember when KWON in Bartlesville went back on the air with mostly sattelite programming after a huge flood in 1986 on the Caney River wiped out the whole station. It felt like losing a old freind, same when KAKC flipped to MOR in 1978 and KELi finally dropped those calls after several format flips in 1985.

When I was going to school at Northern Oklahoma College in the early 80's, KLOR (then AC-almost-CHR) and KPNC (Country 101) were much more popular stations in North Oklahoma. WBBZ was considered the old-time AM station your parents listened to. That WBBZ has outlasted two (and later 3) strong local FM's with the same format for 25+ years is a miracle. It's proof that "live and local" programming geared to the community still works when you have strong ownership and dont cut corners. All the other Ponca FM's have changed hands several times and switched to full or part-time sattelite programming during the past decade.

Its not that expensive to run a full-time talk radio station when most programming is off the bird. Thats why so many AM's are doing it like KOKC.

The problem besides KOKC's poor programming is in the past 3 years it's never established its own identity from KTOK and WKY. It's still the old rocker tryin' to be a talker. That KOKC and WKY are still trying to make talk work is bewhildering, in other markets they would have been flipped by now.
