MRBIboredop said:I did a quick look at the Clear Channel stations, including the distant ones that are counted in the Boston book, and they control 19.5% of the market. If WGIR or WSRS, or even WHYN got enough listeners to get a .1 or .2, it would put CC at or over 20%
Now the 64 dollar question, is what is the maximum amount of the market a company is allowed to control? I know there is a number I just can't remember it off the top of my head.
Can you imagine if CC had to put a station in trust pending sale because they exceeded the cap?
Greater media with just 4 stations controls 21.9% of the market
So 2 companies control 41.4% of the market
Add in Entercom's stations at 11.9% of the market and we get 3 companies controlling 53% of the market.
Remind me again how de-regulation was going to foster competition?
To be fair, nobody foresaw the impact of the Internet on advertising revenues and nobody foresaw the Great Recession. Both have factored into the consolidation of radio and the erosion of real competition since deregulation.
