April Ratings

Some observations just looking at the 6+...

River is steady at a 5.7 and Rock is up to a 2.8. Is this Rock's best book yet? It will be interesting to see what, if anything, 105.7 steals.

Q100 is the CHR winner this month...with Power 96 coming in third.

All News is up to a 1.6, while WSB is off a little. This may work out for Cumulus yet especially if they get the billings.

98.9 is down to a 0.1. I can't help but think that Cumulus could do better with something else like classic hits (too late for alt).

92.9 is steady with a 0.6, same as 790 and worse than sister WAOK (who'da thunk that?). I know CBS is in it for the long haul, but they don't seem to be getting traction.

With all the complaining about Q100 being so conservative, musically unadventurous, playing 12 of the Top 40 hits etc., bottom line is...it's working, this time against both Power and Star, whose more liberal playlists cost them both downward trends

We thought they were crazy for keeping Macklemore in low rotation, skipping Mumford and OM&M, and yet, they're share is up while Power and Star are down - IMO this is why Jan Jeffries is the way he is

Go figure...

Seriously, I think they would do better with a canned comedy feed. Or a lineup of syndicated second-tier talk. It's not like Patron needs any help selling these days.

Side note: Is it just me or is country just not that hot in the ATL any more? Both Kicks and Bull seem a little weak. I thought country was supposed to be on one of its periodic upswings these days....? Or are 106.1 and 107.1 and the Bear getting more listeners who don't want the same old same old?

How are we defining an adventurous or liberal playlist? Considering Power has a playlist the size of 12 year olds I-pod, I would think Q100 is more liberal.

My definition of liberal vs conservative is the size of playlist and how wide range their music sounds. Power is much more dance oriented while Q 100 is a mix of everything.

People in the CHR forum have been complaining for years now about how slow Q100 is to add new music, and that the only reason they were doing well is because there was no competition, so people were "settling" for a mediocre station - now there's competition, and clearly, people are actively choosing Q100 over Power and Star

It's a sad state of affairs when a small playlist featuring less new music wins. Guess as a music lover, it's just irritating. I'm not in Atlanta at the moment (although the same mentality exists in Greenville, SC and pretty much everywhere), but as the clamoring for Radio 105.7 to open its playlist up (and from what I'm reading, they are), it worries me that they may suffer the same fate as a result. Guess it's different for people like us on these forums who actively follow radio and music vs. the general public who just seems to want more of the same.

Even so, the well-known heritage R&B powerhouse rakes in the biggest financial chunk for CBS.

I'm not sure how that justifies keeping 92.9 on the air

mmmm.... the reason Q100 beats Power has nothing to do with music.
It's all about The Bert Show. Outside of morning drive Q100 has NO ratings.
Thank you!

I'm sure music has something to do with it at some level.

* Luckily for Q100, top 40 music has coincidentally shifted more towards their traditional sound right around the same time they finally got adequate competition. This means it will make it a bit more of a challenge for Power to beat out Q100, although I'm sure it will happen down the road (even despite the fact that everyone thinks that it must happen today or it will never happen). This reminds me of when all the KZON haters were ready to get on me for predicting that rhythmic top 40 KZON would beat out the other CHR's because their ratings started to fall after getting a little high and then next thing everyone knew they were on top two years later.

* Also keep in mind that many Atlanta CHR listeners have been "mentally trained" to only hear and accept certain types of format sounds / styles for multiple years. Therefore, it will take a while for anything "new and unusual" to catch on, especially in a time when the hit music sound is going the direction that Atlanta's CHR's have been already pushing for a few decades.

* WiLD had a couple of (at least two) chances of succeeding. However, each time they started to get decent numbers, someone messed it up. If they had been on 96.1 all along they would've surely been at least equal to or playing ratings-tag team with Q100 by now, if not leading them a little bit. After all, WiLD did get high 3 shares twice with their shoddy signals. The first time it happened before someone EXTREMELY messed up the playlist, and the second time was... well, I don't even remember when, but it was after they hired a new PD to "fix" the damage that had been done. Then Power came on their huge clear signal and that surely did bring WiLD back down big time. I guess Q100 20 on 20 helped WiLD's final demise as well.

Good news, however, is that unlike early WiLD, Power has a better chance of catching on faster and lasting longer than WiLD because in addition to their huge clear signal, Power also got to have a good PD from the GET GO and the playlist is already fixed and focused.

* But I will never understand why they didn't just put WiLD on 96.1 to begin with. Power will catch on, but CC could've been doing much better than they currently are by now if only they did things differently from the beginning. They delayed their success by seemingly procrastinating, letting silly crap happen and taking all these unnecessary extra steps that occurred between the testing of rhythmic oldies Groove 105.7 and now finally top 40 Power 96.1! ... But I guess it's better late than never!

For those that have access to the ratings I have two questions:

-- Which show is doing better in the demo at All News 106.7... morning or afternoon drive?

-- How are the morning and afternoon drive shows at AN106.7 doing in demo compared to WSB.

Those are really the numbers that are being looked at, so I was just curious.

If by in demo you mean 25-54 adults and men, ALL News has more listeners in PMD than AMD as market listening as a whole in higher in afternoon drive. YAY ranks 19th in mornings, 20th in afternoons in terms of share.
If you compare apples to apples, when WSB is all news in the morning 5 to 9, WSB ranks 2nd in Adults, 1st in Men, YAY ranks 19th in adults and 16th in Men.
WSB's evening news, which is a talk show with more news, weather and traffic than other shows on that station, WSB ranks 3rd in Adults and 1st in Men, ALL News ranked 21st in Adults and 21st in Men.
The rankers from local ATL ad agency based on the Winter Q, Jan-Feb-Mar average.
Hope that answers your Q's

And that's all fine and good-- but more Atlantans listen to Melissa Carter and Greg Black as a whole than Michelle Wright and Andy Rose. In fact, for a while- middays were ranked the highest.

If you compare apples to apples

But it's not apples to apples- you also have to factor in age (I know for a fact that YAY is gaining in younger listeners 9-noon and 5-7 and WSB is losing younger listeners.) And, All News is a very older-skewing format, with WSB being more of a middle-aged male station.

YES, as the post stated ALL News has more listeners in PMD than AMD, correct sir, if you include everybody 6+ just shy of 30,000 more for Melissa and Greg, however, not so much with the next statement.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IF by younger listeners, as an example you mean 25 to 34 Adults, ALL NEWS had 39% more listeners in FEB than they did in MAR and 8.9% more listeners in FEB than they did in MAR between 5 and 7PM. WSB has actually gained younger listeners in MAR over FEB with Cain but lost listeners in that demo month to month between 5 and 7PM
Everyone would have to expect ALL NEWS, WSB, WABE will see audience growth in APR due to the horrible events in Boston.
