Arbitron market trend

Just FYI Derry is not a city, so technically speaking, it is the 4th largest population of towns and cities in NH. this is a common misconception. But I see your point.

Keene and Rutland are somewhat similar places.. If Rutland was in NH, it would be called Keene.. Both are landlocked places somewhat inhibited by modern transportation.. Keene benefits from being in a state that has a pro-business climate and it shows, Rutland hardly benefits from a state that is very anti-business and sadly that shows.. Rutland could easily be thrown into a Glens Falls / Rutland / Lake Geroge market defined situation as well.. Rutland is pretty equal distance from Glens Falls as it is to Lebanon.. The key difference is that more Glens Falls stations can be heard quite well in Rutland than any of the Lebanon stations...

Look...the arb numbers are great to boast about :) Let's face it though, it's all about the money. 1, 2 or 20...show me the money and then we'll have a party!!! ;) NUFF SAID :-* :-* :-*

In New York, Boston, Albany, or Burlington.. What do #1 bragging rights in the quirky market of #179 mean ?

Jo Jo being #1 in any market is a an accomplishment. Why would you classify Burlington among Boston and New York?

In Burlington / Plattsburgh the top station or stations can set the 'rate agenda' and 'attitude' for the rest of the market, as in the case of WOKO and to some extent WEZF.. Certainly WOKO has a tremendous and relevant story to tell. That seems to be a far cry in a disjointed market like #179 where certainly some of the quoted 'lesser' ranked market stations command higher rates than some of the stations that appear at the 'top' of the ratings there.. Is your "Springfield" a disjointed market as well for you Mr. Marbles ?

#179 is far from disjointed. Mixx is a heritage A/C. Great programing and always leading the way in the arbs. They set the tone and "rate agenda" in the market. ;)

But isn't "Mixx", one X or 2 there, is basically a local yokel Rutland station on a big signal. Might as well be talking in another language to the Upper Valley..

I happened to listen to WJJR Mix 98 yesterday. I don't know anyone there but I will say it sounded terrible. The jock (a woman in midday) had no energy and sounded very voice-tracked. The imaging was uninspiring (whoever voices it is awful) and the music seemed to be all over the place. If it does well in Rutland then in has to be "in-spite" of the sound...not "because" of it! I had heard people say the station was programmed poorly and it turns out they are right.

Per 2006 census:

Manch: 109,500
Nashua: 87,200
Concord: 42,400
Rochester: 30,100
Dover: 28,400
Derry: 22,700
Keene: 22,600
Portsmouth: 20,600

I don't care what size market you are in, being #1 is an honor. Of course it means more in Boston or New York, but if you work in Rutland and you are number one, why shouldn't you feel good about that?? It's great for sales and it's a great feeling if you are on the programming side as well.
Everyone is an expert on this board. It only matters what the listener thinks, not the rest of us geniuses

Number 1 is an honor with all things being defined as equal.. In Boston, New York , and even Burlington / Plattsburgh the vast majority of the stations cover the metro and most parts (or at least populated parts) of the TSA.., so a ratings snapshot of the market can have some validity.. In describing "Market #179", only 3 out of at least 20 to 25 signals can 'reach' all three cities listed in the definition of market #179.. Lebanon, Rutland, White River Jct..

It's great for sales and it's a great feeling if you are on the programming side as well.
It's great for sales when a rep can ask and justify a high rate as a result of the programmers' good work and efforts, if that is the case.

To be honest, WEBK was precisely that, and grew into something very grass roots and different to listen to... until Dan Ewald sold it off to Pamal the first time around.

Additionally, WJJR seemed to have a considerable UV following back when Bruce Lyons was responsible for boosting its power, and WKXE was not yet Vox-owned and still eclectic (much like WEBK came to be, only with a much smaller signal).

By the way, HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

WJJR also had a Lebanon / Hanover translator at 103.9 at one time with a CP to move it with more juice to 98.5. 103.9 is now owned by VPR, and 98.5 was withdrawn.. Somewhere I have my collection of worthless radio crap is a vintage "WJJR Unrock Stereo FM 98 and FM 104 " bumper sticker.. Crank it up, and rip the knob off !! :D

Happy New year !

But then again, my whole point of the disjointedness of Market 179 is that none of the Lebanon stations have had repeaters to reach into Rutland, though there really is no genuine need. At one time, Q106 had WHDQ-FM1 off the top of Pico at one time that got a signal into the Rutland area. That booster went away, the equipment was used to other purposes, and classic rock lived on locally and thrived in Rutland at 101, The Fox..

Did that booster go away because of the transmitter move from Green Mountain to Ascutney? A potential engineering snafu with signal crossover?

The Booster went away in mid 2000. The booster proved to be redundant since Classic Rock 101, The Fox picked up a huge head of steam of success in Rutland quickly. Both Q106 and 101, The Fox were and are under the same ownership. The equipment on Pico was used to help in a very basic way to send via an STL link, 101, The Fox's over the air signal from the top of Pico to the top of Mount Snow to get the signal to the station once known as "Oy Vay" 100.7 WVAY which simultcasts with 101 The Fox in Rutland in the Deerfield Valley.

When did the disjointed, fragmented, and ill defined market known as Lebanon, Rutland, and White River Junction drop down to #181 from #179? Between the defined markets of Mercad, California at 180 and Binghamton, NY at 182 ? What's up with that ???
