arbitron

Upon discovering that six FALL 2007 BINGHAMTON metro diaries were returned from a media-affiliated household, ARBITRON has announced that it will re-issue the book for that market. A revised FALL 2007 BINGHAMTON Radio Market Report (ARBITRON eBook) will be released on Thursday, Feb. 28th, at 10a ET.

Without the six "tainted" diaries, the audience estimates for EQUINOX BROADCASTING Oldies WCDW and AC sister WRRQ is said to be "substantially affected." Sample balancing and reprocessing procedures is expected to "slightly" affect the numbers for other stations.

I can't believe nobody is talking about this.

Shame-shame We all know that this is a no-no. Is there any legal action that Arbitron can take?

What were the "original" ratings for that station before the report was recalled?

I don't get this, they're saying that of the 11 people on company staff from GM to Board Op, that what six diaries were placed in a related household? I've been in radio for 12 years and I've never even heard of someone with ONE dairy let alone know them personally. How is it possible that six fall within affiliated people?

This is so frustrating, because there is so few of us on staff to begin with, I can't believe someone would do anything intentially to undermined all our hard work... we're just getting going, the phones light up now, the contesting is taking off, our websites are fully interactive and it just felt like we were doing something right that the audience was definately growing... now this is like saying no hold on, you aren't improving you don't deserve those mentions.

It's like someone telling me that I cheated, and that I waste 75 hours a week for nothing. When I was on Star we went down to Maryland (I believe it was) to view the actual diaries, as a subscriber again, I'd love to go and see these diaries and ask how six diaries manage to even get sent or returned from the same household and who the six were to link 'em to whomever is at fault. I don't want all my hard work and organizing going for nothing.

You gotta be kidding.........you're gonna posture here to say that nobody inside the building knew about this? And you don't how 6 diaries get thrown out? It's someone that's married and has kids or close to it...and don't think someone can't pursue them legally considering there's dollars on the line here.

Stop wasting your time here and focus on getting good ratings LEGALLY! Being in a small market with low return to begin with, 6 diaries depending on their QH's listening can make a big swing for a couple of stations...bad way to do the fall book!

Thanks for the Friday night humor about your "innocence"! LOL

Here's the bottom line. This book was so messed up, obviously somebody contacted Arbitron, and they started an investigation. Do you really believe that WAAL went down to a 3.9? Give me a break. I find it hard to believe that Q 107 could do as well as they did, considering the really bad signal, no format, 5,000 songs in rotation, and the birds nest of translators all over town. Cool is a different story. Considering they are the only "semi" oldies station in town, they should be at the top of the heap 50 plus, and wind up with about a 3 - 4 share 12 plus. But again, weak signal, too many translators, and 5,000 songs in rotation. I know, everybody says it's not the size of the stick, it's how you use it. I agree 100%. But from a competitive stand point, in a market like Binghamton, it's going to be very hit or miss. I'm sure everybody knows that by now. Take Wild 104 for example. That station came on strong, and was holding a level ground for a long time. The only CHR in town, a decent signal....a 4 share? Not good. Way to recurrent and gold based. Yes, with any CHR, you want to be conservative between 6A-7P, but when a record goes to the top 5 on the chart, regardless of weather it's a pop, rock, or urban record, it should be played 24/7, not 7P-5A only. It's a hit for a reason, people lke it. I feel bad for Matt, because I hear that he has very little control of that station even though he is the PD. But that's the way it is now days. Star 1057....well, that's a whole different story. A friend of mine always says, "this is such an easy business, but everyone makes it so damn hard". He's so right. That's enough of that. By the way Justin, I hate to burst your bubble, but you and everybody else over there at Pee Wee's playhouse radio really need to wake up. All of you live in your own little radio world, and now you're caught. Considering it says CDW & RRQ will be substantially affected....G U I L T Y. Oh man, just how low can some go.

Sure they did! It is a mess!

The tip off was George's WPHD showing up in the book along with increases from his other 2 stations.

This is 12+:

WPHD oldies Europa Communications, Inc. 0 0 0 0 1.8

WRRQ AC Equinox Broadcasting Corp. 0 0 0 0 3.2

WCDW oldies Equinox Broadcasting Corp. 3.7 0 0 0 4.3

The 25-54, TSL, etc, for these stations is really wacked.

A TSL of 49:45 for WPDH?

Justin do care to comment on that?

Oh wait, aren't you on that station too?

And WCDW?

And WRRQ?

http://www.myq107.com/djs.asp

Oops....

Lets see now, all three stations had dramatic increases, all three owned by the same company, all three have studios at the same location on Court Street and you are on the air on all three.

Oh I know, I'm picking on you and your little group over there. Well my friend, payback is b***h. Either you were directly involved, or are so out of the loop to believe that those ratings were real.

Or you really think you are so smart and have everyone fooled.

Justin,

You should have just kept your mouth shut. You of all people should not have posted what you did. You never heard of someone getting a diary? Again...silence would have been better. Think back over the past couple of books and you probably want to change your statement. From day one when the book came out it was so obvious what happened. I am a big radio fan. I still believe in local radio but come on, Your stations will never amount to anything. The biggest concern of the company is how many translators you can put on the air to interfere with other stations. I listen to WILD 104 and most of the time your 104.5 over powers it. Mix 103, 102.9 has taken care of that signal. Instead of putting out a good product, you would rather try to bring everyone else down because of your inferior products. Your stations are a mess, you know they are but there is nobody there to fix them. Fix your main signals, which you can do and get rid of the translators. You will see a nice increase. As a good friend said to me, he loves oldies, I am not going to change the freakin station every 5 minutes as the signal fades. I would rather listen to the next best thing in town to oldies, Mix. By the way, Arrogance kills and what you have is dead.

Well ..... now that the new numbers have been released (2/28) ..... what does the book look like now?

Does anyone have the update??

The 2 cheaters got their numbers sliced in half, everyone else went up a tenth or two...except Hawk which crosses the 14 barrier with 12+.

No matter what and we knew that the two stations don't have numbers, the ratings are screwed up. There is no way WAAL is at a 4.0 and did you see where KGB ended up. Mix didn't produce for Christmas? Cmon? Magic lost the women but gained a ton of men, Give me a break. These are serious problems with the ratings. Arbitron has lost their touch.

Lost their touch..........they haven't had one in 5 plus years. Until they figure out a way to reach potential diary keepers in homes that only use cell phones (more than half in U.S. are that way now with 18-34)...numbers will continue to be screwed. 36 W 18-34 diaires over 12 weeks doesn't show an accurate representation.

Not offering more than a dollar to return don't work either! WAAL isn't a 4.0, but it's not where it should be either. Needs more of a manly sound in AM drive. Bit more attitude as well...

Granted WAAL should not be a 7 or a 4. They are not the format they say they are. I consider them more of an AC Rock station without Currents. They play the same stuff as Star, Mix and Magic. Star, Mix and Magic are the AC's of the area so WAAL loses.

Magic's back to playing classic rock? Welcome to "Wheel Of Formats". They should merge with the "cheaters" to form another company, then they might have a chance to compete against the other 2 companies. But then again, they'd have to figure out where to move to, since neither currently has the space. That means re-wiring the 40 translators that the "cheaters" run.

Whale needs to add more 90-95 rock, now considered classic rock by most in the format. Classic rock in it's form of late 60's-early/mid 80's doesn't hold much for the M 25-54 ear if there's not entertaining jocks that do something other than rip & read from an internet entertainment news site or try to do a Top 40 style morning show on a classic rock station. Just telling the truth as I hear it.

Amazing that "Mr. Hockey" hasn't had anything to say since he was told to keep quiet...god I hope the owners of Equinox chop your salary in half....guess that "let's buy ratings book" idea from the "genius" promotion director didn't work out too well? You make over 45K to be a promo dir. and wearing a mascot outfit in Binghamton? LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL! Nice try!

The way things are going at Citadel, the people at WAAL won't have to worry about it, Farid will have fired everyone but the janitor by the end of the month!

I am sorry, I wasn't clear on what I meant. I meant that WAAL resembles a more Adult Contemporary station than a Classic rock station. That is why the comparison to Star, Mix & Magic. Sorry for the confusion. I would doubt that Magic would ever merge with who you call the "Cheaters". There would be nothing to gain for Magic, More to gain for the latter. But you never know.

That's MR. Promotions Director/Athletic Dept Game Coordinator/Online Promotions Rep/ & Mascot to your sorry anonymous a$$!

Obviously all this trash talk is garbage. The fact you don't have the balls to back up your wild claims and feel the need to go personal, while hiding behind a screen name shows how much weight your accusations really have, NONE.

As for how much I make, I work for 4 different employers and I'm happy... So either you're feeling sorry for me overworking or you jealous? Either way no one cares about your slander so grow up!

Mr.....don't think so! I'd say Ms. since your behavior, ego, & overall ability is closer to the likes of Perez Hilton & soon to be Idol failure Danny Noriega!

I don't have the balls to back my claims??!?!? Knowledge and experience is what I have. Can't say the same about you. AND, the fact that you find "these claims" to be sooooooooooooo wrong...shows how true it is. Guilty parties always feel the need to tell their "side" of the story & to try and make themselves look good despite being the obvious wrong.

BTW...I would never....EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...in a million years feel sorry for someone that works for or is part of such an obvious scam that was thankfully busted!

Nice try...chalk up another victory for the good guys. Now go dryclean your mascot outfit and stop staring in the locker room!

I don't agree with bashing Justin. That's not with this board is for. We need to keep personalities out of this. It's a shame what has happened with the Arbitron. It's a shame that the stations in question will never do better than a 2 share legitimately. Besides the horrible programming on both stations, the translators are actually killing them. I talked to a radio consultant a few weeks ago and he told me a great story. A station he consulted was doing OK and they added 3 translators and they lost half of their numbers. They thought it was a fluke so they went through another book and again lost a little more. They turned off the translators and the numbers were back up for two consecutive books. In the case here in Binghamton, the translators are there to cause interference with the full power stations. They are not put on the air to help their situation. Confusion is the answer. Even if they had listeners, confusion will cause them to lose out. It has been proven many times. If the owner of these stations was serious about radio, they would just enhance the full power stations, fix the programming and eliminate the translators. The other stations might then have a little fear, a little fear. Right now it's a laughable situation that will never gain them a dime. Instead of treating the stations like toys, treat them like a business and thrive.
