Are Changes Coming To KLIF?

We have heard the news that Greg Knapp has left KLIF. Has anyone heard anything about the possibility of anyone else leaving?
The last rating book they took a bit of dive down in the ratings. As I recall, they were at a miserable 1.2. If changes are afoot, what could be done to improve their numbers? Is there any hope?

As a retired (52 year old) school teacher, I spend quite a bit of time listening to the radio during the week. I'll have to admit that the only time I tune in to KLIF is to listen to Ed Wallace's show on Saturday morning. Week in and week out it's one of the best local shows on the air.

I agree Ed Wallace has a very good show. He's prepared and informed. Unfortunately, all of his "good buddies" he refers to on the show gets tiring. After all, he's just a used car salesman. (which is not a BAD thing). But in Ed's own mind, he thinks he's God's gift to talk radio. And that ego comes out every time he opens the mike. It's too bad, because the guy knows cars. Maybe if he stopped at Toni and Guy more than once a year his head would fit through the door. Hey Ed, stop trying to be a star and bring it down a notch. Everyone will love you for it.

That's a good point. I also like Martin Bernback (sp) Ankarlo is getting old, Glenn Beck is obnoxious, O'reilly just doesn't come across on radio as he does on TV. Some of the weekend shows on KLIF are just awful. Some weekend talk host local or syndicated would be great but those awful info shows rule$$. The newly added Rusty Humpries is just another Rush wannabe.

The imaging on KLIF is obnoxious too. OVER produced. However KLIF still sounds better than KRLD ANYDAY. KSKY sounds ok. Maybe Savage will hep KLIF some.

Ankarlo will be gone in 30 days. You heard it here first.

And if you had been reading "Dallas Digest" yesterday you would have seen this:

a usually reliable source tells me that ankarlo is bailing out of the not-so-big 570...he'll be gone in 30 days...:?

The author is none other than the administrator of the site, Kevin McCarthy.

Ankarlo's buddy was the afternooon guy. Ankarlo brought him in.

Am I shocked at the recent KLIF developments, not really. I think anyone whos known the station for years has seen the writing on the wall over the past decade. Susquehanna (and now the new owners) always put a low priority on this station when it came to budget and talent (No offense to K MAC, seeing he was the only bright light there). I have a feeling the new regime is wanting all syndie all the time.

Actually when I started there in 1993, KLIF was a top 15 station 12+. I don't know what happened after I left in 1999, but I really think that bringing Tommy Kramer pissed off alot of the loyal listeners. Then Steve Konrad totally blew it with the Big 570 idea. The Ticket did hurt KLIF because it became the darling of Susquehanna Nation. Have they hired a new PD yet?

Yes that big 570 was almost as bad as CBS "Blink". I think when Norm left to go to the ticket was when KLIF lost it's momentum, If you reallt want to go back, wasn't it Dan Bennett that let El Rushbo goe to WBAP. Brilliant!

I still maintain though KLIF by far sounds better than KRLD. For a 50KW to be in the 1's is pathetic.

I'm reminded of perhaps one of best lines in the movie "The Fugitive." Tommy Lee Jones, when first surveying the awesome train wreck site, says "My, my, my. What a mess."

With KLIF, it's a train wreck that never ends.

Just to clearify:... Rush Limbaugh was on KGBS AM1190 when its parent company ordered it off ANY STATION that wasn't ABC affiliated-- thats how 1190 lost Rush in 1992... and shortly there after-- the owner of KGBS (Mike Russell) went after Morton Downey Jr., and brought him to Dallas in January of 1993....

As for the BIG570, its main problem is the fact that the best lineup in Dallas Talk Radio History was imploded--- the first to go was David Gold, then Kevin McCarthy, then Norm, then--- well you get the idea... nothing that station can do right now, will bring back its luster... the smartest thing to do is bring KTCK down to 570 and move KLIF to 1310, then bring in some local talent (key word TALENT) and let them bring back a bit of the glitz that the COMMUNITY needs to hear from... not so much on a NATIONAL level, but more of what Mark Davis does, on a local level.. both Dallas/Ft.Worth ends of things... THERE might be a niche there for someone like a Bob Ray Sanders to return along with maybe Kevin, I doubt that David would return.. but there are a few others out there that can hold their own as talk show host...

Just a thought!

Amen.

One of the biggest problems with KLIF is that nobody besides Ed Wallace can find their way to Fort Worth or Arlington without a map.

Saw Knapp in FW once, I think. Never saw Ankarlo. They never talk about anything but Dallas, Dallas, Dallas, or Mexico, Mexico, Mexico.

Going hard-right on immigration really backfired. They had nobody listening but extremists, and there weren't enough to pull a good number.

Is this the same John Cook that was PD at WILD 100 ???

Was wondering the same thing. Is he the same guy who worked in San Antonio?

Just to clarify, KLIF carried Rush for two hours on Saturday & Sunday afternoons in the late 80s. I don't recall Rush ever being on 1190. When Rush got hot, carrying his show live--not on delay---11am-2pm became a requirement that KLIF wasn't willing to do and the syndicator made an exception of when WBAP came calling when they switched to all news & talk from news & country in the early 90s.

I agree with the rest of your post. It's a shame that the only real "live and local" talk stations in DFW are 1310 and 105.3.
