Compelling, exciting, dramatic!? I will give props though they did move up in the ratings.

What do you think of this promotion?

Everywhere it's done this promotion works. It also tends to drive the competition nuts. Particulary when someone eventually shows up at a KISS remote and asks everyone there Are You The Fly 92.3 $10,000 Fugitive?

Results tend to show up about a month or two after the promotion ends. Cume and TSL bumps. But the residuals are incredible. You've got listeners marketing your station.

The new promotion director that they hired for WFLY & WAZJ is shaking things up and he hasn't been there 90 days yet.
______________

The KISS aspect of this is about the only thing I like. I found the web stuff to be long(in terms of loading) & tedious. I really can't see adults getting into this. Fly's kiddie demo will be all over it. I think they've over complicated this one, or maybe I just don't really understand how it works. Perhaps if I were under the age of 24 it might make more sense to me. Call me old!

This promotion hooks in the P1's like you can't imagine. And not only do adults get into this, females 25-30 really seem to get into this. In market after market where the contest has been executed properly, the winners have all been in their mid-to-late 20s to early 30's.

In my market the winner was a 28 year old female that teamed up with her 30 year old friend to keep track of the clues. Yes, I said teamed up with. Many listeners work together in groups to track clues. Teens are definitely aware but they usually don't win because they've got the attention span of about 10 seconds at best. And to win this contest you've got to stay focused, track the clues and piece this together.

Most radio guys that poo-poo this promotion as "too this" or "too that" or "it doesn't sell the station" usually have some splaining to do to their GM when the book comes out and the cume and tsl of the station that executed the contest gets a definite "pop".

Am I the only one that thinks the public is SO naive? I mean props to FLY it is a great promo. But do people really believe that a real "fugitive" would answer the question "Are you the FLY 92 fugitive?" They are pulling out all the stops and doing it well but would a real criminal call and leave clues at prime time every day? COMe on! People make me laugh.i
______________

I doubt any listener thinks the Fly 92.3 $10,000 Fugitive is a real honest to God criminal, I mean ya'll are New Yorkers but you're not THAT crazy.

We're all VERY close to radio and are obviously jaded by our close association. But to the typical listener that just wants to hear their favorite songs, win some prizes and be entertained; they get sucked into these promotions IF they're promoted and imaged well and they'll play along. Theatre of the mind.

Besides the real reason you do promotions/contests isn't to get winners it's to have fun with your audience. And this contest has a real bonding effect between the radio station and listeners.
______________
