David, My issue with Mr. Richards has nothing to do with his opinion about KABC, that is what this board is all about. My issue with him, as I stated, is his condescending, holier-than-thou attitude towards other posters. I am not the only one to notice this behavior and am not the only to comment on it. It is also obvious to anyone who visits this site. I also find it ironic that you jump to his defense on this particular issue. I recall a few years ago I made a comment on one of your posts that deviated from the topic being discussed to talk about spanish media, which had absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand. Your response was that that was the nature of message boards, the discussion goes where it goes. Fine. Maybe you could confer with KM about proper netiquette.

As for my research, I looked as hard as I needed to. I tried searching by frequency, call letters, etc. Could not find the station. I imagine this would be the way others might search for his station; Google and the like. I can't imagine some GM somewhere spending even as much time as I did looking for this "station."

I stand by my assertions that he is condescending, holier-than-thou and a muddler of discussions in his own right. I guess deviating from the topic is only acceptable for "certain people" on this board.

Unfortunately for the world of discussion boards, the word "condescending" (defined by Webster as "showing that you believe you are more intelligent or better than other people") is a favorite of those who are proven wrong by those who have the knowledge to set an incorrect statement right.

It is very easy to appear to be condescending on a message board, where there is no face-to-face contact to give better meaning to what is being said. And it is also easy to use that word when one is hurt by being corrected.

"Holier-than-thou" is a direct descendant of whether one feels hurt by another's correction. I will therefore consider Rob's use of those terms to be his opinion unless I am told by RD management that they also feel the terms apply to me. That's pretty much the best you can hope for, Rob.

As for "muddling", I should probably think of a better way to describe the unfortunate practice of people taking threads deeply down side tracks. Indeed, by my original definition this entire conversation that Rob and I are sort of having could be described as muddling.

Rob, I'm going to try to help you out with this. Try not to think I'm being condescending ... just sharing a resource that most radio professionals (including GMs) would be much more likely to use than Radio-Locator.

FCCInfo is provided as a free industry resource by the consulting engineers Cavell & Mertz. While it doesn't have the pretty maps that R-L has, it does allow for very quick and accurate searching using the FCC Consolidated Media Database System (CDBS).

The link is http://www.fccinfo.com ... here's how you would have tracked down the relationship between the AM station KRKE and the FM translator it was using:

1. Put KRKE in the "historic call sign" field. This will cause a search across all services for all station records in CDBS which ever had those call letters. Hit the "historic call search" button.
2. The first two entries on the results page are for KRKE at 1090 and KQNM at 1550. Note that the call letters have only been on 1090 since the end of September ... click on that entry to see why.
3. That page gives you a brief overview of the station at 1090. Click on the call letters.
4. Right under the call letters KRKE is the call sign history. Note that 1090 had the KQNM calls up until that September date. Go back to the first results back and click on KQNM, then on either of the brief overviews on that result page.
5. A-HA! The two stations did swap calls on September 22.
6. Scroll down to "associated facilities" and click on "K233CG(FX)", then note that it operates on 94.5, rebroadcasting 1550. Click through to its full information page.
7. Scroll down to "other K233CG applications". The resulting page from that click comes directly from the FCC CDBS server.
8. The first application listed is a BLSTA, which if you click on "application" will show that a Special Temporary Authorization has been requested for the translator because its feed station (1550) is silent. (You would find a similar STA request under KQNM's application list requesting silent authority pending sale.)

Eight fairly simple steps and you find that KRKE was on 94.5, via K233CG, until the end of September.

Again, not being condescending here, but now you know where I get information when I post about stations' technical facilities, call letter changes, etc. I have to look things up too.

I wasn't going to chime in, but I have to ask -- how does this statement:

Obviously, the man is out of touch, as he says he is "thrilled to be back on the great 790 KABC, where we had great success."

... square with this:

Posting just for the sake of posting isn't really great netiquette.

As a radio pro you most realize that Bell has to do some sucking up. What's he supposed to say, "I'm depressed to be back on KABC but I had no choice?" Come on.

The first quote is clearly "posting for the sake of posting."

I was once criticized and accused of being a troll not because the content of my post, but because of the fact that I had made few posts here. I just let it roll off my back and consider the source. Of course folks like this will never pause to reflect on their persona as in their world it is always the other guys fault, even when there are a lot of "other guys". Some folks don't have a mirror in their home!

I wonder how someone who is actively employed in the industry has time to make 5,700 posts. On the other hand if one were idle I guess you have a lot of time to post. Don't hold your breath waiting for an explanation of his "industry experience".
