Agreed...but that's not your original argument. John went out on his own after leaving Stern and, contrary to what you first said, HAS made it and made it well.

I'll be the first to say John does absolutely NOTHING for his pay and he wouldn't be where he is had Howard not hired him...but he HAS made it post-Howard. Heck...the fact that he really does NOTHING for what he gets paid REALLY lets you know he's "made it" just fine.

he got a job because they thought they could tap into the audience from whence he came. he got paid because he was associated with howard.

so yeah he made it but certainly not on his own.

No, actually he got paid $500k a year because that is the going rate for his position. It's really not much for the role in TV terms (a overworked daytime talk producer makes between $3k and 4k a week) but then again I think he does the least I've ever seen in such a role.

So if I went to Yale, got a law degree, and got a job at a law office making more than someone who went to Middle Alabama State Law School...that wouldn't be me making it on my own, that would be making it because of my association with Yale? Yes? Doesn't matter if I was the right guy for the job, right?

When casting "Alvin and the Chipmunks," why did they use big-name actors to voice the chipmunks instead of random voice actors? Their voice is sped-up and unrecognizable anyway. Oh, that's right...cuz in show business, having a name and having "been there before" and having a fan base is, whether you like it or not, a skill/qualification for a job. John was lucky to have Howard hire him and he parlayed that experience into a really cake job...on his own. Howard MOST CERTAINLY didn't call Jay and say "I've got this guy you should hire...take my word for it." John had something that Leno wanted. John made it himself.

hey jessejames, are you stuttering John or a relative of his. John did not make it on his own. A good example of making it on your own is David Mathau, son of Walter Mathau. He did not use his father or his fathers name to get into the radio business. He began working saturdays at a small am radio station in Salem New Jersey, making minimum wage from noon to sign off. Calling it something like Marathon with Mathau. He has been in the business ever since the 1980s. Thats making it on your own. I guess you can say, a person who has alot of money, because he inherited it, is successful. I do give John credit for being able to make money while having no talent. I have no talent and Im still poor. lol. But dont act like no one else had anything to do with it. Guarenteed it was Howards connections which enabled John to get that job. Would they have hired any no talent, stuttering guy for that job. Sometimes its not what you know, or how talented you are. Its who you know. Thats what happened with John.

"Marathons with Mathau". I see he changed his name (so he wouldn't be using his father's name ::)). "Stuttering John", strangely, doesn't stutter on the Tonight Show. Fact is, both of these guys worked their butts off to be where they are.

Thank you, "Walking On!"

John started out as in intern making $0 for Howard, btw. He used his own merit to get Howard to hire him in the first place.

Personally, I don't like John at all. We're not related and I don't know John personally, though we have worked for the same people. He was funny with Stern. He stinks on The Tonight Show...terribly unfunny in the few bits they do with him and his voice is very lacking. He's great at lifting a coffee mug, though.

Horrible analogy comparing a someone who succeeded in one of the more highly regarded universities with a guy who was a glorified intern and got a job and it wasn't because Stern runs a great school for announcers.

Of course Howard didn't push him. Niether did Stutter-face train for nor apply for the Tonight show announcer job. He didn't get that job by dint oif his hard work and preparation, Jay's ppl sought him even though he'd never demonstrated any ability to speak professionally so they could get "edgier". Stutterin was just one of the luckiest slobs on earth.
