New York Post reports a new network name is in the works before its September launch.

Word is that the name of the new network created by the merger of the WB and UPN — the CW — does not have long to live.

Execs at the new net say there may be a change, despite the insistence of CBS boss Les Moonves that they'd stick with the clumsy name.

Already, jokes are flying about "the WC" (short for water closet) and that CW stood for "Could Work" network.

The name was created by combining the C from CBS, parent company of the old UPN, and the W from the WB...<P ID="signature">______________

They are an arm of Rupert Murdoch's evil empire, you know the one that abruptly pulled the UPN logo from the UPN affils they own.
Also, the Post tends to get a lot of things wrong or just plain lies. Perhaps you can find a real newspaper as a source?<P ID="signature">______________

Well, it is a clunky name. . . Maybe they'll actually try to go with something other than a set of initials? Just because it's traditional doesn't mean you HAVE to do it that way.

(Yes, I know Fox isn't a set of initials, but it's short enough to be one.)

Not only is that a good point, but I've seen stories written just by something that was said on the discussion board, and then it circulates back here. That's why I'm so strongly against "I heard a rumor" type stuff. And, I find it interesting, that just yesterday, Scott posted that he didn't think "CW" would be the final name. The next day, it's in the Post. You be the judge...

I like "The WMC" Network. Has a nice ring to it. :eek:D

I have powers I didn't even know I had! :)

But seriously, folks - regardless of the Post's ownership, it does cover the media capital of the free world, and its gossip columnists know their stuff. Their radio columnist, John Mainelli, is one of the best in the business, and their coverage of TV is pretty widely respected in the industry.

It's not brain surgery, in any event, to figure out that Les Moonves and his colleagues up the street at the Time Warner Center really don't want to spend the next nine months hearing "WC" jokes.

How about those stations that will not be affiliated with the new The CW, rather than go independent, but go the commercial version of Public TV. An educational TV station that is supported by advertising.

That's even worse? Who'd want their TV network associated with a mediocre "punk" band (who'd probably sue a la Spike Lee anyway) or a Pac-Man ghost? :)

I know you mean to say that "you" think Blink is a mediocre punk band. Whether it's rock music or television, I'm sure you agree that taste is mattter of opinion, not fact.

As for "Blink" as being a name for a network, a certain failed NYC radio station comes to mind. Personally, I'd like to see The Spike Network debut!

What makes you say PBS isn't supported by adveritising? Especially when I have to sit through "This edition of NOVA is paid for by.... (insert sponsor here).

This has probably already been played, but how about:

"The C Network - CBS without the B S" (although I can see the CBS bigwigs taking offense of that).

They could always call it something along the lines of "IC" (but that would be too close to the so-called "i" network and would leave out Warner Bros.' role in the network).

I can see it now: The Winter Music Conference and WMC-TV/Memphis going to court over the WMC title(But then again, CBS does own WMC-AM & FM/Memphis). Can you say "Judge Judy"?

CW= the COUNTRY and WESTERN network. 'Nuff said.

I didn't know Spike Lee was a basketball player.

As I said at the time, Spike Jones and Fonzie's
nephew Spike had more enduring significance!
