Actually WKLS started out as a beautiful music station. Don Kennedy ran it..studios, xmitter and antenna atop Black Jack Mountain in Marietta.
WBIE (the FM101.5) was also a beautiful music station.
That would be scary if WKXI/WQXI-FM (94.1), WPCH, WKLS, WSB-FM, WLTA, and WBIE were all BM at the same time. And then add WGKA-FM (92.9) to WABE playing classical. Not sure if the timelines would all match up but that's a lot of soft instrumentals on the FM dial at one time if they did. No wonder a lot of people speak of the pre-96 Rock WPLO-FM in such reverent tones...it being the lone exception to BM/classical on FM (they were AOR before they were country, which is what they were before the V-103 flip).

Of course, most people at the time were getting their top 40 from the AM dial--WSB-AM, Quixie, not to mention WFOM, et al.

Quxie In Dixie (WQXI) was a great station!

It was, but the signal at the time was horrific at night. It of course was also the inspiration for the show WKRP in Cincinnati.

Pat Hughes, with his slicked-back slightly-greased hair was aft DJ on QXI (mid '60's). When Paul Drew took over at 7pm, he would take a can of Lysol, spray it on the headphones and wipe them down.

(I don't think he had to do that at CKLW! :D)

Yes-RIP. 404int.com says "Passed away in 1969, reportedly from diabetes." He was one of the best and helped keep quixie on top throughout the sixties.
