What exactly IS the criteria for jocks to be "worth anything" in today's radio? In sales, if we exceed our goals, then we are successful. What about jocks?
For as long as I can remember its been Arbitron ratings. Sure...one book is a crap shoot considering how poor a job Arbitron does in measuring the audience here (1200 questionable diaries for 250,000 people). How about two, three or four ratings books? Trends over a year or two?
They're down to just one full time jock each...I think that's a shame. Bad for all radio...
Here's the issue. As bad as talent may be in smaller markets, sales is just as bad, if not worse. If you have a halfway decent product ratings wise, or word of mouth-wise (or they've been around long enough), the station can charge a decent rate and a good sales force should be able to sell it.
But this market, and many like it, is rife with salespeople who get their leads by listening to the competing stations and trying to harass the business that just made a purchase on the competing station. That's actually the worst time to try to get a buy...they just spent money!
And, many salespeople don't even listen to their own station, so they don't know their product. You can't sell successfully if you don't know and believe in your product.
In their defense, virtually all live jocks in this market, and probably most markets, are micromanaged to the point where there is very little personality. Owners/GM's, etc. decided that personality radio is bad and people just want their music. I believe this is because of iPods, which is totally stupid. If someone wants to listen to their own mix, they are going to listen to their iPod and you can't stop them. So why do you want to try to mimic what they have? The best way to compete is to have a USP (unique selling proposition). A USP for a radio station isn't the music when there are competing formats in the market; it's the personality they can put on the air, e.g. jocks, voice person, liners/postioners, live broadcasts, prizes, etc.
People have always identified with people. They like their jocks to have personality. Of course they like their music, too, but anyone can just go to Pandora.com or use their iPod if music was the only thing they wanted.
And if the above is not enough, to continue with the liner jock/iPod mentality, the advent of automation and voice tracking is what's allowing for fewer full-time jocks.
