Atlantic Broadcasting did it again!

I'd hate to think that "What I Heard" is correct but the powers at Atlantic Broadcadting have fired The Dave & Jerry Morning Show on Kool 98.3 because they've run out of money. That sounds alot like what "What I Heard" said would happen and that's very sad to see he's right. More out of work radio people, what a great business we all work or maybe try to in.

It's really great to know the ignorance in what you think of JVC when in reality, the man responsible for bringing down the company was the hero. And if you think JSE is gonna return, then I hope for G-Rock or DOX to return as well ;D

Wild 102.7 is gaining popularity in AC in its first month! They hosted a party last night at the Borgata, it was packed. One of the food vendors along the boardwalk was blasting Wild 102.7. They're not going anywhere.

Let's not forget the winners who attended the Promo Only Summer Sessions party, in which I did meet a few of the handful of winners.

There were a ton of Z889 listeners who won as well there

Thats great the WILd 102.7 management (JC PH) thinks people came out to the Borgata to party because of them. Just like the 3 people that said they got WILD to get into the casbah on a friday night. Cant believe people didnt pile in to spin the prize wheel for a T Shirt theyll never wear. Wheres Vic ? Maybe he can help on washed up club DJ night. Sorry guys no one cares. Hope you charged a cover. I hear numbers arent near what they were last year. You still waiting for those money bags ? Maybe less strip club remotes and more sales meetings. tick tick tick tick tick tick tick

The party at the Borgata was only for DJ Expo attendees and the few lucky Wild 102.7 listeners (and also the high rollers staying at the Borgata)

Oy. Does every thread having to do with Atlantic have to devolve into a pissing match about Wild? For heavens sake...they were paying a morning team less than what a full time cashier makes at Foodtown. Or have we just come to expect that the "new norm" for talent pay is that bad...or is Jersey radio terrible in particular?

Reading stories like that reminds me why I tell people to do something else fulltime, and just play radio on the weekends if you really want to. No future in this business, sadly.

I am confident if that morning show was worth anything, the management team or company would have done whatever to keep them paid and happy. If they had no money, how do they afford all full timers on Wild? I think this is a classic case of a whack, washed up am show trying to gain sympathy. That's just 'What i Heard'

By the way $7,500 for each of those guys. After listening to their voicetracks, you guys that were fired are right, PH,JC have no clue... I would have fired them first.

What is Vic Latino's deal in this anyway, wouldn't a company that has market 1 talent utilize them, at least during the launch phases? I know a ton of people in South Jersey that remember listening to Vic Latino on WKTU.

From what I recall, the mess at Atlantic Broadcasting started in the beginning of this year.  From what I recall, JVC came to the picture THREE MONTHS after the disaster with Brett Denafo.  And from what I recall, Atlantic was taking the responsibilities ONCE they purchased from Access 1, which was years ago.  So you mean to tell me that because of a morning show staff being fired at WTKU that it was Wild and JVC's fault?  If it was anyone's fault, it was the fraud that got Brett thrown out of his GM position and made the clients feel that Atlantic Broadcasting is a bad business and dont feel trusted to work with them. I do know that John & Vic are doing their damnest to clean up the mess Atlantic is in.

What exactly IS the criteria for jocks to be "worth anything" in today's radio? In sales, if we exceed our goals, then we are successful. What about jocks?

For as long as I can remember its been Arbitron ratings. Sure...one book is a crap shoot considering how poor a job Arbitron does in measuring the audience here (1200 questionable diaries for 250,000 people). How about two, three or four ratings books? Trends over a year or two?

Dave & Jerry show on KOOL did a 4.5 share in their demo this spring, good for 5th in the metro. And on a Class A freq that only covers about half of the homes in the market with a one mlvt signal. In Cape May County, where KOOL's signal is equal to the 50k guys, they were #2 12+ and #1 in their demo. In the four books since their return, taking over a show with a 1.9 share they have gone up in each of the four ratings periods. And on a station that we all know from reading posts here has suffered a complete managerial shakedown and is on a very limited budget. I think these guys did their jobs, especially considering the working conditions and what they were paid.

If not Arbitron ratings, then what criteria do we use that is not completely subjective and based on a particular individual's personal taste?

Looks to me like Atlantic is gambling on WILD to save the financial day. They have taken money used for jocks on KOOL and the Shark to pump up WILD with live talent. The station sounds great, but will it attract advertisers? What will they do that Gary didn't do with the BUZZ to bring in revenue?

Will it pay off for Atlantic? Maybe/maybe not. JC didn't get to where he is today on his good looks. He's a bright guy, and he's got some bright guys on his NY team. But, it is by no means a slam dunk. Do they have enough financial backing to get them through the winter till next spring, when radio stations make money here at the shore? Can sales reverse their recent losses? Lots of questions here.

Atlantic has a long road before they start making money in AC. In the meantime, get used to computer driven liners on KOOL and the Shark. They're down to just one full time jock each...Jackson T and Sean Patrick, respectively.

I think that's a shame. Bad for all radio...

Here's the issue. As bad as talent may be in smaller markets, sales is just as bad, if not worse. If you have a halfway decent product ratings wise, or word of mouth-wise (or they've been around long enough), the station can charge a decent rate and a good sales force should be able to sell it.

But this market, and many like it, is rife with salespeople who get their leads by listening to the competing stations and trying to harass the business that just made a purchase on the competing station. That's actually the worst time to try to get a buy...they just spent money!

And, many salespeople don't even listen to their own station, so they don't know their product. You can't sell successfully if you don't know and believe in your product.

In their defense, virtually all live jocks in this market, and probably most markets, are micromanaged to the point where there is very little personality. Owners/GM's, etc. decided that personality radio is bad and people just want their music. I believe this is because of iPods, which is totally stupid. If someone wants to listen to their own mix, they are going to listen to their iPod and you can't stop them. So why do you want to try to mimic what they have? The best way to compete is to have a USP (unique selling proposition). A USP for a radio station isn't the music when there are competing formats in the market; it's the personality they can put on the air, e.g. jocks, voice person, liners/postioners, live broadcasts, prizes, etc.

People have always identified with people. They like their jocks to have personality. Of course they like their music, too, but anyone can just go to Pandora.com or use their iPod if music was the only thing they wanted.

And if the above is not enough, to continue with the liner jock/iPod mentality, the advent of automation and voice tracking is what's allowing for fewer full-time jocks.
