ATWT Cancelled?!?!?!

Does this mean that The Bold And The Beautiful will extend to an hour or will the As The World Turns timeslot go back to the affiliates?

Better still, how is Let's Make A Deal doing in the old Guiding Light slot? Maybe another game show in the works if LMAD is doing well. Password or another Pyramid perhaps?

It hasn't been even 3 months since Guiding Light's finale....

Hopefully Helen Wagner (Nancy) will be included in the finale--preferably be the subject of the final scene (just as her words were the first in the first scene).

Another soap loss for Brooklyn. One Life to Live, the last NYC soap?? This leaves just 1 Irna Phillips-created/collaborated show remaining. Never did I think I'd see either of those happening anytime soon.

Also, this sure is a LONG lead time between cancellation and finale. Too bad Another World didn't get the same treatment.

In my opinion, I predict that CBS affils would get the whole hour to themselves at 12 Noon, move Y&R to 1PM ET, and expand B&B and move that to 2PM ET.

Noneoftheless, the cancellation of "As The World Turns" means the end of P&G's longtime involvement in soaps.

Perhaps to give stations ample opportunity to purchase syndicated product to fill the time-slot.

I guess that means we should start a campaign to no longer have the soaps referred to as "the soaps"!

"Noneoftheless..." Great word.

How long does OLTL last over at ABC, which will now be producing 50% of all the television programs formerly known as soap operas?

Certainly, ABC has the synergy with SoapNet, to help justify the costs of producing soaps, but I fully expect to see OLTL receive the same fate as ATWT at some point in 2010. I think the writing was on the wall when it was announced that AMC was moving to Los Angeles, and would be broadcast in HD, with no similar announcement for OLTL.

Interesting. When CBS announced on April Fool's Day
that "GL" was being canceled, it gave "ATWT" a reprieve;
the common thinking was that "ATWT" would have its
last broadcast September 17, 2010. It's also interesting
that "ATWT" is averaging a 1.7 rating, whereas "GL" was
averaging 1.4 (although the numbers did jump slightly during
its last week) and is just a shade behind "OLTL."

Does this mean that the networks just start eliminating the
last-place soap like some sort of sports tournament? If that's
the case even the once-mighty "General Hospital" may end up
shutting its doors in the not-too-distant future. Seriously:

I can see ABC standing pat with "AMC" since it's in the top four
along with the two Bell shows and "Days Of Our Lives," but am
not putting any bets on the future of "OLTL" or "GH."

CBS has been trying for about two decades to sever its ties with
P&G; the network would prefer that P&G buy spots rather than
package entire shows where they get four minutes of commercials
and CBS gets eight; CBS, naturally, wants the whole twelve. Funny,
though, how it was seven years (1975-82) between CBS's cancellations
of "Edge Of Night" and "Search For Tomorrow," then 27 years after that
before "GL" was canceled, and now the last two P&G soaps get canceled
in the same year! Any thoughts on that?

Did CBS announce when the last episode of "ATWT" would be?

CBS and Proctor&Gamble: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year As The World Turns! PS You're being cancelled. :-\

As Eileen Fulton was quoted by the AP this morning: "It's a hell of a Christmas present."

Fulton also said it would be her 50th year on ATWT, and she was hoping that her 'Lisa' character would go down the aisle once more (that would be her 10th marriage) before anything happened to the show.

Let the game show fan kingdom begin panting for "Pyramid" to get the slot (note: I'm not saying I think that's what will or won't happen). The option of moving Y&R to 1 p.m. in the east is a mixed one at best--it's a way to balance expanding B&B IF that's still of interest while giving time back to the affiliates to appease them. Or you just call it a day and give the hour back to the stations, and those with LMAD at 3 eastern can shift it to 2, and take the 3 pm hour back. Lots of scenarios that could play out.

I watched this a few times. I remember the names John Dixon and Barbara Ryan.

And if I'm not mistaken, I saw Meg Ryan as a teenager. She's now one of my favorite movie actresses.

Currently John isn't on but Barbara still is. Yes, Meg Ryan was on in the early-mid 1980s as 'Betsy Stewart' (a clip of 'Betsy' and 'Steve's wedding is here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPk6xTBjePA , starting at 2:28).

Somehow my instincts tell me it will be a block of games from 2 to 4 Eastern. I've never heard of any desire on the part of the B&B cast to go to an hour, and CBS certainly isn't going to launch another soap at 2. Of course, some of you (and I think you're one of them, if you live in Pennsylvania) are already getting LMAD in the morning; down here in Carolina, I think our CBS affiliates would take a two-hour afternoon block of games; WFMY, which tries to be as "family friendly" as possible, would certainly take a game over a talk show (the only one it has is Ellen).
And while I wouldn't venture to say that "Pyramid" will or won't be "ATWT"'s replacement either, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility to make it so, since it was passed over as "GL"'s replacement and might now get a second chance.

I guess we can all begin speculating.

Here's how I think the ABC scenario plays out should OLTL get the axe: General Hospital moves to 2/1; meantime, ABC can start looking for the next Oprah (good luck!) for its o&os at 3, then I see a number of ABC affiliates starting their news at 4. I've already speculated on the Atlanta board that WSB will add a third hour of news when Oprah goes. That's in the East; in the earlier time zones there may be an extra hour of syndicated programs but I can still envision 4 PM newscasts (Los Angeles and Denver already do it).
