Audacy On SiriusXM

Interesting story as Audacy licenses access to some local news & sports stations to SiriusXM. According to the article, Sirius will pay Audacy a license fee, and will get to sell advertising when users tune in (sounds like a pre-roll). Some may remember that at one time, a number of Clear Channel radio stations were available on Sirius, including KIIS and WHTZ.

Audacy is licensing the rights to 42 stations to the satellite radio platform, including WIP in Philadelphia and The Score in Chicago.

This makes me wonder if they've simply run out of ideas at SiriusXM.

These stations are encoded for Nielsen PPM. These signals should be detectable by Nielsen. So I expect they will add to the SLR for each station.
 
Interesting that KMOX is included in the SiriusXM press release as one of the Audacy stations joining the SiriusXM lineup later this year. With the sale of Audacy's St Louis cluster (including KMOX), I wonder if that will really happen.

Also, if SXM wants to license content from other broadcasters, I wish they'd bring back BBC Radio 1.

Only eight stations will be available on all SiriusXM receivers: WFAN New York, WSCR Chicago, KRLD-FM Dallas, KGMZ San Francisco, WIP Philadelphia, WEEI Boston, WXYT-FM Detroit, KDKA-FM Pittsburgh, and WKRK-FM Cleveland. The remainder of the Sports and News/Talk will be on the 360L and app.

Run out of ideas? This now makes SiriusXM able to sell and market national AND local sports talk in one suite. They want to keep listeners in their infrastructure and gives them more to sell.

I wouldn't be shocked based on what I'm hearing if some Audacy music personalities end up on SiriusXM music channels or some SiriusXM specialty shows end up on Audacy stations.

I was thinking about that when I saw this story. It would save them a lot of production expense. They had been very possessive about that in the past. They felt their biggest selling point was exclusive content. The previous CEO was very anti-broadcasting and always spoke of broadcasting as his competition. In fact he held up the passage of the music modernization act because he insisted on including the music royalty on AM/FM radio. A lot of things have changed.

When you say "specialty shows on Audacy stations," might that include Howard Stern?
 
Hearkening back to the old days when KIIS, WLW, Z100 etc. used to simulcast on XM.

I wonder how the sports play-by-play will work. When WLW was on XM 173 they blacked out the Reds and Bengals games so I assume it'll be like that.
 
Interesting story. I'm assuming that there are more limitations on channel availability on Sirius than on the Internet. If that is true, I wonder which current Sirius channels will be discontinued to make room for the new entries.

They may just move more SiriusXM channels to the app to free up bandwidth for the Audacy stations.
 
What will happen to all the syndicated programming and infomercials many news/talk stations run, especially overnight and weekends? Will they all air on SXM or will a low-bitrate apology loop run in their place until original programming returns?

Also will all the play by play that the sports stations carry be blacked out on the station feed since most of them are already available via SiriusXM?
