Audacy

History. With 97.1 they're clearly trying to find something that reaches younger demos. They haven't hit on the right formula, but clearly that's the goal for this station. They already have four top rated stations that appeal to 25-54. They need something that competes with KIIS.

For KROQ, the company just hired several new programmers to oversee alternative stations. They're not going to spend money to hire people, and then blow the station up.
What's the 4th? I'm only counting KCBS-FM, KRTH, and KTWV. KNX is just outside the top 10 6+, but I would suspect most of the audience is 55 and over.

None. I was just replying to your point that they had 4 stations that appealed to 25-54, when they only have 3. 3 is still a lot, though, and I agree that Audacy won't (and shouldn't) flip KNOU and KROQ-FM. It seems there already adjustments being made at the latter, so we will see how those work out for the station.

May be KROQ should go classic rock... KROQ began as a top 40 station on 1500 AM in Sept 1972. KPPC 106.7 was AOR, changed calls to KROQ-FM and the rest is history. Remember A-O-R originally meant: Album Oriented Rock, it morphed into Adult Oriented Rock, and today it means All Old Records, and after all Classic Rock is just all old records!

That wasn't my point.

They already have two other "classic" stations: KRTH and KCBS.
Technically, KRTH and KCBS-FM are "Classic Hits". Not really classic rock. KGB-FM San Diego is Classic Rock, KTYD in Santa Barbara is Classic Rock. Those two stations are significantly different from each other but are still Classic Rock. LA currently has no station like either of those. KLOS is not Classic Rock.

Actually KCBS is either Adult Hits or Variety Hits, and in that way it plays a lot of classic rock.

But the point is they don't need any more classic oriented stations. They're already reaching that audience.

That depends on what audience you're talking about...KTYD certainly plays well known rock tunes from the 70's and 80's and beyond but they also play less familiar deep tracks from various albums.

I think KROQ will rebound. But i also think they should go in a more classic direction

If it was me I would go with a music intensive morning show. It's been working with Kearth and KTWV. Its doesnt take a genius to figure out what should be done with KROQ

Not that this will actually happen, but LA doesn’t have an all-sports station on FM. Any chance that ever happens? Some of the local teams are on signal impaired AM stations. Seems like every team is on a different station so if someone wanted to consolidate the teams on one massive FM sports station, that could be successful!

In some cases the teams have an ownership stake in the station. KLAA is partly owned by the LA Angels. Given that LA has two teams for every sport, it would be hard to get all of those teams on one station. The one company that has a vested interest in sports, Disney/ESPN, owns two AM stations.

ICYMI: Audacy dropped the "2 Minute Promise" on their alternative stations as they plan to slightly increase spot loads.

I think this is a positive move as much of the stations' imaging and marketing was centered around "not playing more than 2 minutes of commercials at a time." I will say this will likely improve the quality of the morning show, as it always sounds like they are rushed to get to break. It will also allow the music to sit a little longer with listeners before interrupting to a break. It also looks like they are re-adding some of the '90s alternative titles they had dropped last year.

KTWV is aging out. It is now pure 45 and older.

Well, WINS, WCBS, and WFAN are among the top billers in the entire country, so Audacy NYC has that going for them..
But all three of those are enormously expensive, but still among the only viable formats for AM or an AM/FM combo.
