August 2024 Bay Area Radio PPM Ratings

If you look at the last six months, KYLD has picked up a point, while KMVQ has lost almost a full point. Not sure what you see as the problem.

In 18-34, KYLD moved from #7 to #5 "with it's largest share in over a year" according to Research Director. Also up to #5 in 18-49. All good.
Ok, you have a point there. The numbers did throw me off.

Meanwhile, KMVQ-HD2 (Pulse 99.7) and KIQI-HD2 (Pride) seem to be holding their own with the Dance crowd. Guess the genre is luring fans to HD and can expect this to continue.

Still scratching my head about KYLD and KRBQ. Both stations need to do something, just saying.

Why would one of the top stations in the market “need to do something”

5th in every breakdown. I’d love a format change for KRBQ but if it’s working, it’s working. Lance hinted there was something going on at KRBQ a few months ago but they clearly opted not to from at change, instead changing around staff and the playlist.

Especially if you look at it as one part of a portfolio. The only way the owner is going to "do something" is if there's a long-term trend that ends up dragging down the cluster as a whole.

This breathless anticipation of month-to-month reports is just crazy. I'm willing to venture that the powers that be simply mark the data point on a chart and then only when the slope of the line is consistently negative do they have much reason to tweak or make major changes.

Oh, behold the mighty Dance Crowd, the saviour of...HD????

I notice that the ratings sheet has been reformatted. Its okay, but I prefer the previous version.
If I understand you correctly, Mike, what you're commenting on is that Henry is now linking to the ratings list from RadioInsight instead of RadioOnline. Lance Venta owns both RadioInsight and RadioDiscussions, and has been trying to get Henry to use the RI listings instead of the third party RO one. That's understandable -- for one thing, RI is a bit interactive and contains more data whereas RO's is a static list -- and Henry finally seems to be listening.

He might also be referring to the changes in RI and how it displays ratings.

I heavily prefer the new layout, Lance updated RI between this and the last ratings, mostly changing formatting and how things in the table are laid out.

I don't have the old listing to compare it to, but from memory it looks like the same layout, only with the date range above each month's share column. It's still 6 months of date, the station calls, the station slogan, the format, owner and cume. Was any of that info not in previous months' listings? I honestly can't recall.

I think that Classic Hits 103.7 should be the one that goes Christmas. Their numbers are always bad when the holidays come around.

Part of the reason that it is rarely the Classic Hits station in a market that goes all-Christmas is that you pretty much have to include a bunch of "expected" older songs like der Bingle's "White Christmas", José Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad", and the Chipmunks. When your main positioning statement is 70s-80s-90s there's a hesitation to do that, even when you know as a programmer it's right.

The other problem for CH is that the bulk of Christmas music is AC, at best. Yes, there are some that aren't. but you can't put Hall & Oates "Jingle Bell Rock, Springsteen's two songs, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and the U2 cover of that Darlene Love song on a loop and play it over and over.

The only way I see iHeart doing that on KOSF is if they are ready to flip 103.7 after the holidays. After the recent rebranding, I think that's very unlikely.

I could say the same thing about Smooth Jazz and K-Pop too, but that’s my opinion.

Thing is, no niche format is going to do much on an HD-2 channel without a translator to go along with it, and there are precious few of those in the Bay Area, especially in the commercial part of the FM band.

And, of course, the next question is, why would they do that? There seems no pressing issue regarding the station’s performance or its contributions to the cluster’s performance.

Mark, Mark, Mark ... you know that will never completely go away. It would become "how much did KXXX contribute to the cluster's downturn of 0.3 points?"

Yeah, I know. But I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to the real-life KXXX, innocently broadcasting to western Kansas and eastern Colorado, for inadvertently bringing it into this somewhat impactless discussion.
