What we're seeing now is how for some stations, cume drives AQH (which is the most important stat for sales) and for others, a middling cume can be compensated for if yout TSL is strong.
However, even a high TSL can only help so much if the cume is falling. That's what's happening now with all the big signal talk stations in town. WABC may be as low as it's been in the post-World War II period, while WOR is similarly anemic. What will fix them? The theories are numerous but they all center aroound a major programming makeover, especially in the post-10 AM dayparts.
Will they do it? Cumulus probably won't want to spend the money to do it. Clear Channel is probably less interested in winning New York than in making sure its signature national shows are all carried there again, including shows that previously failed there (Glenn Beck) or are past their prime (Rush Limbaugh)....NYC carriage boosts the national ad rates and helps amortize those hefty contracts.
