August PPM Discussion Thread

I realize it might be hard since this website no longer houses ratings information... but here's a piece from the Daily News with the top fifteen stations. And note WRXP's ratings nearly increased threefold - and likely caused a one-point drop for Q104.3.

New Rock 101.9's success so far can be attributed to the programming. This is the first time NYC has had a true alternative station.

Do you think WLTW will change it's playlist to try and evade WBLS?

No. Same general age target, different constituencies.

Among stations that share WLTW cume, WBLS is not even in the top 10. WBLS grew because its main competitor went away, not because it is taking listeners from WLTW.

Trying to please WBLS listeners more would likely just displease another segment of the WLTW listenership, and result in no gain or a loss.

You do have to think that Clear Channel might be worried about WBLS being a new challenger to WLTW's #1 spot. That's why they put Urban on 105.1 in the first place. This begs the question of whether Hot 97's ratings would still be up there with WLTW and WBLS if they were the only game in town. Would it be worthwhile for 105.1 to flip to Urban AC? Or even for them to tweak to a sort of Urban Hot AC format (kind of like how WBLS used to be) in order to draw away listeners from both WQHT and WBLS?

Since rates are based on audience delivery (cost per point) rather than rank, this is not such a big deal.

While agencies only buy the top stations in a demo target, they don't buy one of the top stations just because it is #1... it's because it is competitive on pricing.

I think the Hot 97 issue was more in defense of Z-100, not WLTW, in any case. Z-100 only bills a coupla' percent less than WLTW, so defending it is just as important. Further, the Hot 97 issue was pretty much an 18-34 concern.... and 18-34 is not the WLTW core.

David,

You wrote on the other radio board:"Why would an Hispanic company with no African American operating experience want to change a 2 share Hispanic format for a 2 share Urban AC format?"

Didn't WRKS get a 4.0 share against WBLS' low 3s during Kiss' last month?

I'm guessing that, while WBLS would continue to get over a 4 share, a new competitor run by folks less familiar with the format and the target group would get around a 2. They already have a 2, so there would be no audience gain and their lack of experience selling the format would make things just a lot worse.

The gains 101.9 made in one month are rather impressive, usually it takes a few months for the word to completely spread around town.
I have a feeling that by the end of the year, New Rock should be anywhere between 2.5 to 3.0 overall.

Regarding WBLS:
Though it is now an impressive #2 in the overall ratings, its cume is only #13 on the list.
Does that indicate that they have extremely loyal listeners that tend to keep their radios locked on the station for relatively long periods of time?

It does not mean that the listeners are loyal... it just means that they listen more than the average for most stations. The typical listener in the PPM panel uses about 6 stations in the course of a week, with some getting more time than others.

What we're seeing now is how for some stations, cume drives AQH (which is the most important stat for sales) and for others, a middling cume can be compensated for if yout TSL is strong.

However, even a high TSL can only help so much if the cume is falling. That's what's happening now with all the big signal talk stations in town. WABC may be as low as it's been in the post-World War II period, while WOR is similarly anemic. What will fix them? The theories are numerous but they all center aroound a major programming makeover, especially in the post-10 AM dayparts.

Will they do it? Cumulus probably won't want to spend the money to do it. Clear Channel is probably less interested in winning New York than in making sure its signature national shows are all carried there again, including shows that previously failed there (Glenn Beck) or are past their prime (Rush Limbaugh)....NYC carriage boosts the national ad rates and helps amortize those hefty contracts.
