Austin’s 95.9 flips to Country

I'm a little surprised iHeart didn't jump on this and flip one of their underperforming translators to a country flank position to prevent anyone else from getting any ideas.

Regardless, 95.9 isn't a very good signal and the areas it does cover well are not where classic Texas country will perform particularly well. It might jump at first, but I think in 6-12 months it will likely do worse than Hot was doing ratings wise.

iHeart already has two Country stations in the market (Mainstream KASE and gold-based KVET), there is absolutely no reason for them to sign on a third.

Bob Cole said they are not going anywhere a while back I heard.

You’re never “going anywhere” until ownership decides differently, so I would take that with a Morton’s box full of salt. Norsan doesn’t do Country formats.

(Every time I type “Norsan” I have to battle autocorrect as it wants to change it to “Norman” or “NorSan”.)

I'm not arguing with that take. KVET isn't totally gold-based though and there probably is a sliver of room for another country option in the market, which KOKE-FM currently has and which Audacy obviously thinks might be up for grabs soon.

It doesn't really matter though. KOKE-FM with much better coverage than 95.9 and a big, local name really didn't move the needly much and neither will this.

I tend to agree that 95.9 isn't going to do well with a KOKE-style format. Having said that, selling that with the rest of the Audacy cluster might prove easier than selling Hot 95.9.

I'm a believer in streaming in general, but come on.... that's some pretty epic spin.

You must have cut off the last part of that release, @jras20. It will be along the lines of within a calendar year (18 months if we're really and truly gluttons for punishment) we will quietly ride off into the sunset by shuttering the digital platform, once we realize that this idea is not sustainable, either, due to lack of financial support, steep decline in listenership, etc. etc. etc.

I'm afraid it's the death knell for Genuine Austin Radio.

KRTY San Jose seems to be pulling it off, but I mostly agree with you. Making that work is going to require a Herculean marketing effort and a loyal listener base. I'm not convinced KOKE and the Horn are nearly as well-equipped as KRTY was.

They need to put more bass on 95.9 sounds so flat.
