AUSTIN ARBITRON DECEMBER PPM

KVET-FM keeps trending down; recent changes could be hurting them. Christmas music did well for KKMJ, as it usually does.

I can't help but wonder how long the owners of "The Horn" will stay with their heavy dose of local sports talk. While it's one of my favorite stations, I wonder how that 1.0 is paying the bills.

As for KVET-FM, well, now that it's just one more country station, who cares?

Remember the Horn was paying the bills when it was AM-only. They apparently have good salespeople, move product for the sponsors... or both.

Indeed yes, Fred...but all the good local programming went to the FM side and the AM was left with the national ESPN feed. Well, whatever, as long as the bills are paid ;D.

Some of the stuff KVET did is sounding OK, but the morning show needs to be back the way it was.

I hope they keep the horn on 104.9, maybe simulcast it over on 1530.

The Horn is actually pretty decent. Lots of local and is often interesting. According to that old article with Bob Pride, it's also the one making the bucks.

I wish they would move The Horn to 98.9. The Big Talker is going nowhere fast.

They will probably announce the return of Shannon Burke any day now.

It will be there for awhile. In order to keep the affiliation with ESPN, Simmons (now part of Border) had to clear their programming. That's why 1530 is all ESPN network stuff and 1260 is Deportes. The "merger" with Border really bailed them out because were going to have to lose some local programming to accomodate ESPN's demands until 104.9 came along.

I think the big story here is how KUT, an NPR station that also plays a lot of Adult Alternative music, managed to hit #1, now that Austin is using People Meters to get its ratings. I don't think there's another market in the country where an NPR station, or an Adult Alternative station, are at #1. In San Francisco, their NPR station is #3, but KQED-FM is mostly news and talk programming.

It's interesting how Country has tumbled. It wasn't long ago that KASE was #1 with double digits and KVET-FM was #2. It's also interesting to see how little Austin seems to like sports. The top sports station, 1300 KVET, a Fox Sports affiliate, is only ranked at #20. The two ESPN outlets, 104.9 and 1530, trail KVET. However Austim may be the best market for Adult Hits with 103.5 Bob-FM ranked #5.

And why is KXBT still trying to be the market's #2 conservative talk station? It isn't working. Tom Delay complained that he got convicted because he had to face an Austin jury and Austin is the most liberal city in America. Well, let's put that to a test and try running liberal talk shows like Stephanie Miller and Thom Hartmann on the station, along with non-political but popular talk shows like Dr. Joy Brown and Clark Howard. (I guess Dave Ramsey, who is already on the station, could stay.)

While Rock stations are helped usually when a market moves to People Meters, that isn't true in Austin. KLBJ-FM barely makes the Top 10, KROX is well out of the Top 10 and KGSR is nowhere. Who at Emmis had the great idea to put KGSR on the strongest signal in the market and replace it at 107.1 with Regional Mexican KLZT? Even with the inferior signal, KLZT is in the Top 10, while KGSR is one of Austin's lowest rated local FM stations.

And why is KGSR still trying to be an Adult Alternative station when A) KUT fills that need and B) there's no Classic Rock station in the market? Why not get rid of the unfamiliar songs and just play the familiar hit rock songs from the Beatles through the 80s?

You bring up some good points - especially about the talkers, however you need to remember the numbers posted are just 12+, and when you break out tops in the 25-54 money demo things look much different with:

KASE, KBPA, KLBJAM, KLBJFM, KKMJ Or KHFI almost always in top 5 with KASE & KBPA bouncing between #1 & #2.

No question KUT is a powerhouse, but it skews older and its lowest ranked dayparts are when it plays music.

The Horn, despite its low ratings, bills the most in Border Media's Austin cluster, so don't look for too many changes there ... at least any time soon. I'd expect the Big Talker to be the next flip in the market. FWIW, Dave Ramsey is the station's top-rated show ... not that that means it's doing huge numbers.

To your points....

1) As far as I remember, KUT has always been rated high. Nobody really paid attention to it because of the non-com status and the fact that most ratings charts didn't even list non-coms. Most programmers that I have talked to don't don't even pay attention to it. Don't know whether this is good or bad (probably bad).

2) When you look at the talk side, KLBJ-AM has done really well in the last 10 years or so. I know they are taking a bit of a hit in the PPM age, but I think that will work itself out. For the most part, nobody has ever "seriously" attempted to take them on. The FM talkers have been lame attempts at best with low par satellite shows and almost no local presence. Those stations have existed mostly because they cost almost nothing to run so any money is gravy. In the sports talk arena, KVET exists and will continue to exist because of the Longhorn contract. They make money promotionally and through sales. Even when management royally f-d it up, they still made money because of UT. I hope that PD Madani will be able to eventually put some money back into that station and upgrade the talent and production and maybe even the promotions, but I am not holding my breath. The Horn is the only station that I can remember in a long time that really put some effort in the local talk scene. I just think that overall, Austin is not a sports market because of the lack of professional teams. Their future remains to be seen....

Holiday PPM numbers are out KUT slid to #2, behind Majic's non-stop Christmas tunes. Also ... La Que Buena slipped into the top 10.

December PPM is almost useless. Listening isnt normal patterns because of holiday. and many air talent take weeks off.

thats why its considered its own "holiday book".
