Austin March PPMs

When will KGSR flip? That station sucks.

I'm more interested in how much longer 98.9 "the Big Talker" has left. Someone needs to go straight-ahead against KHFI already (hint, hint, BMP/Simmons!)

It'd be a shame if the big talker goes. They got a LOT better talk show than KVET.

Huh? KVET is a sports station. KVET-FM is a county. What does that have to do with The Big Talker? I don't understand your point.

What's keeping the BMP stations in business? The cume and share for "The Big Talker" and "The Horn" are...ho ho horrendous! If you're an advertiser, why on earth would you spend a nickel on either one of these stations? Spend more. get...less than before?

BMP won't go CHR--too costly to operate, market, and "wait and see" here.

"Talk" (on 4 of their signals) is...CHEAP.

What would it take to buy these stations? $8mil? $10mil? They can't be worth much more...

Not to mention 'Big Talker' and 'Horn' had advertising all over town last year. Those stations and 'The Zone' should be embarrassed by not only their own dismal performance, but that they almost all got beaten by the KBPA Stream.

And why can't KFMK get a break? You can hardly turn on the TV without seeing a 'Spirit 105.9' commercial and they still have billboards all over town.

"The Horn"'s problem is obvious to anyone who's tried to listen to it north of 2222. This morning it was so bad that it was blown out on Spicewood Springs Rd. by a station on the same frequency. Yes, once again, a local station was blown off by FM skip.

Technically, the station is simply non-competitive. It was a waste of money and talent to launch it on this frequency. Until this is fixed, the talent (who I personally think are doing a good job) is simply missing more than half of the market.

As to the "Big Talker", well, I frankly don't think it has any programming that matters to Austin Texas.

And for KVET-FM, congrats to them on a slowly rising number. I personally don't like what has been done to the morning show, but apparently there are indeed folks who like old country.

I'm hearing that alot, too. They chased away a lot of morning listerners who are not country music fans. But apparently trhey're hitting more PPMs this way. I'm still wondering though if PPMs move merchandise for advertisers the way listeners did.

BMP needs to give up and sell to someone who is willing to spend some $$$. Looking at companies here already, Entercom could add a few frequencies in this market without hitting the ownership cap.

yeah, so KVET is doing everything "wrong"...

funny to see all of you guys that were hating on the new KVET.

shows how much you experts know

The Big talker's morning show is better than KVET-FM morning show since after they changed everything up on KVET.

The short answer: I think that's what some of us in the industry might call "not working."

The not-so-short answer: How are they billing? I don't listen to them, but are breaks heavy with local spots? The ratings may be a non-factor if they can pull good business based on word-of-mouth.

I'm new to the market, but from what I've observed, the suburbs—Round Rock, Bee Cave, et al—seem to be more religious than the city of Austin itself, and Spirit may be targetting areas where PPM devices aren't going.

The market that I'm from—Lafayette, LA—is a religious market with a low-rated commercial CCM station, a 100kw blowtorch that some would call a waste. This station (102.9 KAJN) survives because the businesses that advertise on KAJN are plentiful and fiercely loyal. Plus, the fact that it's a 100kw station that blankets and sells ads in two markets—Lafayette and Lake Charles—helps as well. K-Love came into the market about 5 years ago, soon followed by Air 1, and while KAJN's numbers have taken a hit, they still appear to be trucking along. (The pun there is that KAJN happens to be owned by a trucking and transport company.)

At any rate, KFMK is owned by Christa Ministries, so I doubt there will be any sweeping changes until new owners come in. And who knows, Christa might be patient enough to stick around to see if conditions/fortunes improve.

On a related note, I saw a 92.1 K-Love billboard on Lamar, near Airport. Aside from the bumper stickers I've seen that simply plug a frequency in front of the K-Love logo, I've never seen any sort of advertising from EMF. It's clear that they see a serious threat from Spirit.

I'm certainly no expert myself, but it seems to me that in today's marketplace, that's a perfect recipe for immediate failure? After all, doesn't (for better or worse) the PPM rule the numbers?
