KVET number 7 hmmm....
I can see why.
I don't even listen to them any more.

that is not saying much...

The facts are KVET finds itself the bottom FM in CC's Austin cluster, down in AQH and down in cume from last month. Where's the growth the recent changes were supposed to bring?

When the bottom FM in CC's cluster is beating every other non-CC music-based station in town except KUT (which is not always music based) and Bob, I would say there are bigger problems on that list to point and giggle at, unless you guys simply enjoy bagging on KVET, which you obviously do. Again, obvious sour grapes.

We enjoy ragging on KVET about as much as a parent enjoys ragging on a child who is making wrong choices. KVET is more than just a "music-based station" to us. It is family, and has been for generations. That's why we approach it differently.

You program to the PPMs and you get PPMS. But PPMs don't respond like listeners who have a personal connection with the station. Just look at the totals from the Radiothon. The new KVET brought in $311k this year. The old KVET brought in $469k last year. When people care about the station they support its causes and its advertisers. It's pretty simple. Care about us and we'll care back. Dismiss our concerns and we'll dismiss yours.

I couldn't have said it better myself, Fred. It's clear that the objective for the station is no longer to be in the top two or three (as it frequently was when we both worked there) and to be a station that listeners really connect to. The objective now is to just simply "beat every other non-CC music-based station."

I agree with both of you. Me being a radio fan, I listened to KVET all my life, riding to school, college, now work.
Now after the change I can't stand them any longer.

Radio has changed so much in the last 10 years, that its NEVER going to be the same.

KGSR, KVET, etc. Radio stations are simply used differently now. There also were far fewer radio stations 10-20 years ago. That were independently owned.

ITS NEVER GOING TO BE LIKE THE OLDEN DAYS. And it has nothing to do with anything local. Its the nature of the game.

You guys sound like old timers griping about free agency in sports. ITS NOT THE SAME GAME AS IT USED TO BE

Second and Third Geezer and Fred. Those who were part of the incredible success of KVET/KASE in the 80's and 90's have an emotional bond, and many of them stay in touch.
The fundamentals of radio still apply. Find an audience, join them and serve them. Success will follow. Despite the agency's '18-54' fixation, and despite the consultants advice that "If you are the Classic Country station anyone who likes classic country will listen to you no matter what you do or don't do", there are lessons to be learned from what happened under Mssr's Butler and Rogers. Additional channels, new delivery methods, revolutionary technology; all are simply conduits. The connection between the broadcaster and the listener is what's important, and always will be.
Vulture capitalists and pinche 'programmers' have changed the game, but the basic concept remains. Anyone who denies that is preparing for failure.

I couldn't have said it better. The past of KVET is the key to the future success of radio in this new "tech" age. Programmers and exectutives are trying to cut costs and turn radio stations into cookie cutter juke boxes. That's what everyone wants right? Just like their iPods? Well, the problem with that is that iPods are programmed by their owners, not by some guy wearing a suit in a high rise building somewhere. Eventually, the public will get tired of that and tune out. The only thing that will keep radio unique and relevant will be the very thing that is being pushed away: personalities and talk. I'm sorry, but I don't tune into radio for music to listen to because 90 percent of the time I don't like what they are playing or I don't know what it is they are playing and I can do better on satellite or iTunes or just about anything else. When I turn on radio, I am looking to be entertained or informed or even educated. I want news or sports scores or humor or talk about politics or occasionally music that is new and different or unique. That is the old KVET.

its not just the talk show on kvet that made me not listen any more its the station in general. the play list repeats more songs.

Its a shame 1300 is not doing better. I can't get the 104.9 signal in Georgetown,so I listen to ESPN on 106.9 out of Killeen. I like Bucky and Mandani together again, and I hope the ratings show a bump in the morning. Maybe they are loosing the 9am-12N segment with 1300 going with Dan Patrick while 104.9 has the more interesting Cowherd. Rome is on 12-3pm 1 hour delayed,so they should win that time slot too. IMO, the ratings probably fall of the map when the 3pm locals come on. IMO, its just bad sports radio with Craig Way and team.

Does KVET even still have a morning show? Every time I tune over to see its music or commercials.

Congrats to KHFI for number one! I bet some of that goes to the morning show, which is a good show I'm liking it more and more.

Kind of a funny note, KCTI Gonzales is using the old ID song people KVET use to use.

"Misterradio's" quote: " I want news or sports scores or humor or talk about politics or occasionally music that is new and different or unique. That is the old KVET."

A station that had a little news... a little sports... a little humor... a little political talk..with a LITTLE music (that was NEW, DIFFERENT or UNIQUE) - would be lucky to get a 1.0 share. And that would probably be people landing on it by accident.

That really is sad, but I won't deny that it may be true.

Personally, I've taken to listening to BBC2 online in the 6:00 a.m. hour. That is EXACTLY what they program (at 12:00 noon their time). Their morning show (just after midnight) has more music, but lots of jock talk, much like our stations in the late 70s and early 80s. It work there as IIRC that's the number one station in the UK.

No, this isn't the UK. I'm just glad that the style of radio I appreciate is still practiced....somewhere! ;D
