austin's ratings

It could get a few listeners from those who refuse to hit the AM button and don't know what KLBJ-AM has to offer. There are also those who might hear it by accident as they furiously tap the SEEK button looking for something different on FM. Right now they don't even know KLBJ-AM exists except for Ed Clement's appearances on the KLBJ-FM morning show.

I'll grant you your point, but KDHT got the translator to begin with because the tower for the full C on 93.3 was located in Bertram, Texas. And they had days that the signal was not listenable in Austin.

Fred Cantu....

KLBJ-AM does not have a problem getting listernes...

Tremendous call volume, Massive fund raising events lure thousands of people, and a data base that out performs any TV station in town.

Also, 590klbj.com has amazing streaming numbers from office listeners..

I never said it did. Someone posed the question of what KLBJ-AM could stand to gain by simulcasting on FM. Exposing a station to more potential listeners never hurts.

Yea, that was me (I think). The point is that KLBJ AM has a nighttime signal that's miserable where I live (Steck and MoPac) and let's face it, better fidelity never hurt any station. On top of that, it just seems that the Austin market is now large enough for an FM newstalker to make inroads. Even if the FM signal was slightly less than KLBJ's nighttime signal, I think it would still be an attractive alternative.

I agree! However, where on the FM dial?

I think KLBJ-AM could fall victim if anther group started an FM Hot Talk/News format. Partner with a TV for news...because, a local newsteam if very exspensive.

You're right, but no one ever will because to actually do that becasue to actually do it right you need to spend a lot of money. To be a good news talk station you need a fairly sizable staff and equipment for them all to use. Reporters, producers, on-air talent....it adds up pretty quickly. I can't imagine that any station that is not already a heritage news station would try it. Nobody has the balls to risk the money or to ride out the more than likely couple of years of losses before moving into the profit margin.

As for the nighttime signals, many AM stations are tightly restricted by the FCC and forced to lower their power and directionalize their signals at night. KLBJ-AM goes from a 1 tower 5000 watt daytime transmitter to a 4 tower 1000 watt trasmitter at night. The 4 towers create nulls in the signal that protect stations on the same frequency sometimes several states away. Think of the clear channel AM's (not the company but this is where they got the name) that are the only stations broadcasting on a certain frequency in the country and can be heard at night all over the country. This is the reverse of that basically.

I think one of the biggest things to note is the increasingly poor performance of the Clear Channel stations. KASE, a station that spent most of the 80's and 90's alone at number 1, has fallen all the way down to 5 and KVET which had been as high as 1 is down at 6. KFMK and KPEZ are well below what they have been and KVET-AM has been way underperforming. The only bright spot is KHFI which is probably equaling its best performance ever. With all the talk of cuts and layoffs coming at Clear Channel, I think I can point to the first person who SHOULD be let go....the operations manager Mac Daniels. Under his reign, KASE and KVET have taken a dive (he is also the program director of those 2 stations), he practically destroyed the Zone (KVET-AM) with his moronic personel moves, he is letting KFMK just sort of dangle there with no direction (yes it is supposed to be sold but this started long before that) and then there is KPEZ which was once a player in the market and now it is just one of several underperforming Christian pop stations (and they have spent some serious bucks trying to promote it). Again, the only bright spot is KHFI and he really doesn't touch it.

Clear Channel, if you have to cut somebody....I think you get my drift.
