Automated Radio Stations/Satellite Radio Stations

Okay, dumb question here: what is the incentive for listening to an infomercial on the radio? At least on TV, you have visuals to keep you interested (and watching!). But what is the appeal of radio infomercials?

My former station once received an affidavit from an infomercial advertiser. The advertiser had gotten no response from their infomercial, so they made one of several conclusions, and wanted the station to verify which one was right.

1. The infomercial didn't air.
2. It didn't air in its entirety.
3. It aired at a different time.
4. It DID air, but just no one responded to it.

Of course, #4 was the correct answer. I couldn't help but find that funny. But it was also kinda tragic, since our station puts out 50,000 watts! No one responded to an infomercial that could have potentially been heard in up to six states?
 
I get your drift--who's being scammed here?

It figures how dunderheaded and degraded things have gotten; not only are the stations running ad scams, the stations themselves are being scammed by their own advertisers...
 
fire...stations that don't have listeners shouldn't take money from advertisers. Stations that have listeners should lease their audience 60 seconds at a time. If it makes money for both, do it! But even stations with good listenership have drouts of response.
 
Hmmm, the rough sequence of events...

Okay, the station's got programming holes, esp. weekend and graveyard-shift stuff. And ad revenue is down, because advertisers aren't rotely "choosing" radio the way they used to.

So, along comes Fat Tony with an infomercial deal--presto, programming holes filled, ad problem solved.

Then, several months later, Fat Tony comes in, asking...where's the customers? Fat Tony is concerned, and when he's concerned, that can mean trouble...
