B101

Most listeners in Rhode Island whose favorite music station is 103.3 WODS probably don't care about B101's ratings. However it's hard to believe they get the ratings they do. The midday DJ is as boring as the music played all the time on the station. Repetitive classic hits, mostly rock hits, and the occasional soul or disco song. 103.3 WODS has much better production and music variety plus mostly in-studio DJs. The music is a great mix of late 60's to early 80's rock hits, pop, disco, and soul. Now with Christmas music on 103.3 WODS and listeners like me who won't listen to weeks of Christmas music, we look for another station with the closest format. Since only northwest RI can get 98.9 WORC and only southern RI can get 100.9 WKNL, the Providence area listeners are stuck with B101. I thought B101 would take advantage of those 103.3 WODS listeners looking for another station during the Christmas format, and widen its variety of music, but how could they do it, with that crappy voice tracked or syndicated programming they have? Did anyone think, with better DJs and variety on B101, those WODS listeners may stay with B101 after the Christmas season? I am glad I also like the local talk on 630 WPRO, and also the news on 1030 WBZ. On FM my favorite station is 103.3 WODS, but when they go Christmas I tune into almost any station except the ones that are modern rock or all Christmas. I rarely listen to B101.

If it were not for the Christmas format, most Rhode Islanders would also be able to rely on Cool 102, whose format has become quite similar to B101's. In addition, despite its recent decline, Cool is still mostly live and local.

B101 has accustomed its listeners to not care who's on the air after morning drive. It just doesn't matter. I've always wondered why CC doesn't at least use better personalities as their jocks-in-the-box instead of some of these deadpan announcers. That's Marc Coppola middays and he's been in radio for years but sounds tired and the kind of radio he's doing could be done by anyone with a clear speaking voice. On the other hand he would probably sound better live or at least tracking one station only and gearing his breaks to that station and market.

Most people outside morning drive don't even seem to be worth the money. Just a bunch of talking heads who think they sound interesting. If Radio could hire some kick ass people like they used to than that would be one thing. But from what I hear on music stations these days, I can see why stations are hesitant to spend any money. Put an ipod on shuffle and the ratings wouldn't be any worse.

I'm all for LOCAL if LOCAL doesn't sound like a pile of sh*t. Otherwise just automate the sucker and save yourself the money. Providence used to have a station back in the 90's called "The Edge" 99.7 on the dial. Not one single DJ was heard on the station for at least a month. It was great. They had a comment line where listeners could call in and leave messages. Then they were played on the air. People talked about how much they loved the station. Lots of them! Then they made the mistake of hiring DJ's and it all went downhill from there.

It's my opinion that a bad DJ or a mediocre DJ is worse than having no DJ at all. When I turn on my radio these days, 95 percent of the time all I hear are mediocre DJ's. That makes me want to change the station. Bottom line is that if you can't afford good interesting talent, than put your station on auto-pilot. It would be better that way.

John, DJs today are not allowed to be anything more than "mediocre." In the era of PPM, the dominant programming theory is that the less talk, the better the PPM ratings. Take a look at 'HJY, for instance. Outside of morning and afternoon drive, where there is still considerable personality, the midday and night jocks are barely "allowed" to talk about anything other than music- and artist-related topics. But I should not complain; 'HJY is the rare Clear Channel station that has a completely local slate of talent.

HJY has held together surprisingly well. Unfortunately this is the scary time of year for radio when stations start giving out pink slips left and right. Pretty soon HJY will have their day and everything over there will be ruined. It's only a matter of time.

No need for B101 to sound as blah as it does. There are plenty of Syndicated shows in all time time slots with a classic hits format.I'm sure It can sound alot better.I would have just kept Ed McMann on Middays if they wanted to voicetrack....

Charles could have done a good music show on HJY..I remember his show on Sunday (or was it SAturday?) nights on HJJ. Mix that with something other than the list of 30 songs HJY plays at random and I'd listen.

How do you explain WCBS-FM being tied for number one in New York then? They allow their jocks to talk even more than WODS, and there is more variety in the music. I think if B101 (and WSNE) were somehow able to be released for the grip of Clear Channel, they could be decent stations again.

Another great alternative to B101, especially during the Christmas format on 103.3 WODS.

88.1 WELH, now 4,000 watts in stereo (tower in Seekonk, MA), covers Providence, most of northern and central RI, and nearby southeast MA. Monday to Friday from 3pm to 9pm they play a great mix of classic hits, oldies, soul, and disco.

I'm listening to the web stream right now. The low buzz is peaceful. It sounds like what it would be like if you were small enough to sit inside the transmitter. If you crank up the volume all the way you can faintly hear a radio station that sounds like it's being broadcast from Mars.

That's because you've gone to the website for Brown Student Radio (or "BSR") and not WELH proper, which is http://www.welh.net

BSR only broadcasts on WELH from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. I understand that they may do streaming broadcasts online at additional times, however.

Oh.. well that puts a whole different paint job on things.

Brown Student Radio was one of the applicants for the 96.5 LPFM, but the FCC rejected them, yet let some foreign language religious operator get it. Go figure.

BSR is on from 9pm to 3am, 7 days a week. Monday to Friday, Latino Public Radio is on from 3am to 3pm. I would love to see the classic hits, oldies, soul (and disco) get more time.

For anyone in the New Bedford area, there is another 88.1 on the WJFD tower in Fairhaven running 300 watts (WFHL, Portuguese Religious) which will cut the reception of WELH. I think once past Fall River into Somerset, WELH starts mixing in.
