B98.5 Starting to sound... like an AC

1:27 Suddenly I See
1:20 Smooth
1:06 Give A Little Bit
12:57 It's Gonna Be Me
12:53 Tom's Diner
12:26 Since U Been Gone
12:19 Give Me One Reason - Tracy Chapman
12:09 Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)
11:51 Dreams
11:30 Unwell
11:18 Breathe
11:11 Smooth Criminal
11:07 Hanging By a Moment
10:53 I Swear
10:14 Faithfully
9:46 How To Save A Life
9:36 You Gotta Be - Des'ree
9:10 King Of Wishful Thinking

Which “Dreams” at 11:51? Fleetwood Mac? Cranberries? Van Halen? Ok, probably not VH. But I’m guessing Fleetwood Mac, and if so, I can’t remember the last time I heard a ‘70s song on B. So you may be on to something there.

Comparing daily logs from Tuesday, September 19, 2023 and Tuesday, March 19, 2024

Using 1pm hour as reference point:
On September 19, 13 songs in the hour. 3 currents, 2 recurrents, rest golds made up of 2 90s songs, 2 2000s, 4 2010s. 11:45 of commercials/promos.

On March 19, 14 songs in the hour. 3 currents, 1 recurrent, rest golds made up of 3 90s songs, 3 2000s, and 4 2010s. 11:45 of commercials/promos.

No discernible changes in the weekly spins of powers, etc... This looks more like your perception has changed based on hearing songs that have been continuously cycled out of the playlist between 0-3 spins each week.

So, the station that plays "80s, 90s, and now" mostly plays "now". Even though "now" spans 25 years.

Comparatively speaking, B98,5 is playing more currents, and playing them more frequently, than most other big market ACs, such as KOST in LA.

For example, Philadelphia's B101 is playing 3 currents, all less than 18 times a week. B98.5 has over a dozen, and their heavies get 40 spins a week.

I do agree that list above is slightly lighter than B98.5 has been... but still not near a traditional AC, IMO

Sample Hour: Mar 26, 2024 at 10:00 PM

WBBQ-FM Augusta, GA iHeartMedia

10:02 PINK Raise Your Glass (2010)
10:06 PM CETERA, PETER Glory Of Love (1986)
10:12 PM LEWIS, LEONA Bleeding Love (2007)
10:16 PM LADY GAGA Bad Romance (2009)
10:28 PM BON JOVI Livin' On A Prayer (1986)
10:34 PM MR. MISTER Broken Wings (1985)
10:39 PM COMBS, LUKE Fast Car (2021)
10:43 PM MEDLEY, BILL/WARNES, JENNIFER (I've Had) The Time Of My Life (1987)
10:47 PM SPEARS, BRITNEY Toxic (2003)
10:59 PM UNCLE KRACKER Drift Away f/Dobie Gray (2003)

And what's more... WBBQ, Lite FM/New York and other traditional AC stations, sometimes even play Billy Joel's "Moving Out", Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" and The Commadores "Brick House" But those are right at the late '70s early '80s cutoff for most traditional ACs. Now if B starts playing that stuff, then I would definitely say they are making big changes.

Plus, B spins way more currents at 40+ times per week. Traditional AC's spin maybe 10 or 12 currents and at a peak of only around 32 times per week. You might even go a whole hour without even one current song at all. Lol

There was a big change at B98.5, but it happened about 13 years ago after Bob Neil stepped down as President of Cox Radio. Bob “invented” the Cox AC format, which included zero current product and did really well for many years.

I was told by a longtime B98.5 employee that Cox AC station programmers were screaming for change, which led to Bob’s departure.

Where is Caller10?

That list seems something closer to soft rock.

Compared to what we're used to here, yes. But, it's pretty normal with most medium and major market AC's. Complete with Delilah every night and 6 weeks of Christmas music during the holidays. Lol But somehow Atlanta's the only major market where this format doesn't work. It's literally like the eighth wonder of the world. 🤔
