B98.5 ... Wow!

Should that be 98.5 B-grees?

goldenboy you are correct, I believe that's what she said. I can't believe Clear Channel Atlanta "pulled the Peach" and let Cox have this AC market all to themselves! Oh where's CurtisInPA when you need him?

If only you all had KPKX and KESZ. :( But don't complain because at least you have stations that are at least trying to deliver something that otherwise would be nonexistent.

Today Jordan Graye reminded everybody to keep track of the songs played to win some lame family friendly prize. Everybody Wang Chung tonight, it's another totally 80s weekend on B98.5 FM!

I need to come back and revive the Saturday Night All Request Dance Party (no they couldn't sing that in a jingle)

Those are the tunes that we found in the dumpster after you threw away all of your eight track tapes..remember?

Platform shoes, and bell bottoms..fire up the disco ball, and let's all boogie

no no they pulled LITE-FM not the peach

I know that. "Pulled the Peach" had a funnier ring to it ... otherwise I need a synonym for "pull" in that context that starts with the letter "L'. ;D

What's wrong with simply "turning out the Lite"?

Sounds like a lot of "bull" to me :D

I thought it would be funny instead of it being "94.9 The Bull" if it were "BULL: 94.9" and they could have their voice over talent between songs snippets in an image promo just over emphasize the word "BULL ... (song) ... BULL ... (song) .... BULL"

Go ahead with your snarky comments, but it shows none of you posters on this thread have a clue as to what makes a station successful today. You may not like B98.5, but it works, and you guys don't know why. ::)

Could lack of competition be an answer? It's like having a large city but only one bank company controlling and monopolizing all the banks in the city. The company can charge the highest interest rates and do whatever they want to do. No other bank company is willing to challenge and compete with them. Isn't that similar to B98.5? They are the ONLY AC station in this market, and until a competitor comes along, they will be successful and do what they want they want to do, even if they play a 150 song playlist. The best thing to do is not listen to the station if it is bothersome. I have enjoyed not listening to B98.5 for a long time now because there are other good radio stations in other markets that I can access and stream to suite my taste.

And the landscape of radio business has changed rapidly with more focus on revenue than catering to the needs of listeners and that helps them that they are successful today.

Well, they don't have direct competition, but AC listeners typically listen to several formats, including
Classic Hits, Country, Oldies, Talk. If B98.5 were doing poorly in programming to their target, they wouldn't pull good ratings, because their are other choicies.

My point on the first post, and I've learned this in 30 years of programming, is...if radio people like your station, it probably will not do well with regular listeners. If radio people are bored with it, it's probably right on target.

It's like the TV shows that all the critics love, but do poorly in the ratings.

Surfdude, I think it's also changing times in a declining marketplace. In their heyday 99x and Power 99 were were very respected in the industry and the marketplace .... come to think of it shoot me down but AC has never been on the forefront of exciting radio programming by it's nature. In fairness to B98.5, I'm sure Jordan and Kelly are good folks and I'm just having a little fun. I also know Rebecca Stephens (former B98.5 Love Songs host, and one of the earliest weather casters on The Weather Channel) well and think she (was) one of the greatest people on planet earth in this industry ... it's the fact that this industry doesn't have a place for people like Rebecca so they carry Delilah is part of my point .... ditto a real night time slammer on Q100 instead of Billy Bush. But the economics suck now.

B98.5 is the strangest AC station period. However, Cox can have some pretty boring stations.

Their top 10 according to yes.com:

David Cook - Time of My Life
Miley Cyrus - The Climb
Daughtry - What About Now
The Fray - You Found Me
Daughtry - Home
Daughtry - Feels Like Tonight (3 of the top 10 are Daughtry)
Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me
Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You
Jason Mraz - I'm Yours
Fergie - Big Girls Don't Cry

What year is this, 2008? Almost everything in the top 25 is from 2006-2008.

Where are (all on the AC chart or were recently):
Lady Antebellum - Need You Now
Train - Hey, Soul Sister
Michael Buble - Havent Met You Yet
Rob Thomas - Someday/Her Diamonds
Kelly Clarkson - Already Gone (why play MLWSWY which didn't chart on AC but not this one)?
Colbie Caillat - Fallin' For You

etc etc etc? A REAL AC station (look at WBEB/Philadelphia) would kill them.

B98.5 for years has been extraordinarily slow about playing currents and only adding songs long after they had grown stale on Star 94. The station only changes its playlist twice a year. That's the Bob Neil way. It works because its listeners aren't the types who care or pay attention to new music and need something familiar to play as background music while they shuttle the kids around town or toiling away at work.

And how does this affect Q100?

I can see changing 70s/80s/90s twice a year, but currents need to be added as they climb up the chart. That's how 90% of AC's probably do it. I have never heard an AC as strange as 98.5 and hope I never hear another one.

As long as 98.5 is the only AC they can truly play what they feel like. Kind of what the “Jack” format was supposed to be. They literally could have a three week playlist that they repeat over and over and over till Christmas comes, and they will still make a ton of cash. Do they have or need a music director? They could hire a temp a week or two and be OK. I am surprised that nobody “covets” their demos and makes a run at them. I guess the $$ is not there. Maybe the loser of the under 30 demos will make a “run” at 98.5. Until then AC listeners will enjoy (that an order!) 98.5. Like fatigues when I was in the service, (Many years ago) made in your choice of green.

It's another big 80s weekend on B98.5 FM! I'm enjoying all these swell tunes while trying to stay cool in the heat! Why do show prep when you can just make some generic reference to the weather? And speaking of the weather, the weather forecast Sunday sounds exactly like the one from yesterday. What's the current temperature? Oh never mind. Tomorrow morning it's the B98.5 FM 98 at 9! That's 98 minutes of music every weekday morning at nine. It's a great way to start your workday! It's no wonder B98.5 FM is the station voted #1 for the most music while you listen at work!
