Back Again, For The FIRST Time!

Ok, Since I am NOT leaving Phoenix after all, I might as well talk about Phoenix!
HMMM http://www.radio-info.com/markets/phoenix A few Questions Here:
_____________________________________________________________________/

1. Since when did KKFR become a "Rhythmic CHR"?

2. Just noticed that Clear Channel has both a Hot AC and CHR within the same city. Is this probably the reason why KMXP is so adult style pop rock leaning while KZZP leans very rhythmic? Look at who's winning between the two. Would KZZP be better off just leaning more adult (And would they if KMXP wasn't around)?

3. LOL at KZON and their high cume and ratings. If KZON got any higher, they would have to start hanging out with Snoop Dogg.

4. Is KQMR even necessary anymore with KVIB? I guess you could somewhat say (or ask) the same when it comes to both KYOT and KAJM... If we're going to do a "lower ratings battle", then someone might as well just go dance! (Yes, I said it! Please send all hate mail to [email protected]) Or perhaps, urban?

5. Would KNRJ do better or worse if they became an Urban Contemporary or a similar type of format? Apparently they are the only real hip hop station in town. Should they just go more current while keeping the same format style?

6. Since there was a change in plans, and I AM NOT GOING ANYWHERE, I am excited to be IN Phoenix in 2011 to enjoy KVIT The Goldmine when it debuts in Phoenix sometime next month! But I question; How many Top 40 / Chr's can the valley support? I don't think KMVA is going anywhere because they seem to keep fine tuning and "perfecting" their top 40 playlist and finding their "niche style."

7. Since when did KFYI start having trouble and why? It doesn't look like the listeners necessarily ran off to KTAR either....

8. What's going on with KPKX?

9. And last (but not least), who else is going to get Christmassy this year? I'm sure there's got to be a format change in store for somebody in Phoenix this year. ("Christmassy" is my new favorite word. I stole it from somebody... and she's reading this and smiling RIGHT NOW..) I wanna hear My Favorite Christmas LP! ;)

KFYI actually seems to be recovering (#9), though I'm guessing the demos ain't pretty.

Stations I'd watch for possible action: Eva, KNIX, The Peak, KTAR-FM and The X. That doesn't necessarily mean a format change, but none of them are where they need to be.

That cume is monstrous...but doesn't appear that The Peak can keep listeners from going elsewhere. 98~Seven is the Buckeye Boyz Numero Uno choice for the Valley's first FM Sportstalk station, but KOOL Listener Lauren thinks one of the Gumpdusky FM's will switch first. We've challenged her to a road apple tossing duel in the Media Hut parking lot to settle the dispute. So far her staff hasn't responded to our invite :p

Sports on FM....

Makes a lot of sense. I like the good Dr. Akbar's prediction of 98.7 flipping. They haven't carved the niche they should have and Mix 96-9 owns that territory for now.

Could Sandusky flip one of their FM signals to sports? It dang sure won't be KSLX the way that station has been on fire lately. KUPD is the only active rock in town, so that leaves KDKB. That seems heretical to change the format, but nobody knows what to do with that station. So as incredible as it seems, I could envision sports on 93.3. Heck, they once carried Coyotes PBP at night...

And to Mr. Hegarty, your observations about underperforming stations are always prescient. I also noted that Eva took a drop and KNIX has, sadly, been underwater for a long time. It would be just as inconceivable for KNIX to not be country as it would be for KDKB not to be rock. But... something has to give. That said, I've long advocated for "95 point 5-50 KFYI."

Last I heard, KLL is waiting for cooler weather and the road apples to "harden up". She once spent a summer on the farm and she ain't no fool! ;D

Welcome back (?)

1. KKFR...could really care less. It's less than a former shadow of what it once was (IMO)...sad.

2. Not unusual. KRQ (CHR) and KOHT (Rhythmic) in Tucson are both owned by CC.

3. Would like to hear more occasional dance songs outside of mixes (like Avicii - Levels, Wynter Gordon, Deadmau5, etc) like at sister stations CBS stations B96 (Chicago) and Now 92.3 (New York).

4. At least KQMR plays lunch hour mixes with artists like Armin Van Buuren, Deadmau5, etc. I'd rather keep KAJM the way it is and make KYOT like an edgier KTU or even a new alternative station (although I personally like X103.9, but miss the Edge).

5. I miss Energy.

6. When is KVIT debuting in Phoenix? More importantly, how strong will the signal be? Sounds exciting.

7. No comment.

8. I actually like KPKX. I'd much prefer it stay the way it is than have "sports" on FM (or more news for that matter).

9. I was hoping KMVA would go Christmas again this year. It's not a horrible station, but there really is nothing about it that stands out. They don't take any chances (boring).

Actually KVIT is already on in Mesa. It debuted on 90.7 sometime ago. I got confused because I thought it was just an online station that was going to go on air later, but I heard it on 90.7 while I was driving in the east side of Phoenix (or Mesa, if you want to gt technical). Not sure where I got January from.  ;)

I don't think KZON is going to mess around with their format too much now that they are at the top. From observation, I'd say the two times stations tend to not mess with things too much after fine tuning their format are either when they are starting out on the bottom trying to get their audience familiarized with a consistent format style, and when they are on the top using whatever formula got them there in the first place.

The good thing about being established and on top is that you have a little more room to experiment slightly with certain things (which probably explains why The House Party has been extended) unlike when you are struggling in ratings, where changes could cause the small fickle audience that you have to believe the station isn't consistent.

Ah, yes...I knew it was already on, you just got me excited thinking that the coverage was expanding.

Word.

Oh crap. Did I really just say that? :-[

Anyway, what the hell happened to KKFR? Back when I moved here in the (mumble mumble I am old), KKFR was on top of the world. Now they're a rim shot with air talent that costs less than a Circle K night manager. I mean, Bruce Kelly's drug habit was more expensive than the entire Power air staff nowadays.

How did this happen?

How did this happen?

Well Emmis sold KPKX, KTAR, KMVP to Bonneville for a lot of money and kept KKFR for a little over a year. Emmis sold KKFR for a lot of money and Bonneville who bought the 92.3 frequency which is on South Mountain sold the rights for the format and the studios to the 103.9 folks who just bought the 98.3 rimshot from Towers Mountain from the people who moved it there. So KKFR moved from 92.3 to 98.3

If the dominoes didn't fall like they did (Jacor buying Nationwide and launching the "Mix" format at the time), KZZP would be the number one station with their Hot/Modern AC format. But, Randy Michaels' managers liked to change up things when they took over stations. Strangely enough, Mix may be considered the successor to the '96-99 KZZP.

Maybe Mega is still there for men who like the music on Eva, but feel like they're stripped of their manhood listening to a station called "Eva!" ;D

What's wrong with The Peak....Beyonce's "Single Ladies" is to the station what "Brown Eyed Girl" "Bette Davis Eyes" is to KOOL! I suspect the "buggy" software-driven "U Pick It" at night isn't helping either. A few weeks ago, I heard Mike & The Mechanics' "All I Need Is A Miracle" three times in a three hour span! Not that it's a bad song, they've just been having issues with the "Listener Driven Radio" interface that powers the show, and the engineers haven't shown a willingness to fix it. LDR/"U Pick It" is a good idea with poor execution.

Is it just me, or did KPKX tweak back a little towards the adult pop rock sound? They once had more recurrent and current rhythmic pop material than they do now.

I remember the '96-'99 KZZP...that was a GOOD time for the station (IMO). Of course, I remember KKFR from the early 90's through '97 (especially 95-97) and that was a GREAT time for that station. Now, I wish they'd just blow up KKFR. Sure the coverage certainly isn't as good as it once was being that they're on 98.3 now, but they HAD the opportunity to tweak their format with the return of dancier pop songs (since dance was obviously a part of their call letters' heritage), and they totally blew it.

As for Power 98.3 flipping, the new owners, who should be taking the keys any day, have enough issues with 103.9 to deal with to flip TWO stations right away.
