Back Again, For The FIRST Time!

I remember the '96-'99 KZZP...that was a GOOD time for the station (IMO).

you think so? that was a very vanilla version of KissFM. They were competing with 103.9 and the ghetto version of Power 92. I remember hearing Smash Mouth and Chumbawumba junk

Now, I wish they'd just blow up KKFR.... they HAD the opportunity to tweak their format with the return of dancier pop songs (since dance was obviously a part of their call letters' heritage), and they totally blew it.

Actually Power did attempt dance somewhat in 2009-2010. They were playing Gaga, Mike Posner, & BEP in the day and getting somewhat Edgy on the mixes. I heard Electro mixes of Evermore - Its Too Late and Daft Punk stuff too. It was done wrong though. They kept their hood DJs, still selling the staion as if it was hip hop.

I got your email...wow.

In any case, I was thinking of KZZP when they were more of a modern station. For some reason, I remember hearing quite a bit of Sarah McLachlan and Chantel Kreviazuk...must've been around '97. However, I do remember hearing Chumbawumba EVERYWHERE...in Mexico, Greece, etc...ugh.

I liked KISS at other times when I could hear Amber, Darude, iiO, Daniel Bedingfield, Sonique, Telepopmusik, etc. which would've been around '99 and 2001/2002.

No offense, but that was their ENTIRE Dance Library! They were just doing that because we were making a buzz at Energy

Nah...some of those songs were getting airplay BEFORE Energy came on. I specifically remember. When I found out that KNRJ were new call letters for Phoenix (before the station came on) I knew that a dance station was coming to Phoenix. I had remembered those same call letters in Houston in '90 (when it was Energy 96.5) and was a fan of Energy 92.7 in Chicago (my family is there).

Kiss has always been a poser station. When they played Sonique, ATC and Darude, it was only after Party 103.9 did it first. Yet they ignored songs like Modjo - Lady or Daft Punk - One More Time (with the exception of Greggy D Mixes). It wasn't until the Launch of Energy Radio before Kiss began doing Afterhours from Polyesters in Scottsdale, playing our whole playlist. So it was no surprise when Greggy D quit 104.7 and joined Energy with Randy doing afternoons....he was MD of Kiss, yet was attracted to KNRJ.

First, I must give it up for Kiss because they did help the Phoenix dance music scene to a degree. They also played The Freestylers "don't stop" and "Mambo Italiano" (Fx2 Remix) by Shaft http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkNo-QD2asU (No one else in Phoenix played that song in regular rotation that I know of).

AND they were the ONLY one to play "Masquerade"by Science when it was a hit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73WnZrMjEvo&feature=related

OK, 103.9 did also play "masquerade" once, in a mix.

Kiss FM played Sonique in 1999, way before anyone else I knew of. That was shortly before I went to Cuba for the 2nd time in January 2000. By the time I got back to Phoenix in April 2000, Kiss was all over Alice Deejay, Amber, and even had "I do both Jay & Jane" in mix shows (in addition to Power 92 and the new 103.9 The Party which "re-debuted" Back Again, For a SECOND Time, in January 2000).

I must say Kiss FM played a big role in keeping dance music known to people who would've otherwise never known a lot of dance material for a few years (up until the point when they decided to drop ALL dance music and dance artists (Including Kylie Minogue) from their playlist during a Jan. 2004 format change, following a New Years Weekend All Weekend Mix, which was also when they also introduced "Toxic" by Britney Spears for the first time (soon to be their ONLY uptempo hit in regular rotation)). (By the way, that format flip did end their short rhythmic attempt when they went up directly against Power 92 and they switched back to CHR top 40, adding alternative and Pop Rock back into the format.)

For quite a while, after Kiss FM decided to drop all their dance music, the only hope for dance outside of Energy was whenever KISS FM did their specialty "back in the day weekends" for Holiday's, and after 2005, listening to Club 95 Latino Vibe, or Knick Knack on Power 92 at 9:00pm and during Power Mix Weekends (The Year Round Throwdown) when he did his best attempt to take things uptempo occasionally during HIS sets).

For a while, tt was like a drought for uptempo music on chr rhythmic and top 40 radio up until Rihanna's "SOS" by Rihanna was released, followed shortly after by "Lose Control" by Missy & Ciara, "Control Myself" by LL Cool J, "Sexy back" by Justin Timberlake, "Ain't no other man" by Christina Aguilera, "Man Eater" by Nelly Furtado, and I guess you can include "My Humps" (both original and Lil Jon Mix) from Black Eyed Peas. Yes, Kiss FM did have "Don't Phunk With My Heart" by Black Eyed Peas in rotation before all of that other stuff, so that was the first sign of "uptempo-ness" they had going at the time. This is where the chain reaction began as the "Dance Music Comeback" began to unfold in mid to late 2005..............

...And flash forward to now, and dance music is officially Back Again, for the First Time. ;)

As far as blowing up KKFR, I don't think they should go anywhere at this point. They are the Valley's ONLY hope and source for current hip hip hits at the moment. Unless 99.3 does a better job at flipping to a current urban format, Power 98.3 will be the only station feeding the valley with hip hop hits.

Perhaps, big winner KZON could tweak to be somewhat similar to the KOHT sound if KKFR disappeared, but that wouldn't necessarily fill in the hip hop sound, and Phoenix is too big of a market to not have a hip hop station that is at least as "hip" as Power 106 in LA, during a time when hip hop artists are still hanging in there and pumping out hits. The "lack of hip hop / urban contemporary in Los Angeles situation" itself is already fascinating and peculiar enough as it is!
___________________________________________________________________________________

Like it or not, but I'm just going to lay out my opinion and say what I feel about their current hip hop music format style and arrangement:

-----> To sum it all up in a nutshell, since KKFR is going to continue with the hip hop (or rhythmic format with the hip hop lean), they should've kept, and would've sounded much better keeping their original long time Program Director from 1997 to about 2008 or so. We all have opinions, and that one is mine.

By the way, speaking of a wish for Top 40 Radio in Phoenix, looks like we got our wish with the sea of it we have now: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=26492.0

those are REALLY obscure examples. Both came out in late 90's, so therefore could not have been in regular rotation on Kiss since the flip happened in 2000. Hearing on a specialty weekend does not count.

That's impossible. Unless KPTY played it with their alternative rock! 103.9 The Party did not flip back to rhythmic until January 2000. They played "we like to party" by Vengaboys all new years weekend before they flipped. When they first came back, they were 100% pop (meaning pure Britney, Backstreet Boys, Nsync, Blaque....etc. type sound).

Kiss FM was the first and last station I heard play Sonique's song before I left for Cuba in January 2000. I remember getting out of the car to enter the airport at terminal 3 with my walkman on and 104.7 started playing "It feels so good" by Sonique.

By the way, those obscure titles above only prove that they helped the dance music scene. The more obscure they were, the more exposure to NON mainstream dance music the audience received.  ;) They didn't play them when they were new, but did start playing them in regular recurrent rotation in 2003 when KZZP started experimenting more with dance (including El Presidente's latin house hit, "Cafe Con Leche"). It was a few months before they added "Gifted" (Extralicious Mix) by Angelina ► www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC1PCB_213c, which all came to an abrupt end when KZZP decided to go pure rhythmic with an urban feel against Power 92 in mid 2003.

I was walking down the street towards Zia Records on University & Mill when Mambo Italiano (Fx2 Remix) by Shaft played in regular rotation on KZZP on my walkman around mid 2003. The Freestyler's and El Presidente song were played at other times, but also as recurrents in regular rotation on KZZP.

I don't remember exactly, but it was either a NEW YEARS MIX weekend, or SUPERBOWL MIX WEEKEND when KZZP flipped back to CHR in 2003. I do remember, for some reason, they did a mix weekend - For The Superbowl (out of all things) once. I believe that was the one where Janet Jackson's boob also made a guest appearance.

OK, Now I remember what it was. Yes I realize 103.9's second version of Rhythmic wasn't until 2000, so I must be thinking of Power 92. They played Sonique everyday at Noon on the Power Work Out with DJ Earth in 1999. Although his mixing was questionable, it was common for him to break those kind of songs. That was the 1st time I also heard Alice Deejay...not KZZP. They killed that show in 2000 and then changed it to Diggin in the Crates with DJ Shy.

I hate to say it, but this, as well, is impossible! I clearly remember that ever since the time I first heard "it feels so good" by Sonique premiered on KZZP, I was so desperate to hear an extended mix and see what it sounded like in a mix! I was actually bummed about going to Cuba so soon because I wanted to hear what it would sound like mixed BEFORE I left for Cuba! It never happened (before I left in January 2000) because Power never used it at the time, and KZZP decided to do (what I remember being) some crazy back in the day weekend for new years, THEN REPEATED that mix the next weekend again!

So, I never actually got to hear it mixed in a mix until I got back in April 2000!

I don't exactly remember what Power was doing, but for some reason, they never played it in any mix before I left! Even the day I went to get four of my wisdom teeth out on Jan. 9, 2000, I made sure to be up and awake during the times of any mixshows, and.... NO SONIQUE!  :(

You must have not listened at Noon then (perhaps you were in school) as the Import actually came out in 1998:

The Power Work Out Mix was 1st on playing songs before they became domestic.

Sometimes. They missed A LOT of songs, though, and were late on others. I was out of school as of May/June, 1999. AL3 started the Power Workout at noon in January 1999 (and this was back when I wrote Mini Salas the 4 Page Letter expressing how excited about it I was before it happened). Power didn't play Sonique before I left for Cuba around the end of January 2000. When I got back in April, however, that's when I first heard Dj Earth using it and the remixes. I also remember Phoenix being late on Amber's "sexual", which wasn't playing before I left, but was surely playing when I got back.

Actually, Power played "Sexual" by Amber in the mix for the first time in late summer or fall 1999 when Jose Melendez from WiLD 94.9 KYLD was a guest dj for a Power 5 o clock mix once. I ended up buying the cassette single shortly after. He was also the first to play "bailando bailando" by Angelina and other things on Power that Phoenix was late on.

I believe Dj Fashen also used Amber's song a few times as well in later 1999 during the 5 o clock mix, when Power was "testing out" some dance during that time. One day Dj Fashen played it amongst the Prince Ice Cali Bass Remix of "Thug Mentallity" by Krayzie Bone, Aaliyah's "Are you that somebody", and 112's "Anywhere" (Booty Bass Remix). That mix was repeated another day as well.

No Sonique, though. I actually looked forward to and waited to hear Sonique in mixes before I left. Not once could I catch it.

Wow! Can't believe this is all happening again, for the first time!

The only thing I remember from New Year's Eve on KZZP that was significant was the premiere of the syndicated Ghetto House Party.
