Back To The Future For 104.1

My comments have nothing to do with how Kiss sounds. I am not comparing 104 to Kiss, or to any other radio station. The station does not sound very good IMO, and I think that people on this board are giving it more credit than it truly deserves because it is locally owned (and your comment pretty much proved my point).

You certainly are entitled to your opinion. Nobody can accuse this board of being overly positive about anything. It's been five days. See what you think in five weeks or five months. If you can cite specific, well-considered reasons why you think Radio 104.1 sounds good or bad, I'm sure the hard working people putting this work-in-progress together will make note of it.

How about staff? Is Brian Ram GM/PD/MD or have they brought on a PD/MD? Who's the airstaff and where are they from? Are all the staff positions filled or are they still fine-tuning? And where are the studios now - they're still not at 10 Columbus, are they? On air, the music and focus seems to wander around a bit but as GlennO says - it's been five days, WTF. Give 'em five months and THEN critique them. I bet they'll do just fine. It's not like there's a ton of signals doing what they're doing in central CT. I wish them well...

"You're listening to the legendary Radio 104.1...WMRQ -Waterbury/Hartford/New Haven...and 104.1 HD Digital", to be exact. :)
A "legendary" station (previously) under Clear Channel ownership -- who knew?

I tend to agree with Halloran here. Not to pile on, but the station doesn't sound very good. You can barely understand the VO in the imaging, which sounds like you are getting ready for a monster truck rally.
I too wish them the best of luck, but it is amateur radio at best.

Just sit here and look pretty! ;D
JSB doesn't do either! He does serve as WBMW/WWRX/WMRQ's production director, and he's right up there with other great Hartford production people like Rob Ray, Lee Gordon and Jay Policow.

Nobody's ever accused me of being a corporate shill. "Corporate" would never descride John Fuller. So please take as sincere these words I sent out to Red Wolf air staffers with yesterday's morning show prep:

As the "senior announcer" (translated: oldest guy) at Red Wolf, I just have to say that in 34 years of broadcasting I've never seen such a radio pressure cooker as I have witnessed here this year. Brian Ram built WMRQ from the ground up, and it sounds great (knock on wood). In all of these decades, I have never been so proud of the people who share studios with me. Take a deep breath and pat yourselves on the back!

Glenn O'Brien
Co-host of the Wakeup Club with Glenn & Rebecca / WBMW

Thanks Glenn!!

Since this is Radio-INFO, here goes: Brian Ram is the VP/Programming of Red Wolf Broadcasting -WBMW/WWRX/WMRQ. The voices you hear on Radio 104.1 right now are from other Red Wolf stations, with backgrounds in Providence, New Haven and Philadelphia. WMRQ is operating from the Ledyard, CT studios while WMRQ studios and offices get built in Glastonbury. Fine tuning continues. I love to chat radio, and so does the PD, but I don't recommend a phone call to him by job seekers. At the moment, Ram is slammed. Send a demo if you think you can take WMRQ to the next level. BTW, the alternative music format is a bit more eclectic than many may think - one song this morning even surprised me, but there's a method to it. Thanks for the well wishes!

Thanks for the update, Glenn.

No, not job seeking - I'm pretty well tucked in doing what I'm doing but I was interested in what 104.1 was going to morph into...

As you said, "BTW, the alternative music format is a bit more eclectic than many may think - one song this morning even surprised me, but there's a method to it."

Which was that surprise - The Inxs from 1988 or the Marley from '77? I can see that working in the 6-7:30AM slot. You do seem to hit the "way back machine" a bit. How far back does your gold categoty go? Do you see yourself staying more gold base than current/recurrent? Sounds about 3 to 1 gold. Or is that a part of the, "work in progress?"

Are you going to be doing any special Memorial weekend programming or are you keeping on doing what you're doing?

I'll leave those music nuances to the people who actually put that together. I'm only restating what's already been out there - as a seasoned wingman, not the Top Gun. Thanks to all who have shown interest and kept the discussion on a refreshingly professional level.

I like Guns 'N Roses, but 104.1 needs to stop playing all these tracks from Appetite for Destruction. They are NOT modern rock and don't belong on the playlist in that format.
