Bad sound at KHYI

I thought the owners of "The Ranch" bought the Jacksboro station and frequency because that transmitter location gave them a better geographic spot for the 95.9 transmitter enabling a better signal into Fort Worth and parts of Dallas County. Has this not happened yet?

Couple of Quick Notes, the constant static and sizzle in the right channel was found to be a problem with one of the STL units. it has been dropped off with Marti in Cleburne and should be back in place as soon as they make their repairs. A tube in the transmitter that went out has been replaced and KHYI is now operating at 100% power. (Stronger signal on my car radio than my former employer which was mentioned just earlier in this thread) which brings me to my third note, KFWR is not the same format as KHYI, sure they play Texas/Red Dirt, but that's where they leave it. We bring Americana into the mix as well. On KHYI you'll hear more Steve Earle, Joe Ely, Townes Van Zandt, along with acts that the other guys just won't play like Fred Eaglesmith, or Corb Lund, or even the Hottest new act in the nation right now out of Austin, Sons of Fathers. And yes the spanish religious translator is still on and they've been saying they were going to move the tower out of Mineral Wells for years even when I was there from 05-08, it was always, according to mgmt just months away.

That seems to be a constant line with management/owners. I lost count how many times Ken Jones said, ".......And wait until we moved down the dial and get our 100,000 watt power increase!"

Sir, I don't feed lines. I happened to be reporting back on an issue that I am personally staying on top of and working to get corrected. I don't deserve having you brush it off as lip service when I am actually getting things done. Whatever may have happened in the past with the station or whatever other pd's may have said, I am not them. If I post something on here as happening with the station, as I did with the update I gave, give me the courtesy of trusting what I say as statement of fact. Doing something as simple as turning on your radio will show you that the facts as I laid out are indeed what is happening. The station's signal is stronger and if you listen you will note that we are broadcasting in mono as I stated and that is because the right channel STL was sent in for repairs. I don't know you, but the point is you don't know me either, to make assumptions about me based on what you know from the station in the past is both disrespectful and unfair to me.

I have noticed that the station sounds stronger & clearer listening on a car radio this week. It's hard to hear 95.3 where I live (near White Rock Lake) or it used to be anyway, I'll have to try again. But listening to Allan Peck while driving north of the lake & in Garland two afternoons this week it was noticably improved.

Update right STL back from Marti and reinstalled, still had noise, so left marti removed last night and being taken down to Cleburne for repairs.. Signal still at 100%, although KLTY's little problem this week hurt us for a few hours as they were broadcasting all over us when their antennas burned up. As soon as we get that one back and in place, you should hear a marked improvement with the sound.

As always, please feel free to email me [email protected] with any questions or comments on the station.

The only difference I have noticed this past week is it sounds like yall are keeping the audio levels at a reasonable volume. It's an improvement but still waiting for the final product. So many times over the past year I would tune in and the audio was too hot and over-modulating/splattering all over the place.

Another update. Left STL has been repaired and is back in place. We are broadcasting in stereo. Sound, at least imho is much better than it has been in a long time. Is it perfect, not yet, but as I said a while back, little steps, little steps. Just thought you would appreciate an update.

As always, my email is [email protected]

Before anybody responds and decides to rip me, I just wanted to add to my last post above, that I do not think that the work in correcting the sound is by any means complete, just stating that it is better and on the road to improvement.

Thank you for the update. I'll tune in later. Is Allan Peck on this week ?

As you say, "little steps" , listening earlier this week it sounded better, was in stereo, but still has a ways to go to sound as good as most other FM's. But it's noticably better than it was. Listening while in Denton in November it sounded so muddy that I stopped listening after just a few minutes. It has improved since then.

Thanks for noticing. I'm working my butt to get things done and make improvements as I can. Our optimod has been sent off for repairs, so I'm kind of at an impasse as far as making adjustment to the sound quality til that gets back. The station doesn't have enough brilliance for me, we sound too flat when compared to other stations in the market. I'll keep pushing forward little by little.

I almost hesitate to do another update, but here we go...Optimod is back from being repaired and has been installed, a new compressor/limiter has been installed, tube has been retuned. I can pick up the station in Keller where I live, listened in my wife's car last night for about an hour, signal comes in pretty strong in her car which is an 03 buick with factory radio. Is it perfect? No. Is it better? IMHO yes. But before you say no, or that I'm out of my mind, all I ask is that you actually listen for twenty - thirty minutes before posting. As always, my email box remains open.

I was actually picking up KHYI fairly strong in White Settlement this weekend.

It sounds better to me. I picked it up, not clearly, but well enough to identify it, near Granbury on Saturday. Just wish it didn't have to null through central & southern Dallas Co.

Thanks for the feedback guys. There are some things we can't do anything about, but those that we can I am doing my best to correct.

I'll be glad when KXEZ gets fixed up.
I remember back in their Oldies days when they updated the audio and had a promo running that read "Clean, Clear, Crisp. No were not promoting another new brand of Cola, we here at KXEZ..."
KXEZ sounded CLEAR as heck that whole time up until they did SOMETHING that ruined both KHYI and KXEZ's audio.

signal has never been an issue for me since I'm in the northern 'burbs. It still sounds like an AM broadcast to me :/ I have not heard overmodulation/splattering in quite a while so I guess that's good. Still hope yall can get the lo-fi AM style audio fixed and not tell us to listen online as a solution.

I'm actually thinking that this has something to do with the Barix link from the Dallas Studio on Greenville to the Allen Studios, and if so, it's determined by the amount of internet bandwidth available. Just a guess as I don't know enough about the Barix.
