Baltimore Ravens Fans & The Replacement Refs' Manure

How would FCC handle this? For the viewers of the west coast, it's outside the Safe Harbor Hour (10PM to 6AM).

According to this article, NBC will not be fined for the broadcast.

Fined by the FCC or the NFL? ;)

Maybe the broadcasters are not league employees, but if they go too far, the NFL probably can step in. All the broadcasters have been treading a fine line when it comes to criticizing these officials. I don't think this is a coincidence.

I don't know what Goodell could do if one of the broadcasters just let loose and ripped either the refs for being inept or Goodell himself for allowing this to happen. Could he withdraw the league's approval of an announcer? Force a network to suspend a guy for speaking his mind? I'd love to see one of the network announcers finally say his piece, especially after tonight's fiasco.

So will this drag on until some team loses a game that might possibly cost them being in the playoffs because of some bad call by a ref? Maybe by then some owners might finally speak up to get this mess settled.

Notice that Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth chose their words very carefully last night when they talked about these alleged refs. .... I'll be willing to bet that the networks were warned as well.

Al & Chris are not employees of the NFL. They can speak their minds if they wish, though discretion is the better part of valor.

Broadcasters in all sports can and do incur the wrath of the Commissioner - if not directly, then via their own bosses - if they go after the officials. Just ask Hawk Harrelson, who's been reprimanded more than once by both Kennesaw Molehill Selig and Jerry Reinsdorf for chastising umpires on-air.

Clearly, the Ravens fans forgot, didn't know or just didn't give a damn that the game was being aired on NBC (a broadcast network that could have been easily fined for the incident) when they did the chant or the fact that there were likely kids there with their families whose parents probably wouldn't have wanted have them exposed to HBO-level profanity like that. Pretty stupid on the crowd in retrospect, but I can see where they could get wrapped up in their distaste for the ref's call, there's no way for officiatiors in any sport to make calls where some spectator doesn't find it to be absolutely out-of-line.

Have you ever attended an NFL game? This is the norm when a bad call is made. If you want clean stick with college football.

The only football games I have personally witnessed were between college teams and I have never heard any chants of expletives during those games.

Have you avoided NFL or other pro games by design, Mario? Or by lack of finances or "the right connections"?

This FG controversy reminds me of a suggestion a letter writer to SI wrote a few years ago: Put in a second crossbar, connecting the upper ends of the uprights, thus creating a rectangle. Not only would this help make it more obvious as to whether a kick is good or not, it would make the pk take into consideration the amount of lift in the kick, the force of the kick, etc. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I have never avoided any professional games by design or due to a lack of finances. I would only witness a professional game if other folks I know very well are interested in witnessing the same game and that has never happened in my life so far.

College can be worse, actually.

CAUTION VERY NSFW

Ain't that the truth :D...I used to do camera for the local cable access channel here and we covered the local university (Mount Allison in Sackville, NB about 10 min from here) and some of the stuff that used to come from those fans (especially their real-life version of Delta House, Trueman House) would curl your hair...a lot of it usually of an X-rated nature referring to the colors of the opponents' uniforms and alleged off-field activities, if you catch my drift ::)

I am in Pittsburgh, where you nearly always hear "Baltimore Ravens Fans"
and "Manure" used in the same sentence...

With the return of the refs, all bad calls will now be legitimate!
