Baseball Coverage

I hate to say this but WLW is as bad as the Reds are now, when it comes to what passes for talk programming. Like the Reds WLW has become a small market talk station. Especially what passes for on air hosts that are on Extra innings.

This would explain, of course, why WLW has had double digit shares for decades, and leads the #2 station in revenue by about 60%.

On top of that I always hear people say evening ad rates for radio are atrocious.

The ad rates for evening radio are commensurate with audience delivery of the medium and each station.

Radio's evening ratings are much lower than the highest rated dayparts, middays, afternoons and mornings. So rates will be much lower unless a station significantly over-performs the market.

The biggest issue is that, given the lower delivery of radio at night, many agency buys simply cover 6 AM to 7 PM and don't include evenings.

It's been this way since the 70's. Nothing new.

1) WLW has heritage and a 50kw signal which are why they are the default 1 rated station with no competition in the format other than I Heart. And 2) As Mark Twain said. "When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Cincinnati because it's always twenty years behind the times."

Didn't Scott Reinhart take over for Darryl Parks as PD a few years ago? I wonder if He even listens to Extra Innings or 9 to midnight M-F?

Glad to say at least that Chick Ludwig reappeared, after an absence, on Extra Innings last night. It was mentioned by caller how non-baseball types had been hosting (without callers). At show end Chick did say he would cover ESPN 1530 today from 3-6, and then WLW Extra Innings Sat. nite. So that is good for the Pete Rose Cincy HOF weekend coverage. Hopefully an indicator of things to come.

I thought that Garrett Sabelhaus did a good job too when they let him on the air. What ever happened to him? He just disappeared. I don't think that Chick will stay a free agent forever. With his talent and appeal some smart group will sign him. I am kind of surprised that Fox Sports hasn't done it yet.

It amazes me when good talent just goes wanting like this. Thoughts???

One could say, really, there is no "Extra Innings" show anymore due to the state of the Reds. There is no commitment to it as a show. It's just a mixed bag of hosts and when Rocky is on it's half NFL. I think baseball is in trouble in this town.

Sad isn't it. WLW better watch it. WGRR just took the number 1 spot from WLW since 2013. Lazy programming in my opinion is one of the reasons that happened.

WKRQ, WGRR and WUBE have been beating WLW consistently in 25-54.

Looking at 12+ from a summertime book is no indication of any real change in the market.

WGRR is sounding good. I know many former WLW listeners who flipped the dial to 103.5 so is isn't too surprising that they are now #1

WGRR has been doing well for a long time. This is not a surprise. WLW is a victim of a terrible Reds team. They only missed #1 by a tenth of a point. Easily the result of fewer evening listeners.

Amazing how national sports talk shows in the am or afternoon on 1530 or 1360 seem to want to mimic some TV talk show - no subject too inane. ANYWAY - some of the playoff baseball could be interesting to listen to, in the afternoon or night - but of course both these stations were busy tonight running the very same high school football show. No such luck like used to be where you could find these games somewhere on the dial.

That's iHeart Cincinnati for ya. They own all of the viable AM signals and they would rather air High School football on a 50kw signal. I wonder if they are leasing that time out on friday night? As for the game on radio I'm listening to the Cubs and SF game on Sirius/XM. You could always try to tune in to 670AM WSCR has a good signal with their 50kw.

microbob - yeah, I picked up WSCR 670 after Cubs win last night, in time for Maddon's comments. (Great game for Cubs, Chapman worth the investment.) For some reason I never noticed that station before.

It used to be much easier to pick up, in the last few years some Cuban station on the same frequency has been crowding them out. It can vary from night to night which station is more audible here.

Most of the 50kw Chicago have decent night time signals in Cincinnati. 890 WLS is weaker than the used to be also due to interference from Cuba also like 670AM. I sure do miss Chapman but I'm happy for him now that he's on a contending team.
