Baton Rouge

Not much to report from my week in Baton Rouge, time was very tight and the radio reception in my room was the worst I have ever experienced. Only the strongest two local stations were coming in without a lot of electrical interference, so all dx'ing from done from the car I rented and drove from the airport in New Orleans to Baton Rouge, driving within Baton Rouge and in the hotel parking lot.

First for GarFla, 620 WDAE was coming in pretty well on the car radio from the Louis Armstrong Airport in New Orleans about half way to Baton Rouge, then it started breaking up and in Baton Rouge itself, it does come in during the day on a car radio, but not really listenable and with several other competing signals. Of course no WDAE 620 at night.

WFLA 970 was not receivable at all, I did hear something on 970 that may have been WFLA, but it was unidentifiable.

870 from New Orleans came in well in the car at any and every point between the airport and Baton Rouge.
---------------
For Radioman148 all the Chicago blowtorches came in at night, but 670 and 890 had the Cuban interference and some nights WLS was dominent and some nights Cuba was dominant, but with WLS being heard in the background.

In St Petersburg, WLS is often not even detectable under the strong Cuban interference.

780 and 1000 out of Chicago both came in decently with little or no interference.

Thursday evening I excused myself from a banquet, saying I had to go back to my room for a few minutes and I made a beeline to the car to do some dx'ing (time was tight!) before returning to the banquet.

1040 WHO came in most nights but one night the Cuban on 1040 was dominant, what surprised me was WJR 760 out of Detroit, the three nights I tried........... WJR was AWOL; as though they were off the air. Also I was expecting the NYC stations to come in better than they did, WABC wasn't there, and like in Florida WCBS was, but with interference from Cuba, less interference than at home.

Another no show was 740 Zoomer radio out of Toronto, I was surprised that at least on the nights I tried, it was also AWOL, whereas last year in Gatlinburg, it came in loud and clear.

WSM 650 was reliable and strong at night, WSB 750 didn't seem any stronger at night than in St. Petersburg.

1130 out Shreveport came in day and night, but not nearly as strong as I had expected.

1110 was 3 weak barely receivable stations at night, one I'm sure was WBT, another station (Omaha, Ne?) and another Spanish language station.

That's about all I was able to dx, never got past 1200 (San Antonio) on the dial, except I did try the 1620 out of Cuba and it was not coming in anywhere between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

It's interesting to hear how our stations sound from there because I've only heard theirs from here.

And even here at night, other stations can be heard in the background of WDAE.

Thanks for thinking of me.

Interesting. Last night I bagged what I believe is my first Baton Rouge AM from Baldwin Co., Ala. I've gotten tons of B.R. FM on tropo but WJBO 1150 came in long and strong last night after an extended local power outage. Strangely the freq. was a jumble when the power was out but after it came on, WJBO blasted in for a good 10 minutes.

Edit to add: Whilst perusing the Baton Rouge dial just now, I see there's a gospel music station on 1550. As I heard WJBO, I heard un'ID gospel on 1550. Usually we get WLOR from Huntsville, AL during critical hours but it's urban oldies. Could I have heard the tiny 42 watt signal of WPFC from B.R.?

You may very well have heard WPFC, since it was somewhat of a regular when I was in East Texas. Now that I'm in Austin I couldn't say if it's there or not. Local KTXZ 1560, which is just a few miles east of here, prevents hearing much of anything on 1550.

Interesting report... reminds me of my last trip to Louisiana in 1996.

At that time I was only a casual DXer; I'd tune around but wasn't logging my catches. I had taken my Superadio with me on a vacation visiting family friends near Shreveport.

My main memory (aside from hearing so many gospel stations and down home religious shouters on the AM band -- including one program where the guy's so fired up he's breakin' up the mike) was hearing WMAQ, Chicago early each a.m. with semi-local quality, steady signals up until daylight when it finally faded out.

This is back when it was still a news-talk station.

I think I heard several of the big New York City stations, and possibly WSB Atlanta -- but unfortunately I didn't log them down on paper. Now, of course, I wish I did.

I had totally forgotten about 1150 AM, which was the strongest AM signal at the hotel on South Airline Hwy. Anywhere in the room 1150, 1460 and 1550 came in and near the window, 870 out of New Orleans came in; other than that, AM reception in the room wasn't even up to the horrible level!

Baton Rouge Magnet High School owns/runs a Jazz station on 90.3 and I'm normally not a jazz fan, but it was a nice station to listen to for relaxation.

Outside at night, instead of Zoomer 740 out of Toronto, I was receiving what was probably 740 out of Houston, since I heard a lot of Texas references, but was never able to get a positive i.d.
--------------
Totally off topic, but if anyone out there is a WWII history buff, New Orleans has an outstanding and very comprehensive WWII History Museum which covers the 900 and 1000 blocks on Market St......... we only had about 3.5 hours there and I could have easily spent the whole day or maybe even a day and a half there.

Thanks for the tip. I will make it a point to drag my wife to the museum next time down.

If you are ever in the Dayton Ohio area, the National Museum of the USAF on Wright Patterson AFB is a definite must see. From the Wright Brothers to the stealth bomber, it's all there.

As an added bonus, the Roswell alien and parts of its craft have long been purported to be stashed somewhere on Wright Pat.

I am sure you did hear KTRH. It doesn't send the bulk of its power east day or night, but there's a decent lobe that makes it to around Panama City at night. I personally heard it there on vacation back in the summer of 2004. It wasn't the strongest signal (5 on a 1-to-10 scale at best but usually in the 2-3 range for me), but it was there reliably every night.

Icangelp, Thanks for the tip on Wright/Patterson/Dayton; will keep that in mind. If you ever do make it to the WWII museum in N.O.; the must see is the 48 minute film on the 180 degree screen, with startling sound effect and props that make the film 3D, covers both the Eastern and Western front and the homefront. (the museum covers the homefront sas well, with a section of Rosie the Riverter, a section showing all the different types of rationing coupons etc.

For a military reunion, this was a must see; next years reunion is in Canton, Oh, then in 2014 Boston, where the ship - the reunion was based around - went through a major overhaul in the Boston shipyards. We generally have 150 - 250 attendees, so we can get some good group rates on these venues.
---------------------
Back to dx'ing, I'm sure there will be less Cuban interference and more midwest and Canadian stations receivable in both Canton and Boston. (as there was in Albany,NY in 2010)

One other thing, the Cuban 530 that runs the soft music, was receivable day and night in New Orleans; although weak during the day and that same 530 was receivable at night in Baton Rouge.

Just hope I can get a hotel room with less interference from all the electrical devices.

(where Cuban interference is a reality day and night)

Thanks for the heads up on 740; Schmave, I suspected it was Houston, but w/o a positive ID, I just wasn't sure.
