Bay Area News

Just wondering for those in the Bay Area, how would you rank the stations? Which news or sports anchors, meteorologists do you like most? Which ones need to go that you can't stand?

Your thoughts...

With out a doubt Dennis Richmond, no one, a bay area fixture for almost 40 years, Steve Paulson , is a version of Pete Giddings great weather guy, Vicki Liviakis should not waste another day at KRON KTVU needs her on the 10 o 'clock news to replace Leslie, thats a huge loss to KTVU, She was great, The most annoying woman is Darya Folsom on KRON gee whiz act your age,,Kenny in Concord

Personally this is how I would rank the stations:
KGO
KNTV
KTVU
KPIX
KRON

Who I like the most:
News anchor: Ken Bastida (KPIX) Kristin Sze (KGO)
Sports anchor: They are all about the same in quality
Meteorologists: Steve Paulson (KTVU), John Farley, and Shannon O'Donnel (KNTV)

Which ones I can't stand?
Jie Chen (The 10 O'Clock Mandarin News on KTSF).... I think he is a really boring news anchor. He makes you fall asleep watching the news, I wonder why KTSF haven't replaced him with somebody else....

Personal opinion - I think all of the local news broadcasts (except for KRON) are of the same quality these days - none are great, but all are OK. If you go back about 6 years (pre-Young), KRON with Pete Wilson/Pam Moore, and the 10 O'Clock News on KTVU were stand-outs. But KTVU is no better or worse than the others now, and we all know what happened to KRON. The anchors are mostly fine, too - even at KRON. I'm not home to watch Pete Wilson at 6:00, but I assume he's still doing good work. The only male anchor I don't like is Allen Denton on KNTV, who seems like he stepped out of a time machine from the 1970s. All he needs to complete the picture is a bright blue sport coat with the NBC11 logo on it. And something about Jessica Aguirre's "I really care" manner really turns me off ("that's tragic, Dan!").
But perhaps it's sincere on her part, and I'm just being petty...

To LKeller,

That was some good insights from you. I agree with your opinions. Except Jessica Aguirre's lips are so fine!!!! ::)

Thanks for your thoughts.

Thank YOU, 1069. Yes, Jessica's lips are outstanding. I'm always a little reticent to start talking about female anchor's physical attributes, less I be accused of sexism (do women talk about Dan Noyes sexy voice or Allen Denton's hair?), but let's face it - which anchor we find most pleasant to watch for whatever reason is at least part of what makes us watch one news program over another. So at the risk of getting XM Radio started again, I'll say that personally, I'd watch Vicki Liviakis all the time if she was working for a better news operation.

I am in complete agreement. When you mentioned Jessica Aguirre, I quickly responded without thinking about how others may read into it.

I apologize 1069 - I was speaking somewhat tongue-in-cheek. I should start inserting those happy faces in my posts ( :) so people know when I'm joking, I guess. I don't think there's anything wrong with mentioning a female anchor person's physical attributes on a board where people talk about local media and personalities like anchor people. If you remember, about 10 years ago, the mainstream media spent gallons of ink on Leslie Griffith's new hairdo. OK - perhaps it's shallow, but let's face it - anchor people have NOT been hired for their journalistic credentials in about 3 decades. It's their on air manner and delivery (including their appearance, like it or not) that are all aspects of what makes us want to watch them - female or male.

Remember Dave McElhatton? He started at KPIX in the mid 70s and was a big hit because he played against type in an era when most stations hired super-handsome male anchors. They even made a movie about it - Broadcast News starring William Hurt when he was still young and pretty. McElhatton was portly, balding, and jowly. But he was no journalist by background. He was a longtime morning disc-jockey on KCBS radio who became a "journalist" when KCBS went All news in the late 60s. He was hired at KPIX in the mid 70s because people knew him and liked him, and because KPIX knew an "anti-pretty boy" anchor would get people's attention. It worked brilliantly.

So Jessica Aguirre's lips are fair game as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think Gary Radnich should waste another day at KRON. KNTV would be a better station for him to go to!!!!!
He's the best sports reporter in the Bay Area(By far!!!!)

Just wondering does KNTV focus on San Jose still or have they taken to covering San Francisco. It must be hard to cover a market with Three major cities.

I don't think the city of license has much of anything to do with news coverage anymore. None of the local stations skimp on coverage anywhere, as long as it's in their broadcast area. KNTV has a San Francisco bureau, and they cover the rest of the Bay Area just fine. I've noticed that those obligatory live reports at 11:00 come from anywhere in the Bay Area that news is happening, not just the South Bay. They produce a couple of weekend magazine type shows concentrating on high-tech and the Silicon Valley, but those shows are a staple of Bay Area TV these days, along with leisure and travel oriented shows that concentrate on the Wine Country. You could argue that KNTV's news operation has a few faults, but coverage throughout the Bay Area is not one of them.

Personally I watch little local news as possibe because it's cheap an uninformative.

Well, as someone who has never watched KNTV in his life, I wouldn't know Jessica Aguirre if she stood next to me.

But, you guys have piqued my curiousity about her and these illustrious lips of hers. And as someone who has never subscribed to the politically correct mantra bullsh--, if you think Jessica's lips are so appealing, what the blank is wrong with that? Which would the PC crowd rather have, someone who likes someone else's physical appearance, or someone who slams someone else for being ugly? When the hell did the day come when you had to apologize for complimenting a woman on how beautiful you think she is? Where was I that day?

I remember very well when the delicious-looking Kate Kelly first hit the air at KPIX some 25 years ago. You wanna talk about eye candy? SHE was! In fact, I remember Ronn Owens one night in 1983 on KGO commenting on what a "delight to look at" she was. And Vicki Liviakis, as has been noted elsewhere here, is no slouch in the beauty department, either! Leslie Griffith is not bad looking, either.

OK, I had the impression that Jessica was on KNTV -- nope.

Or KGO-TV...

OK, I give up...she's not on either website.

She even in the Bay Area anymore?

"OK, I had the impression that Jessica was on KNTV -- nope. Or KGO-TV...OK, I give up...she's not on either website. She even in the Bay Area anymore?"

Rickontheradio: Perhaps you have ESP you didn't know about. Jessica was on KGO-TV until recently, and disappeared a few weeks (maybe a couple of months ago.

But this notice is on the KNTV website: "Emmy® award-winning Jessica Aguirre will join NBC11 on June 18th as anchor for NBC11 News at 5 p.m"

And nothing is wrong with complimenting her lips, or Kate Kelly or Vick Liviakis either. When I razed 106.9_KIFR for mentioning Jessica's lips, I was just kidding.

Actually, Llew, I wasn't referring to you at all on the beauty of the women we're talking about. I really like your postings...you always have something interesting to say.

I just found out Jessica IS with KNTV now.

And yes, she DOES have nice lips! ;D

I think Vicki Liviakis& Gary Radnich must have long term contracts with the idiots Young Bros.

Wait, how did she went from ABC 7 to NBC 11 in about a week? I thougth their is a non-competitor clause stating no personel can move from one station to another station to be on air within less than 3 months?
