Dream on. Top 40 ain't never comin' back. It's not salable. The closest thing to Top 40 on the air today is the contemporary Latin stations such as KSOL and the hip-hop stations such as KMEL.

d.kaye...if you are so out of touch with what's happening on bay area radio, why do you continue to post here. makes no sense once so ever....KMEL and KSOL in your opinion the closest thing to top 40...wow -- how bout star, kllc, kmvq though they still don't fit they are miles closer than your choices.

I don't know David Kaye what so ever, but he usually makes sense to me. The point is - as much as some of you may want a true Top 40 station here, it's not going to happen because the format is effectively flanked by KMEL, Wild, and...the ones you mentioned - Star, Alice, MOViN, and I'm probably forgetting a couple.
I spent a couple of weeks in LA this summer with my 12 year old daughter, so we spent time in the car listening to the famous 102.7 KIIS-FM. Up here, she likes Wild 94.9. It seemed to me that the play lists of the 2 stations are about 90% the same. Not only that, Wild is a better station, with more energy, and better - live sounding jocks. I'm no expert, but don't most big city "Top 40" stations skew urban these days?
Why would we need yet another "hit" station, when listeners here can here all the hits by flipping between the stations they already have?

Once Immaculate Heart took over AM 1260 the S.F. Market is now fully covered with all of the known religous outlets.
Harry Pappas would sell KTRB except only at a very high price so I expect him to hold onto 860 for many, many years.
It seems like there is less chance for a real oldies station than ever before.
I wounder if a station (in S.F.) would ever change its format based upon a regional trend and not a national trend?

I made the post on Usenet saying I was wondering if I was out of touch simply to give John Higdon a reason to smirk. He likes feeling superior, so I gave him reason to celebrate my leaving ba.broadcast. That's all. My comment that I was losing my interest in radio and that I suddenly didn't feel the passion anymore was true, however. He caused something to click that managed to turn off something in me.
As to my point that KSOL and KMEL are the closest thing to Top 40 radio there is, I think I'm right on the mark with this comment, too. I try not to allow prejudices such as race and language get into an evaluation of what's out there in the radio world. KSOL and KMEL are the most-listened to contemporary music (that is, not oldies or classical) stations in the Bay Area in AQH persons 12+, 6am to midnight. That means they are middle of the road by definition. And top-40 is a middle of the road format (as it was in the KFRC and KYA heydays), thus I have a good argument to award top-40 status to KSOL and KMEL. Once again, top 40 is not rock. It is popular music.

I predict that Adam Carolla is completely dropped from all San Francisco stations.

I agree. 2007 already seen WDVW/New Orleans return to Hot AC and KNRJ/Phoenix being sold to another company while at the same time still has a ? hanging over heads about their future, likewise for Sirius' The Beat if the XM/Sirius merger goes through.
I agree. Well, first, the station has a superb chief engineer. The audio is clean and the signal overall is clean. The move back to the apartment building was genius, too. As for the music format, I put it in the same league as KITS in the 1990s. The DJs are bright and energetic, the music is fresh, and unlike most stations KNGY sounds vital, not rehashed like so many other stations. David, you are WAY too kind, especially if you were referring to me (we have me very part-time and Bill Ruck even more part-time). The audio is as clean as I can make it, even with the old scratchy mixers.
The music director is an active club DJ and remix-producer and really has his finger on the pulse. And Joey V is a production/imaging god.
Fortunately no corporate suit is likely to decide to flip formats on it...
